    MUSIC:
Mutter brings 20th century composers, classical tunes to public By Howard Ho Daily Bruin Contributor Twentieth century music lost the mainstream audience as far back as the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." But alas, this music has found its patron in Anne-Sophie Mutter, the Grammy-winning virtuoso violinist. Mutter performed an eclectic mix of the most revolutionary 20th century composers, including Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, at Royce Hall last Thursday. Instead of alienating the audience, she managed to hold them with precise playing and delightful pieces. The night began with Arvo Paert's "Fratres," a haunting piece that is dazzling in its vitality. "Fratres" allowed Mutter an opportunity to display her virtuosity, opening with fast continuous arpeggios that built up until a single piano tone broke through. That moment alone made the concert worthwhile. The ensuing pieces highlighted Mutter's versatility as a performer as well as the strength of her ensemble cast. Stravinsky's "Suite Italienne" required extensive string work while the Shostakovich Trio "No. 2" called for expressiveness. In both, Lambert Orkis, Mutter's perennial accompanist, delighted audiences with a solid backbone of sound that Mutter so gracefully ornated.

"Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' is a unique celebration of life,
    a veritable riot of color"
Anne-Sophie Mutter: Could I start our little discussion by changing places with you and asking you one or two questions - questions from a violinist to a journalist who has heard her play these works by Vivaldi and Tartini live with the Trondheim Soloists?
Harald Wieser: With the greatest of pleasure. But don't expect a critic au fait with the subtleties of spiccato bowing and double-stopping and sporting a silver tie. Ask the man in row 17 who sits there open-mouthed with amazement. Just ask your public.
Anne-Sophie Mutter: Very well then, dear public. Can you still remember my early recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which I made with Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1984?
Harald Wieser: Yes, indeed. There was a photograph of you on the cover sitting on the forest floor with your Stradivarius and with Herr von Karajan standing beside you among the trees, a bright red pullover draped over his shoulder.
Anne-Sophie Mutter: You've answered with your eyes. I'll tell you in a moment why I particularly want listeners to use their eyes in the case of the present recording, but first I'd like to bend your ear, as it were. Do you hear different sounds when you compare the two Vivaldi recordings - the old one and the newer one?

When I first heard this recording of the concerto, at the time of its release, I was not impressed. For some reason, that sinewy, "bloodless" opening did not appeal to me. This added to my general suspicion regarding the Anne-Sophie-Deutsche-Grammophon relationship (the aforementioned slimming process - compare her old albums) - one of the pioneer ones which saw the pretty bombshell always decorating the cover of the CD, hoping to ensnare the (presumably mostly male) classical CD collector. (Notice that pretty musicians á la Mutter, von Otter, Mullova, the young Argerich, Schwarzkopf, etc. and the numerous "Sony Sopranos" always inevitably get a makeover followed by many appearances on the cover of their albums. Ugly candidates are replaced by 19th century paintings. If the musician is male, to appear on the cover, you must either be 1) handsome, 1a) a countertenor, 2) conduct well, 3) have a really expert photographer who understands "angles"; or 4) sophisticated cameras which distort reality - you know, like how Winword is not WYSIWYG.)

[53:35] full-price by Derek Lim How could I have been so blind?  For so long I have taken Mutter's recordings at face value - her old recordings with Karajan I found lacking in total maturity.  Yet here is a recording which will definitely convert even the hardest anti-Mutterians.  A comparison with the recent Vengerov recording which I reviewed here shows up the latter's inexperience.  Not that Vengerov, though only in his mid-twenties, is lacking in maturity musically.  What I find is an emotional lack of experience, in life itself.  Passages which Vengerov makes much of, Mutter makes even more.  A casual listen will tell the attentive listener that this is no ordinary performance.  I had never liked Mutter's rather thin kind of sound, the likes of which besmirched her recordings of Beethoven's and Brahms's concerti with Karajan (perhaps because she was not using a full-size violin? But I doubt), but in the years between those recordings and now, her tone is now full-blooded indeed, and she is totally technically and emotionally ready to tackle this, the most Romantic of concertos.  Her playing is in turns vulnerable, pleading, consoling, defiant, determined, denying, loving........words fail me, really, when trying to describe a performance of such blinding intensity (and I hardly use the word blinding). She takes more different interpretational decisions than most artists, and even more than Fritz Kreisler himself (whose reading I adore) brings out the character of Brahms's own sensitive self beneath the veneer of respectable gruffness, portamento-ing all over the place, sliding up to notes, with a vibrato that ranges from wide and fast to hardly any, expressionless and resigned in the most "correct" places I have ever heard.  I had tears in my eyes more than once.

Anne-Sophie Mutter, born in Rheinfelden in southern Germany, has since her debut with Herbert von Karajan in the 1977 Salzburg festival, become one of the most sought after and admired violinists.
Ms. Mutter started playing the violin at the age of 5, and have since been associated with tutors such as Erna Honigberger and Aida Stucki, a pupil of Carl Flesch. She soon enjoyed considerable success in several competitions, and notably the Lucern Festival in 1976. This drew the attention of Maestro Karajan and she auditioned for him in Berlin shortly after, at the age of 13.
Since her highly acclaimed Berlin debut with Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1978, her live performances as well as her recordings have attracted quite some attention and praise. After some years of focusing mainly on the canonized works of the german central repertoire; from the concertos of Bach through Mozart and Beethoven, to the concertos of the great romantics, Anne-Sophie Mutter has increasingly turned her attention to contemporary music, ranging from Strawinsky, Berg and Bartók to more recent composers such as Witold Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Norbert Moret and Wolfgang Rihm.
Anne-Sophie Mutter is currently working with Beethoven's violinsonatas (with Lambert Orkis), and will perform them around the world in the coming year. From these performances, a set of recordings is sceduled to be released.

Although he is best known as a pianist, the young Mozart was also a violinist but not an enthusiastic one. His father often admonished him for not practising his violin more. Later, the composer played viola to Haydn's first violin in private run-throughs of the quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn. Mozart wrote his only violin concertos in 1775 when he was just 19.

This video is 57 minutes of pure Bach joy from beginning to end. Karajan conducts and plays from the second harpsichord that is facing the orchestra and chorus. (Yes, there are two harpsichords in the center of the orchestra!) Karajan has not recorded very much Bach, but you wouldn't know it from this performance. This artistically magnificent live concert is a total success. It's a rare, top-notch live Bach concert from Karajan and company that is worth the purchase. All the musicians are superb. Karajan uses no baton and is very refrained. Liner notes are true: "with calm attentiveness...he allows the musicians to lead the way, visibly admiring their performances". It's a superb, non-HIP modern performance that has real moments of power, spirit and grace. Anne-Sophie Mutter has become a world-class recording artist and violinist. Here she is in one of her earlier performances, and she plays just as beautifully and intelligently then, as she does now. Her performance of Concerto No. 2 is everything I could ask. A bright, energetic, beautiful performance. Wonderful deep tones from the violin.
