In his lifetime Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) achieved huge celebrity not only as a superb musician (both violinist and conductor), but also as a roving ambassador, educationalist and philanthropist. This recording of Brahms' Violin Concerto, made in 1949 with Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra is an undoubted classic of the gramophone.

A child prodigy, his playing was a perfect blend of virtuosity and expression. His long and active career also saw him exploring jazz and Indian music, as well as conducting and participating in important humanitarian work. Menuhin's greatest pride was the founding of the music school in Stoke D'Abernon that bears his name. Listen [in RealAudio] need audio help? The violin ... is part nearly of the body, vibrates with it … the tone is something which you make alone, it is flexible, it is something intimate … it is something mysterious … Menuhin in a BBC interview from 1955.

With the passing of violinist Yehudi Menuhin, at the age of eighty-two, on March 12,1999, the world lost one of its truly gifted musicians. Primarily associated with classical music, Menuhin consistently sought diverse forums for his virtuosic playing. His collaboration with Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar resulted in two groundbreaking albums — East Meets West and In Celebration, while, his pairing with French violinist Stephane Grappelli Isaac Stern , Menuhin was 'an extraordinary musician and a great humanitarian. His style of playing, particularly in his early years, was a stunning patrician elegance with a very natural musical line.'
Menuhin displayed a talent from music at a very young age. Starting to play the violin at the age of four, he made his professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra three years later. His performance of Beethoven's 'Violin Concerto' at Carnegie Hall, in 1927, sparked international acclaim. Menuhin's debut album, recorded at the age of sixteen, received the prestigious Prix du Disque in France.
The oldest child of Russian-Jewish immigrants Moshe and Marutha Menuhin, Menuhin was still a baby when he moved with his family to San Francisco. A student of Louis Persinger, concertmaster of the an Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Menuhin advanced quickly on a violin. When Persinger moved to New York, in 1925, Menuhin and his family followed.

    by Grace Halsell
Undoubtedly Moshe Menuhin, with whom I corresponded over a 12-year period until his death in 1983, would be pleased to know that his son, the famed violinist, has the same fortitude in speaking out against Zionism. And indeed, Yehudi Menuhin has, to my mind, shown even greater courage than his father. In this era, Zionism is infinitely stronger and more dangerous than when Moshe Menuhin spoke out. And also the father was one of several great liberal philosophical anti-Zionist Jews warning against Zionism. But Yehudi Menuhin stands virtually alone in his anti-Zionist stance, and this is certainly true in his field of music. Yehudi Menuhin was born in 1916 of Russian-Jewish parents who had emigrated separately by way of Palestine. Seeing with alarm the rise of a militant Zionism, Moshe Menuhin voiced the sentiments of such Jews as Martin Buber, Judah L. Magnes, Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt, all of whom identified themselves not as Zionists but as Jews of Judaism.

Calendar Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) In the late 1980s I had the opportunity to perform* for Yehudi Menuhin here in the Washington, DC area. His way of being and his presence were inspiring. I felt a deep affinity for him from the moment I met him. In conversation with him I was struck by how free he was from his own personal history as one of the great violinists of the 20th Century. He seemed paradoxically youthful and wise. Yehudi Menuhin led an extraordinary life. He was a celebrated child prodigy. Josef Gingold told me how overwhelmed he felt after hearing a New York recital played by the 11 year old Menuhin (in the 1920's). He said the playing was so magnificent that all the top violinists in New York wanted to burn their instruments immediately afterwards! When Albert Einstein heard the boy Menuhin perform around this time, he exclaimed "now I know there is a God in heaven". Menuhin expanded his commitment far beyond that of a typical violin virtuoso. His commitment to humanity, in so many expressions and projects, was phenomenal. His written utterances command in the reader a suspension of cynicism. Here is an example:

