"No admirer of Nathan Milstein will be able to resist this collection, which contains some of his finest playing in surprisingly clear and revelatory recorded sound. Essential listening, this set is generally recommended, as a recording of extraordinary merit."
Fanfare : Sept/Oct 1997: Robert Maxham Violinist Henry Roth is of the opinion that Nathan Milstein was even more dazzling in live performance than he was in his recordings. The many live performances currently being released are proof that, like Heifetz and Perlman, Milstein could catch fire in front of an audience, although his fire burned with a different, more controlled kind of intensity than theirs. Henry Roth writes in his liner notes: "The Milstein public performance repertoire was neither as broad in scope nor as large in size as that of Heifetz, David Oistrakh, Menuhin, Stern, Szeryng, or Ricci...He insisted upon playing only those works for which he had affinity and affection, and was decidedly not a pioneer of new music. However, the continued repetition of his chosen repertory never resulted in a loss of freshness or inspiration, as he invariably sought and found new musical insights in those works, constantly modifying fingerings and bowings to suit his changing ideas."
This collection, spanning nearly three decades of public performances, provides a representative sampling from the Milstein canon, captured in the best possible sound.

The Mendelssohn with Bruno Walter has a real sense of discovered freshness to it and ardent lyricism as well. The sense of freedom is one aspect of Milstein and Walter’s translucent musicality here, as is the soloist’s bewitching cantilena. He is unaffected and memorable in the Andante and deeply noble and with his conductor’s bracing support brings crisp elegance to the finale; not too fast either.

The New York Times

The Times, London
"An accomplished virtuoso and a musician of unfailing taste."

"The sumptuously virtuoso performance naturally demanded several encores. A dazzling experience."
Aftenposten, Oslo
"Extremely talented violinist who possesses wonderful temperament and unfailing musical sense." Nathan Milstein
Ragin (RAH-gheen) Wenk-Wolff enjoys an extraordinary career. She began playing the violin at age 11, and started studies with her first professional teacher at age 13. Only one year later, at the age of 14, she performed Mozart's G Major Violin Concerto with her own cadenzas, and since then she has regularly been a soloist with all the Norwegian symphony orchestras, including the Oslo Philharmonic, the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, and the Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra. She received much acclaim for her performance with orchestra of the Vieuxtemps "Ballade & Polonaise" which was broadcast on Norwegian Television and BBC Radio 3 in England. Her remarkable playing and mature and moving interpretation of works such as Mozart's haunting Sinfonia Concertante instantly brought her to the forefront among Norwegian artists. At 17, she made her official debut in Oslo, which caused a sensation, and for which she won the Norwegian Debut Prize. In October 1984 she had her very successful London debut at the Purcell Room (South Bank) and the same month gave a recital in Paris in conjunction with an exhibition of her own drawings.

But over what might have been as many as five or six years, Nathan Milstein did indeed paint murals on the walls surrounding my electric trains. On every trip to Chicago he descended to the basement, where his paints were stored. He removed his jacket, rolled up the sleeves of those splendid English-tailored shirts, and painted mountains replete with pine trees, ravines dotted with small wildflowers of red and yellow and orange, and even, way in the distance, small trains carrying their magical freight to villages beyond the mountains.

Editor's Review Artist's Description
This 19-year-old violinist surprises listeners with his confident playing. Nate Robinson delves into some difficult works of Gershwin and Niccolo Paganini with a loose, playful approach that breathes new life into them. Nate Robinson has appeared as soloist thoughout the world since the age of 10, he made his solo debut with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra playing the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 at the age of 11 and subsequently performed again with the orchestra two years later. He has since performed throughout the United States; at Lincoln Center in New York City, has appeared with orchestras in New York, Texas, Oregon, and Los Angeles performing the works of Glazunov, Wieniawski, Beethoven, Sarasate, and Spohr among others. Nate Robinson has also performed in Canada, Germany, Holland, and Asia. In addition he has appeared in performance with the renowned pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy and in chamber music performances with members of the San Francisco Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra. Nate Robinson's performances have been televised on the Bravo! and CBC networks in Canada, and NPR (National Public Radio).
