It's Not "Broke"
By Blake Perry They’ve recorded over 70 CDs, won five Junos, and received multiple other international recording prizes. They draw in 62 000 people each year to their home concerts in Toronto, and the number grows even more when you include their tours in the rest of Canada, the US, Europe, and Asia. It seems that people just can’t get enough of… baroque? Classical (mid-18th to early 19th century) music is far from the mainstream, and baroque (17th to mid-18th century) is just as far, if not further. Many classical groups have had financial problems with large costs and dwindling audiences. Toronto even faced the possibility of losing its symphony back in 2001 when the TSO went through a financial crisis. But despite the fact that baroque isn’t as popular as pop, and symphonies tend to draw a smaller audience than an Eminem concert, Tafelmusik has managed to become a successful baroque orchestra. The musicians of Tafelmusik focus primarily on baroque music, though they play some classical as well. The orchestra started back in 1979 as only a trio, but by 1980 it was already popular enough to offer a ten-concert series of performances at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre in Toronto. Now, in 2005, Tafelmusik has a permanent 17-person core group of 13 strings, two oboes, a bassoon, and a harpsichord. For compositions where other instruments are required, such as Beethoven’s 5th and 6th Symphonies, the orchestra brings in other musicians and expands to a size of up to 44 people.

  • Regional Media and Democracy in Russia
From September 2001 through August 2003 a team of Canadian and Russian scholars will be examining how well the regional media in Russia deliver news about politics and government and the degree to which they meet the expectations of the public. The project focuses upon newspapers and television stations in the Vologda region (in Northern Russia) and will feature a survey of public opinion in that region, content analysis of the media of Vologda, focus groups with journalists there, and a conference in Vologda at which representatives of the local media and regional government will discuss the project's findings with the researchers. Although Vologda region ranks highly among Russian regions in comparative assessments of media freedom, the researchers expect to discover shortcomings. The project aims at producing recommendations for changes in law and practice relating to media in the regions. Supported by a research contract from the University of Calgary/Gorbachev Foundation program (which is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency), the project is based at CREES and directed by Professor Peter Solomon . On the Canadian side the research team includes Dr. Boris Sergeev

Carina Reeves, cello The Kirby String Quartet Founding members of the Markham Street Chamber Concerts, audience favourites on the Toronto Music Garden Concert series, the Les Amis Concerts and in existence for only one year, the Kirby String quartet is rapidly establishing a place for itself among Canada's premier chamber groups. Individually the player's (Julia Wedman and Aisslinn Nosky, violins; Max Mandel, viola; and Carina Reeves, cello) backgrounds include performances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada, Tafelmusik, the Seiler Strings Chamber Orchestra and Opera Atelier, among others. As a quartet they share a conviction of the excitement and wonder to be found in the world of classical music which is evident in their imaginative programming and sometimes risky performances.
