Dobbin's Den REMEMBERING BILLY GRAHAM June 20, 2003 "It was like riding a fire engine around a corner at 90 miles an houryou're just hanging on by the tips of your fingers". That was how drummer Billy Graham described playing with Charlie Parker to writer Mark Miller. That meeting occurred 50 years ago, on Saturday afternoon, February 7, 1953 at the Chez Paree on Stanley Street here in Montreal. At that Jazz Workshop concert, Graham joined Americans, guitarist Dick Garcia and pianist Valdo Williams (who was living here and playing at Rockhead's) and Hal Gaylor, a local bassist, who went on to the US to play with the likes of Paul Bley, Chico Hamilton, Tony Bennett and in trio co-op with Billy Bean and Walter Norris. On the fifth set of the afternoon they backed Charlie Parker on "Ornithology" and "Cool Blues" and stayed on for a rendition of "I'll Remember April" after "Bird" left the stage. (Material that can be heard on the Uptown label CD release, "Charlie Parker, Montreal, 1953".) Actually Graham and Gaylor with Gordie Fleming, Yvan Landry and Al Baculis, played six tunes on the first set of that concert as the Canadian All Stars. For a man of his large talent, Billy Graham left relatively few recordings, the Parker and Canadian All Star items already mentioned and CBC transcriptions with Fleming, Lacombe and Armas (Art) Maiste and (in the early 60s) three NFB soundtracks, "Of Sport and Men", "Runner" and "Ski" done with musicians like Baculis, Freddie Nichols, Jackson Rider, John Lanza, Maiste, Don Douglas, Herbie Spanier, Jack Shtyka, Nick Ayoub and Gerry Danovitchperhaps more material will emerge in time to be included on a 2CD retrospective of Gordie Fleming's careerone being compiled by Gordie's daughter Heidi and scheduled for release on Justin Time in 2004.

The CD includes Baldwin’s composition “Concerto for Al’s Breakfast,” for trumpet and brass quintet with Baldwin as soloist. The title work, “Old American Songs, Volume III,” is an arrangement containing 18 songs, including ‘Buffalo Gals,’ ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ ‘Anchors Away’ and ‘Hello Ma Baby.’ (Old American Songs, Volume I and II can be heard on a previous CD titled American as Apple Pie.) The Summit Hill Brass Quintet played its first concert in February 1977 and the present five members have been playing together since 1982. William Banfield (composition) is the author of a new book, Black Notes: Essays of a Musician Writing in a Post-Album Age (Scarecrow Press, November 2004). Walter Donaldson (1893-1947) was one of the most prolific American popular song writers of the twentieth century. He wrote more than 600 songs in his 30-year career. He composed most of his best during the years between the two World Wars, when he collaborated with many of the best known lyricists of his day (among them Gus Kahn, Edgar Leslie, Bud de Sylva, and Johnny Mercer), but he also wrote many of his own lyrics, such as At Sundown, Little White Lies
