Cropper Honored by Songwriters Hall of Fame
However, Cropper said that record executives originally did not think his hits were good enough to be released. "’Knock on Wood’ literally got thrown off the session because they didn't think it was good enough, and they though it sounded too much like ‘Midnight Hour,’” he explained. "It sat on the shelf like that for months."
Another Stax session man, Isaac Hayes, was honored, as were fellow soul stars Bill Withers and Smokey Robinson, who won the Johnny Mercer Award for a musician already inducted into the Hall of Fame. Also honored were Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty and the songwriting team of Richard and Robert Sherman, who composed music for film Mary Poppins, among many others.
Given a lifetime achievement award was guitarist and inventor Les Paul, still gigging age 90. Paul is often credited with inventing the solid body electric guitar, and his technical prowess combined with his songwriting skills when he pioneered the technique of over-dubbing on multi-track tape recording equipment that revolutionized sound recording. The Les Paul Trio, which included his talented wife Mary Ford, produced such hits as "Tennessee Waltz," "Mockin' Bird Hill," "How High The Moon," and "Vaya Con Dios."
Bach Aria Discovered in Germany
A previously unknown aria by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach has been discovered in the eastern town of Weimar. The handwritten music represents one of the few surviving pieces from Bach's early period, said Peter Wollny, research director at the Bach Archive Foundation in Leipzig.

His paternal grandfather was a drummer and maternal grandmother was a symphony violinist. He developed an interest in classical music at an early age. Carl's father was an entertainer, who sang, danced , played the guitar and drums. His mother could play various instruments, as well, and Palmer's older brother, who, played guitar. (In 1958, another brother named Steve, would also later play - the drums). Naturally, Carl took an interest in playing music. He first started playing the violin, his first instrument, ("..... to keep up the family tradition", he now jokes...). When he turned 11, he took a liking to the drums, after seeing Sal Mineo play them in the film "Drum Crazy".

Based on the best-selling novels of Patrick O'Brian, the film stars Russell Crowe as "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, who pits his crew of the H.M.S. Surprise against a much better armed and ruthless privateer, in a chase that takes him all the way to the far side of the world. Rising newcomer Paul Bettany ("A Beautiful Mind") plays the ship's surgeon Dr. Stephen Maturin.

“I surrounded myself with artifacts of the period as I worked on the script – swords, belt-buckles, maps, hoping to draw down the muse,” Weir continues. “Music was another aid, as I groped in the dark, trying to find my way back in time.”
CASTING
Says Crowe: “We developed a kind of creative shorthand in A Beautiful Mind that I thought would serve us well in establishing quickly and effectively the Jack-Stephen dynamic. I was so glad that Peter made the decision to cast Paul. There are rhythms and things that we just understand of each other. With another person, you might actually have had to break down a scene and explain it.
