Return Engagement Violinist plays with Las Vegas Philharmonic for fourth time By KEN WHITE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic will perform works by composers Felix Mendelssohn, Paul Hindemith and Johannes Brahms on Saturday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Guest violinist Stefan Milenkovich makes his fourth appearance with the Philharmonic. REVIEW-JOURNAL FILE PHOTO The Las Vegas Philharmonic brings back one of the most acclaimed young violinists Saturday for its "From the Heart of Europe" concert in Artemus Ham Hall on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Stefan Milenkovich puts in his fourth appearance with members of the orchestra he previously performed at two soirees and one concert with his wife, cellist Ani Aznavoorian. Both in their mid-20s, Milenkovich and Aznavoorian will perform Johannes Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor, a piece that Philharmonic conductor Hal Weller says is "throughout a close-knit duo and so musical. The second movement is one of the most moving in the repertoire. It demands huge technique." Weller says Milenkovich is "a great violinist. He's one of the most substantial violinists in the country."

Acclaimed violinist Stefan Milenkovich closes Las Vegas Philharmonic's season
By KEN WHITE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Violinist Stefan Milenkovich returns to Las Vegas as the featured soloist for the Las Vegas Philharmonic's season finale Saturday night in Artemus Ham Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Milenkovich is no stranger to the Philharmonic. He has performed at two of the orchestra's soirees. "He just knocked everybody out," said Harold Weller, music director of the Philharmonic. "Instant standing ovation." Weller first heard of Milenkovich through friends in Flagstaff, Ariz., where Weller had been conductor. "They said, `You have to hire this kid for something.' He impressed us so much at the first soiree that we invited him back last year." Milenkovich will perform Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's romantic Violin Concerto "It's a real tour de force," Weller said at Saturday's concert. Milenkovich gained recognition by winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1997. He also received the silver medal at the 1994 Indianapolis Violin Competition when he was 17.

CAMPBELL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC Except for Brahms, the Seattle Chamber Music Festival concentrated on the early 20th century Friday night at Lakeside School. And what good and interesting works they were, and superbly performed. MUSIC REVIEW SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL WHEN: Through Friday night WHERE: Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave. N.E. TICKETS: $29-$38, with student discounts; 206-283-8808 or www.seattlechambermusic.org. The evening, yet again with a capacity audience, began with the rarely heard Shostakovich Piano Trio in C Minor, marking its festival premiere. It is an early piece of the Russian composer, written when he was a piano and composition student at the Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) Conservatory. That he was precocious is obvious in every measure. His First Symphony, written as a graduation work and acclaimed at its premiere in 1926, follows by only three years. It would not be easy to discern that Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the piano trio, for none of his characteristic traits developed later in his career was in evidence at the time: no edge, no acidity, no bittersweet moments, no anguish, no satire. Instead, it flows easily in the fluent style of the Romantic era.

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Chamber fest unfazed by changes By R.M. CAMPBELL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC There has been a lot "jiggling" at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival this past week, as artistic director Toby Saks put it in a precurtain speech Monday night at Lakeside School. MUSIC REVIEW SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL WHEN: Through July 29 WHERE: Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave. N.E. TICKETS: $29-$38, with student discounts; 206-283-8808 or www.seattlechambermusic.org Cellist Robert deMaine, who was scheduled to play a series of concerts, had to leave early last week because of the death of his mother, leaving a big void of engagements. Then, violinist Stefan Milenkovich took ill, although he is expected to return. And so, of the three works scheduled for Monday's concert, only one remained as printed in the program. In the Mozart G Minor Piano Quartet (K. 478), Adrian Brendel stepped in for deMaine. The Debussy Piano Trio in G, with Milenkovich as the violinist, was scrapped altogether, replaced by Brahms' Clarinet Trio in A Minor.

THE LAS VEGAS PHILHARMONIC
LAS VEGAS PHILHARMONIC ILLUMINATES CITY’S CULTURAL SCENE
Soaring high above the din of slot machines is a new sound in Las Vegas, a full-fledged symphony orchestra that’s played Beethoven and Mahler to sold out houses. The Las Vegas Philharmonic burst onto the Las Vegas music scene on Fourth of July, 1998, launching classical musical fireworks that have brightened, and broadened, the city’s entertainment horizons and added a new cultural dimension to the city’s image.
The orchestra is the result of determined efforts of a group of civic leaders who not only are devoted to classical music but also believe that Southern Nevada both needs and will support a resident professional symphony orchestra.
They are right.
