Belgrade-born violinist Stefan Milenkovich, good pal of political bigwigs, makes his Young Concert Artists debut at the Y. Search the halls of Juilliard, and chances are you'll find only one student who can count the Pope, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev among his fans. Stefan Milenkovicha 21-year-old violinist from the former Yugoslaviaserenaded Reagan at the White House, is a personal friend of Gorbachev and will meet the Pope for the third time next month. Before lunching at the Vatican, however, Milenkovich has local business to attend. A winner of the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Belgrade-born virtuoso makes his New York debut at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday 14. "Coming from a place like Belgrade, I find that people think of the worst things," Milenkovich says. "I want to prove that something nice can come from that part of the worldnot just war and crisis." Milenkovich began playing the violin when he was three years old; until this year, he studied in his hometown under his father's tutelage. By the time he was 18, he had played over a thousand concerts worldwide, won several international competitions, recorded two CDs and earned a music degree from the University of Belgrade. He's currently enrolled in Juilliard's exclusive Professional Studies program as a student of violin doyenne Dorothy DeLay, instructor to the starsincluding Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham and Sarah Chang.

Award-winning violinist to perform at McCain Published on Friday, February 8, 2002 Cassidy Hill Kansas State Collegian
At an age when he could barely speak, Stefan Milenkovich began his musical career. Violin Man Stefan Milenkovich will perform at 8 tonight at McCain Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for students, $12 for general public, are are available at McCain box office. In 1980, 3-year-old Milenkovich had already attempted to play the piano, which was his mother's talent. After realizing the piano was not for him, Milenkovich then picked his father's best talent, the violin. Years have passed, and the multi award-winner Milenkovich will play at 8 tonight in McCain Auditorium. Pianist Rohan De Silva will accompany Milenkovich in a recital like performance. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Milenkovich said he expected to be an accomplished musician from an early age. "Since both of my parents were and still are musicians, my father being a violinist and my mother being a pianist, it was logical to assume I would like music," Milenkovich said. Milenkovich said he began to perform in public schools when he was 3 years old, but his skills were still developing.

REVIEWS:
Reviews "The 24-year-old Belgrade-born violinist Stefan Milenkovich has remarkable control over his instrument and is blessed with superb intonation and what seems like a limitless capacity for sustaining a big, broad, smooth line."
The Los Angeles Times
"Violinist Stefan Milenkovich's recital at the Kennedy Center was so disarmingly magical that it is not easy to describe it's glories. At 22, Milenkovich is clearly at the treshold of a major career. This is not so
much a matter of a dazzling virtuosity (though he has it all) as of searching musicianship."

KENJI BUNCH, composer "Kenji Bunch has had several arresting works performed in recent seasons. He is a composer to watch, and his new position as Young Concert Artists' Composer-in-Residence is likely to expand his presence. Mr. Bunch is also a violist, and his five movement Suite for Viola and Piano, composed for violist Naoko Shimizu, tests a player's limits. The dramatic writing of the opening Rhapsody gives way to a pizzicato section full of character and melody. A graceful Lament that explores a broad timbral palette becomes an extended Cadenza, which in turn expands into a vigorous, virtuosic perpetual-motion finale."
