Starting to play the violin at the age of four, he made his professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra three years later. His performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto at Carnegie Hall, in 1927, sparked international acclaim. Menuhin's debut album, recorded at the age of 16, received the prestigious Prix du Disque in France. The oldest child of Russian-Jewish immigrants Moshe and Marutha Menuhin, Menuhin was still a baby when he moved with his family to San Francisco. A student of Louis Persinger, concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Menuhin advanced quickly on the violin. When Persinger moved to New York in 1925, Menuhin and his family followed. Shortly afterwards, a wealthy attorney funded Menuhin's first trip to Europe. Although he failed to impress Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye, Menuhin was accepted as a student by Romanian violinist and composer Georges Enesco. He continued to study under Enesco until returning to the United States in 1927. Menuhin continued to attract attention throughout his teens. Violinist Yehudi Menuhin Dead at 82 By Barry Willis The world is mourning the passing of Yehudi Menuhin. The 82-year-old violinist, conductor, author, educator, and humanitarian died of heart failure at Berlin's Martin Luther Hospital on Friday, March 7. He was in Berlin to conduct performances of Brahms and Mendelssohn by the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra. The son of Ukrainian-born immigrants, Menuhin was born in New York and grew up in San Francisco, where by age four he had begun studying the violin under child-prodigy specialist Sigmund Anker. His public debut took place at the age of seven, when he performed with the San Francisco Orchestra under Alfred Hertz. When he was 11, he performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto-a composition that was to become one of his signature pieces-at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony, led by Fritz Busch. After his first concert in Berlin, a few days before his 13th birthday, Albert Einstein is said to have followed him backstage and remarked, "Now I know there is a God in heaven." Menuhin made a grueling world tour in 1935, when he was only 21, giving 110 concerts in 63 cities and 13 countries. Education and world peace were Menuhin's abiding passions, causes for which he both wrote and performed. He gave more than 500 performances for Allied troops during World War II, and drew the wrath of the nation of Israel for his conciliatory gesture toward Germany, where he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic just two years after the war. Menuhin did not hesitate to speak out against military aggression of any kind, and again irritated the Israeli government by insisting on performing in Arab nations after the Six-Day War in 1967.

He has been instrumental in the organization of three European music festivals, and has also founded a school for young musicians in England. Musically, he has devoted much time to conducting, and in the last twenty years has maintained a deep interest in the music of the East. (He has collaborated on two well-known albums with Ravi Shankar, for example). While talking to Menuhin, one rarely senses that he is in his mid-fifties. Despite his knowledge of music and understanding of people which only comes with time, Menuhin's outlook on life remains as fresh as that of a young child. Perhaps this is, as he has suggested, a result of the fact that as a boy he was comparatively isolated. (A child prodigy, he made his debut playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto at age 11.) In any case, he manifests a great understanding of and interest in both people and his art. Following are excerpts from an hour-long press conference held for Menuhin while he was in Vancouver last week: YM: When I speak of contemporary music, it's not the same as when my son speaks of contemporary music. There's always the generation gap. I realise that I cannot now pretend that when I'm playing Bartok, I'm playing contemporary music, or even Schoenberg. I can't pretend that I'm riding the last crest. I don't in fact know what the last crest is. It's in the airplane that I do most of my contemporary reading, and there's this young English pianist who's the last word in rock, pop, or jazz, whatever you call it. You must know his name ... he jumps on the piano.

ANYONE who has knows where my CD-buying preferences lean to will know that I have a very large proportion of so-called "historical" recordings, usually taken before the stereo era and are thus in mono sound. There's life beyond DDD recordings and sometimes, in listening to some of these and reading a little, one can learn quite a bit about events in the world at that time. Wilhelm Furtwängler was one of the greatest conductors ever, possibly the greatest conductor on record. As an artist and as a person Furtwängler was by far one of the most charismatic, legendary - and controversial. Before the second world war, the so-called pre-war period, Furtwängler had established a career of considerable repute. His flair for conducting showed especially in the works of Beethoven, Wagner and Brahms. Ironically, his love for music was to bring himself considerable suffering. The notorious Adolf Hitler, Führer of Deutschland was also a great lover of the antisemetic Richard Wagner's works, and he admired Furtwängler's conducting to no end. It has been said that after one production of the opera Lohengrin, he went to the unnamed conductor, telling him that the tenor had sung the wrong words at a particular point.

The following paragraphs are culled from Yehudi Menuhin's book "Unfinished Journey". They provide an interesting perpective on Indian music as seen by the greatest Western violinist of this century. (This appeared in R.M.I.C . several years ago but have no information on the poster - I apologize) What the Indian music has not, and Western music richly has, is, of course, harmony. This is not fortuitous. Just because the Indian would unite himself with the infinite rather than with his neighbour, so his music assists the venture. Its purpose is to refine one's soul and discipline one's body, to make one sensitive to the infinite within one, to unite one's breath with the breath of space, one's vibrations with the vibrations of the cosmos. Outside the family, the Indian's concern does not easily fasten on the group. Europe's genius, on the other hand, has been to form individuals into communities, each accepting loss of freedom in the interests of the whole. Hence collective worship, hence armies and industries and parliamentary democracy, and hence chorales in which each voice has a certain independence but is nonetheless severely constrained by other voices. Indian music thus accomodates the group, but the individuals within it remain soloists, never coalescing into a harmonic statement. To form orchestras of Indian musicians would be to run counter to nature. I have been spared such bastard growths, but I have suffered the excruciating experience of hearing the Indian sitar or vina or violin accompanied by a harmonium, a relic of Christian missionaries' misunderstanding of the culture they were attempting to change.

The violinist's family speak for the first time about his formidable presence. After Yehudi's death, his family is coming to grips with a man some felt they hardly knew. His widow, Diana, is ailing and the family are rallying to her bedside, sharing their sense of bewilderment at life after Menuhin. "When he stopped playing the violin, that was almost a worse blow to me than when he died," reflects Jeremy, his youngest son. "People saw him as serene, but he was a very complicated man. He didn't have moods. He was either more distant or less distant. It was impossible to have an ordinary conversation with him, unless you were talking about one of his projects. The things that were furthest removed from personal feelings were all right. But anything personal was viewed as a weakness." "He wanted things to work for him," says Zamira, his daughter forgivingly. "He had so many ideas that only he could pull off. He needed space, and he was lucky enough to have people in his life who gave it to him, people like me who adored him. Even if I was upset by personal matters, I understood.
