Django Reinhardt Biography
Django Reinhardt
Artist: Django Reinhardt
Formed:
Members: Hot Club of France Quintet Quintet of the Hot Club of France Styles: Jazz Continental Jazz Swing Dixieland ... Gypsy
A violinist first and a guitarist later, Jean Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt grew up in a gypsy camp near Paris where he absorbed the gypsy strain into his music. A disastrous caravan fire in 1928 badly burned his left hand, depriving him of the use of the fourth and fifth fingers, but the resourceful Reinhardt figured out a novel fingering system to get around the problem that probably accounts for some of the originality of his style. According to one story, during his recovery period, Reinhardt was introduced to American jazz when he found a 78 RPM disc of Louis Armstrong's "Dallas Blues" at an Orleans flea market. He then resumed his career playing in Parisian cafes until one day in 1934 when Hot Club chief Pierre Nourry proposed the idea of an all-string band to Reinhardt and Grappelli. Thus was born the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, which quickly became an international draw thanks to a long, splendid series of Ultraphone, Decca and HMV recordings.

Chicago, IL. Congress Theatre
Friday, September 29th
~reviewed by Rev. A. Strangerz 23.3 "One you lock the target, two you bait the line, three you slowly spread the net, and four..." I am caught. Front 242 playing at Chicago's Congress Theatre! The venue last famous for having the plaster falling off the nicely designed ceilings during the Chemical Brothers Show in 1998. I go with some friends of mine, Sam and Tish, a very travel worthy couple who are as happy to get out of the local scene for a night as me! It was a breeze, we managed to get the pre-sale price at the door, do to some problems we had with ticket-bastards. It only saved us $15, but that Is enough o splurge on dinner. There is just the right amount of chill in the air, and the excitement is building. I have been in the wrong place/wrong time for about a decade making it impossible to catch the Belgian bringers of industrial dance-hall death. As a promoter/DJ sure I am burned out on the classics (except "Don't Crash" ) , but this is live! Oh the expectations. With dinner done, and a good ride on the CTA, we head over to the Congress, and It Is a breeze, take reflective ticket out of pocket, hand It to the girl, rip. We are In. No line? Yet lots of people, the show Is set up rave style, and the lobby area of this massive building Is hosting It's own dance party. The line to get a beer, shows us how long the outside line once was.

Theme Song: "Serenade in Blue"
In 1938 Glenn Miller asked Jimmy Dorsey for advice in forming a big band. Dorsey noted that one of the key elements was a solid singer, such as his top male vocalist, Bob Eberly. Miller asked if Dorsey knew of any singers that might want to take a job with his up coming band. Joining the discussion, Bob recommended his younger brother, Ray
[ Sidenote from Stephen Eberle: ]

"Brothers Ray and Bob Eberle were born with the name Eberle; ending with an 'e'. Bob changed his name early on in his career. He was opening for a Milton Berle show and the announcer kept pronouncing his name wrongly. Rather than having to correct people all the time, Bob changed his name to Eberly to avoid further confusion. Ray Eberle kept his given birthname throughout his lifetime." Ray had no formal training in music, nor any professional experience, however Miller hired him. In hopes of stepping out of his brother shadow, Ray changed the spelling of his last name to Eberle. Miller helped coach Ray and featured him on many of the band's Chesterfield cigarette's radio broadcasts. His handsome looks and dedication to the Miller songbook became a perfect fit with the bands style. His songs sold millions, including "At Last" and "Moonlight Cocktails."

This Austrian-born violinist and bandleader studied both in Berlin and Vienna. At just age 17, Weber was already showing his talent as a leader when conducting a Berlin hotel orchestra, and developing skills that he would later utilize in leading large orchestras specializing in Viennese Waltz music. After emigrating to the United States, Weber had a successful career in Radio and Recordings. During 1938-'39, he was the conductor for the 'Contented Hour' radio show (sponsored by Carnation Brand Condensed Milk), and continued to be musically active well into the 1940s. Interestingly, during his lifetime, Marek donated his violins to the Indiana University School of Music, where they were used by needy students. Later, in her will, his widow Mrs. Anna Weber established an endowment for the university that continued her husband's philanthropy and his love of music. Honoring the memory of her husband, The Anna Weber Endowment Fund provides two violin scholarships, at the IU School of Music, to be given annually to a male and a female student who demonstrate financial need. INTERVIEW: The Changelings
by Jett Black
In everything that is beautiful, here come the Changelings. Close your eyes and open both heart and soul to the transcendental music of the Changelings. Seductive, wondrous and varied, this quintet transports the hungry, romantic spirit beyond the toils of the day, beyond the walls of the desk, beyond the home and into tranquil bliss, an enchanted exploration of personal desires, needs and satisfying fantasy. Drifting as minstrels through the infamy of Atlanta, Georgia, Chandler Rentz, Regeana Morris, Nick Pagan, Damon Young and Paul Mercer conspire to charm and mystify you in blending Baroque ballads, modern ethereal enchantments and dark, mesmerizing, medieval incantations. Momentarily breaking the spell, we hear from this half somber, half smiling troupe concerning the imminent release of their fourth full-length CD and their plans for an upcoming tour, Summer 1999. Five musicians, all with bills, routine obligations, personal relationships and the occasional last minute surprise event manage to convene, compose, rehearse, perform and record. I am having a Brady Bunch moment here. In general, how does The Changelings win out over so many separate daily agendas?

Alive with Ellington
Appalachian Summer Festival hosts famous grandson
by Robin Tolleson When the CD Digital Duke (GRP) was released in 1987, it affirmed that the Duke Ellington legacy would ring true even into the digital age. Duke's son, Mercer, who had conducted the Duke Ellington Orchestra since his father's death in 1974, assumed that role for this album (the Digital Duke band included members of the Orchestra and others); he also co-produced the work, with contemporary keyboardist Michael Abene. Ellington alumni Clark Terry, Louie Bellson, Barrie Lee Hall, Rocky White, Norris Turney, Britt Woodman and Al Grey came aboard to keep the authentic Ellington sound intact, and saxman Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Lew Soloff, and clarinet marvel Eddie Daniels joyously assured that this next generation of great players was indeed running with the torch. Marsalis breathes fire on the speedy "Cottontail," showing respect to the original Ben Webster solo while plotting his own course. "As a young punk, I was awed even to be called for this album," he explains. "In fact, I felt intimidated. I knew all the great Ellington records, and the contributions of men like Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney. I even learned a lot of Paul Gonsalves solos years ago. I was very lucky to be on this date, and all I could hope for was to do a credible job by adapting myself to the setting."
