Several groups of the 60s and 70s appeared occasionally with symphony orchestras, and this had been a dream of the long running Yes for some time. It finally happened in 2002 and this is both the video and audio record of it. Because of time constraints the DVD has 14 tracks and the CD only 10, leaving out the terrific two solos by guitarist Steve Howe, and also the title tune from their Magnification album. But it enables one to hear the music in your car, computer, or on your portable player. This is trend happening with more and more DVDs lately and very sensible it is. It may have to be done with more DVD-Audios if that format wants to meet the competition of the hybrid SACDs.

Nathan Milstein
by Loke Hoe-Yeong
Nathan Milstein (1903 - 1992) was called the "prince of the violin" (and at one time, the "prince of the bow"). Harold Schonberg, in his obituary of Milstein published in The New York Times , wrote his famous line, "He could well have been the most nearly perfect violinist of his time". However, the name Milstein is rarely mentioned or known among the music-listening public. Which is a sad thing considering the esteem and admiration professional violinists and musicians alike then and now hold for him. But this problem can be easily explained; Milstein was a not "commercial" musician who could "sell". Rather, he was repelled by the demands of celebrity and never indulged much in publicity. The little-known fact is that Milstein's career is the longest ever in the history of violin playing - 72 years, from his official debut playing the Glazunov concerto with the composer conducting(!) in 1915, to his final concert in 1987 playing the Beethoven concerto with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. Some time after his final concert, the violinist broke his arm, bring his career to an abrupt halt. A pity, considering that the healthy musician's career could have been ever longer!

While not having the time and energy to do research of my own, I can only excerpt what others have written about Mr. Milstein. Until I have more materials, the follows will have to suffice.
Beginning of excerpt by David Foil
On November 5, 1979, in the pleasant autumn of his long and miraculous career, Nathan Milstein played a recital at Carnegie Hall as he had done for dozens of New York Seasons. This particular evening was like many others in Milstein's experience. Someone who was present called it a "a fiddlers' convention."
"Everybody seemed to be there," the critic Harold C. Schonberg noted in his review in The New York Times , "from Joseph Fuchs and Itzhak Perlman down to every orchestra violinist in town who had a free night, and every young violinist out of Juilliard, Curtis, or wherever."
They were there, of course, to savor Milstein's still glowing and amazingly vital artistry. They were also there to pay homage. For the twilight of Milstein's career, however sublime, was inevitably the twilight of the golden age: here, it seemed, was the last magnificent exponent of the "Russian" school of violin playing that reached its zenith in the virtuosos who emerged, just after the turn of the 20th century, from the St. Petersburg studio of the violinist and teacher Leopold Auer. By 1979, Milstein was the only one of them still performing. Jascha Heifetz had retired, with typical aplomb, into an imperial silence. Mischa Elman, Toscha Seidel, and Efrem Zimbalist were dead. A dozen other extraordinary but lesser known Auer pupils had become quaint memories. Milstein alone remained and, on that night in 1979, he could still make transcendent drama of the

HH
GP
: Are there any particular 20th-century violinists who have influenced you or whose playing you greatly admire?
HH : I was surely most influenced by my two teachers Klara Berkovich in Baltimore, from age five to ten, and Jascha Brodsky in Philadelphia, from age ten to 17. Both were very demanding teachers, but very kind, superb violinists: musicians of style and taste who allowed no technical shortcuts. I was extremely lucky to grow up under their guidance.
GP : Is there anyone who should have been included in the film who wasn't?
HH
GP
: How should the archival material featured in the film be viewed, and what is its value to young artists?
HH : It gives young players and old ones, for that matter an opportunity to see that they are part of a long and very rich tradition of violinists, each of whom played differently, each of whom played effectively. And for those who are studious, it is a great resource for studying the technique of playing the violin. Nearly every school, every body type, every possible manner of holding the violin and bow is represented.
