"It's an interesting kind of layered approach to this piece. It's my own version of bluegrass, which goes into the motifs of the piece. Then it's my own version of classical composition."

Saturday, November 16, 2002 Meyers dazzles in CSO debut Violinist plays a profound Prokofiev
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers made her Cincinnati debut 13 years ago in a recital for Matinee Musicale. It took far too long to bring back this dazzling artist, but on Thursday, she made an impressive debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Music Hall. Her vehicle was Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that is as dreamlike and Impressionistic as Prokofiev's Second Concerto is full-blooded. What she brought to it was vivid imagination, infusing the concerto's meandering themes with personality and stunning finesse. Paavo Jarvi's program, which included ballet suites by Prokofiev and Ravel, was all about subtlety and orchestral color. No doubt some of the kinks in Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 3, which opened the program, will be ironed out by the time the CSO records it next week for Telarc. But the concluding Suite No. 2 from Ravel's Daphnis et C hloe (also to be recorded was a gorgeous display of orchestral musicianship that had the audience on its feet at the conclusion.

It was painful to do because I would have liked to have kept it in the family, but I wasn't happy with it. I don't like Strads for the simple reason that they always have a "Strad" sound. I’m afraid this is simply not a thought-through performance – it’s architecturally careless, directionless, without tension, and one seemingly incapable of perceiving the idiom. If anything, perplexingly, the Ravel suffers from chronic under-inflexion. Parts of the performance are attractive but the underpowered first movement leads to a lack of phrasal continuity and inevitability and, indeed, incident. There’s also a one-dimensionality about Meyers’ tone that limits engagement. The Blues second movement is essentially delicate and the finale more whimsical than relentless. It’s a point of view, I suppose, but it sounds superficial and very dampened down to me.

His 2004–05 performances included appearances as soloist with the BBC and Fort Worth symphonies, the Copenhagen, China, Los Angeles, and Buffalo philharmonics, Orchestre symphonique de Montr©al, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and a U.S. tour with the Moscow Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Simonov. Summer of 2005 marks Cho-Liang Lin’s fifth year as artistic director of La Jolla SummerFest. Of his directorship, the Los Angeles Times notes that Mr. Lin “has put together another bracing and provocative series.” His advocacy of contemporary composers has resulted in commissions and premieres from composers such as Chen Yi, Gordon Chin, Joel Hoffman, Mark O’Connor, Christopher Rouse, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Lalo Schifrin, Bright Sheng, Tan Dun, George Tsontakis, and George Walker. In 1997 he founded the Taipei International Music Festival, the largest classical music festival in the history of his native country, drawing an outdoor audience numbering over 30,000.
