    Midori Astonishes Cincinnati...Again - 2000

Cincinnati welcomes Midori for a series of concerts this weekend with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Jesús López-Cobos conducting. This is not the first time our audiences will be able to enjoy her charm and virtuosity.
In February 1999, Midori stopped briefly in Cincinnati for a chamber music concert. Her last appearance with the CSO was in 1997 when she played the First Violin Concerto by Shostakovich.
In Beethoven's Violin Concerto, which is in the program of this weekend's concerts, Midori plays the first movement with gentleness and unfulfilled yearning. Her interpretation is so touching that one has to pause and contemplate the magnitude of the moment. The sound is rich and full. The spirit of the music seems to shelter us from the worries of everyday life. This music composed almost two centuries ago and played on an instrument of equal age communicates incredible relevance and tearful emotion. We, mortal vessels, are faced with the work universal and timeless. And such is the reflection on Midori's performance.
In the opening measures of the last movement, she reaches beauty and confidence. The sound builds up in strength, jumping between light and darkness, peace and sparks of turbulence or almost fury.

It was painful to do because I would have liked to have kept it in the family, but I wasn't happy with it. I don't like Strads for the simple reason that they always have a "Strad" sound. Felix Mendelssohn and Max Bruch, Mendelssohn and Bruch Violin Concertos [Midori, violin; Berlin Philharmonic, Mariss Jansons, cond.] (Sony Classical, SK-87740) The two works recorded here represent two of the greatest war-horses of the violinist's repertoire. The Mendelssohn Concerto in E-Minor for Violin and Orchestra, written in 1844, is by turns haunting, elegiac, magical and spritely; it has never been out of the standard repertoire and is often paired, as it is here, with the Concerto in G-minor for Violin and Orchestra by Max Bruch. Bruch's concerto, written in 1865, is by far that composer's most popular work in fact, it is almost the only work of Bruch's still performed regularly. It is a warm and lush work, reminiscent of Brahms and Mendelssohn in its conservative form. The great nineteenth century violinist Joseph Joachim considered these two works to be two of the four great German violin concertos, along with Beethoven's and Brahms's. The Bruch concerto also soars, with the orchestra giving a wonderful performance that glows and delights. Like the Mendelssohn, the Bruch concerto is amazing in the way it casts soloist-as-partner; and as in the earlier work on this disc, Midori shows her ability to fill the role of partner just as well as she displays her awesome command of her instrument. These recordings were made live at the Philharmonie in Berlin, and they do indeed have the "urgent" feel of live performances. The liner notes are decent, directly quoting the composers to depict their attitudes toward composition. This is a fine, fine disc.

Midori as daring as she is flawless
By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic Published April 18, 2005 CLEARWATER - With Midori the flawless technique is a given. What comes as a pleasant surprise is how daring an interpreter of the classics she is. Midori the interpreter was on display right from the start of the violinist's recital Saturday night at Ruth Eckerd Hall, as she and pianist Robert McDonald gave an exceedingly slow treatment to the opening phrase in the Largo of Mozart's Sonata in B flat major. The dramatic sense of that deliberate approach became clear as the pair worked their way into the lively

Beethoven, Mozart, Elgar ; Midori (violin) London Symphony Orchestra, Zubin Mehta, Barbican Centre, 27 th April, 2003 (AR)
An accomplished performance of Beethoven’s Leonore No. 3 Overture opened Zubin Mehta’s LSO concert. Securing polished playing from the London Symphony Orchestra, notably some quite outstanding woodwind playing, the performance was given added edge with the incisive interplay between violins and ‘cellos and the off stage trumpet call. However, what was lacking was a sense of urgency and tension in the final passages, with the horns too toned down and the final timpani roll lacking proper weight and attack. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.3 in G Major K 218 was given sensitive and refined support from Mehta and a reduced LSO – but what let the performance down was the florid playing of Midori. Her playing of the Allegro was brittle, harsh and heavy making the music sound too often as if it had come from the 19
