Music department presents D.M.A. recitals by Vin Shende, Rob Paterson
The Department of Music presents two D.M.A. recitals this week in Barnes Hall. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Vineet "Vin" Shende, who is in his fourth year of the doctoral program in composition, presents his recital Friday, March 31, at 8 p.m. Six works written during his tenure as a graduate student here at Cornell are featured on the program, beginning with his Sonata for solo cello, written for and performed by his friend and colleague, Paul Osterfield. Also on the program is "Talking Wires" for piano, dedicated to and performed by Xak Bjerken. The inspiration for the piece came from a book Shende was reading on the history of the telegraph. He was struck by the similarities between piano playing and telegraph operation. In both cases, a key is depressed, completing a connection to a wire, and, thus, information is dispersed. The rhythmic motives of "Talking Wires," a Native American term for the telegraph, are based on the Morse code of actual telegrams, with melodic material depicting emotional and psychological subtext. Other featured performers include Judith Kellock, singing Shende's "Struwwelpeter-lieder"; a choir of 21 singers performing "Gloria"; and two different instrumental quartets presenting one movement from String Quartet No. 2 and Fantasia on

Story: Two years after Holmes's death Watson places an advertisement in The Times The notebooks tell of an early case. Holmes is asked to analyse the varnish of a violin, for a violinist named Victor Sigerson. He discovers it is a Stradivarius. Later, he hears Sigerson playing and is enchanted. Following Sigerson, Holmes watches him playing snooker, and later beating Lestrade, juggling, and making deductions equal to Holmes's own. Holmes takes a violin lesson with Sigerson, and deduces that the violinist is deliberately concealing his true identity, and is manipulating the situation to satisfy some fascination he has with Holmes. Eventually, after spying on Sigerson in his hotel room he learns that he is really a woman, Violet Sigerson, an orphan, who asks Holmes to investigate her family background. Holmes follows Violet to Edinburgh where she falls ill after performing an escapology act.

Tony Monaco has been playing music since he was eight years old. When he was twelve, He was given a Jimmy Smith album and instantly knew that Jazz Organ was his calling. Tony began to play in Jazz night clubs around Columbus, Ohio while he was still learning the art of the Hammond B3 organ. He was influenced by hometown Organists such as Hank Marr and Don Patterson. Tony's newfound fascination led him to jazz organ legends Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Here He found an unlimited source of inspiration; he just couldn't get enough! On Tony's sixteenth birthday, he received a return phone call from Jimmy Smith. This was a great honor and really boosted his enthusiasm as an organist. Jimmy Smith continued to give Tony Jazz Organ secrets over the phone while Tony was playing around Columbus. When he was twenty, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to come play with him at his club in Woodland Hills L.A., California.