A: You can't! But you can register interest by emailing me Q: Any more information? A: Yes! Read on... Notes on the recording Pablo Casals was one of the most beloved and respected musicians of the 20th century. When he came to Puerto Rico in 1957 and founded the prestigious Casals Festival, he was immediately joined by the world’s preeminent musical talent. Each year an amazing collection of musicians gathered on this island to play in an orchestra under Maestro Casals. And beginning with pianist Rudolph Serkin on that first night in April, 1957, a veritable who's who of the musical world formed the ranks of guest performers to follow. For eighteen glorious years until his death in 1973, Maestro Casals himself held the podium at his Festival, sharing with the world, and with his friends, his great love of music. It is a little-known fact that many of the Casals Festival performances were captured on tape and even on film. Most of this material was recently restored by the Library of Congress, after having been discovered in near-disastrous condition on the island, and now resides exclusively in the Pablo Casals Museum in the capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan. Some few copies do also exist in the Library of Congress. And one tape, inexplicably, was found in the possession of an artist whose musical contribution to the Festival played no small part in its greatness.

PROFILE Yehudi's Yoga One of the greatest violinists of the 20th century revered an Indian yogi as his best music teacher With Rajiv H. Mehta, Mumbai While sitting in the waiting room of an osteopath's office in 1948, Yehudi Menuhin came across a small book on yoga. He was immediately fasinated. Yoga was a subject he knew almost nothing about, yet now, for some reason, it tenaciously gripped his attention. Little did he know then that yoga and the land whence it came would change his life. Yehudi Menuhin was one of the most lauded violinists of the twentieth century. Yet he was also famous for his affiliation with renowned hatha yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar and legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar, with whom he frequently performed. The more Menuhin learned about India and yoga after that revelatory afternoon in the doctor's office, the more he loved it. India was, he said, "the primal source, the mother country." Born in New York on April 22, 1916, to Russian-Jewish parents who had recently immigrated to America, Menuhin's exceptional musical aptitude was recognized and cultivated almost before he could walk. By the time he was seven, his performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto had gained him national fame. Before age 20, he was touring the world, gaining an international reputation as a gifted soloist. When Albert Einstein heard him play he said, "Now I know there is God in Heaven."

Nicola Benedetti plays the Szymanowski Violin Concerto and other works The Szymanowski is perhaps an unusual choice for a competition for young musicians, but the interpretation certainly convinced the judges. Karol Szymanowski was a Polish composer and this work, his first of 2 Violin Concertos, was composed in 1915 and 1916. Although Europe and many parts of the World were at war at this time, the mood of the music couldn't be further from these cataclismic events. The work was inspired by "May Nights" a poem by Polish philosopher-poet Tadeusz Micinski and the music takes its exotic, evocative and sensual mood from the words of this poem. Although it is in 3 movements played non-stop the work as a whole moves between episodes of varying colour and texture, with different tempi and instrumental combinations. It is quite demanding for the orchestra but the violin shines through with sections of dashing virtuosity and moments of breath-taking beauty. The final track is the backing track to the Thaïs Méditation. Being technically the easiest piece on the album, the intention is that violin students can practice with their own orchestral accompaniment (though it may prove difficult to maintain synchronisation). Most other listeners may want to skip this track. With this exception this is an excellent debut album from a superb artist whose stature will undoubtedly grow in the years to come. The range of works is remarkably varied which demonstrates the breadth of Nicola's talents. On this recording the London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Daniel Harding. This album is highly recommended and will be released in the UK on the Deutsche Grammophon label on 9th May. You can find more details, pre-order and listen to sound samples at this link

“Today you have again proven to me that there is a God in heaven.” — Albert Einstein on Menuhin One of the foremost virtuoso violinists of our time, Yehudi Menuhin was more than a musician. He was an idealistic supporter of hundreds of charities and causes. When the legendary violinist died of a heart attack on March 12, tributes poured in. British Prime Minister Tony Blair called him one of the greatest musicians of his age. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised him as a tireless campaigner for world peace, human rights, the environment and the United Nations. An American by birth, Menuhin lived in Europe for most of his life. He described himself as an internationalist, and in the ’50s, he contended that peace would be achieved only under a single benign world government. In 1985, he became a British subject. He had been given an honorary knighthood by Britain 19 years earlier. Politics and visions of a utopian future often seemed to he as much on his mind as music making.
