ON Friday a musical ensemble that has specialised on early music is to celebrate its 25th anniversary with a concert at Wigmore Hall.
The ensemble was formed in 1979 and was one of the first to groups to recognise the growing enthusiasm for early music and used early instruments in an effort to maintain authenticity.
Under Peter Holman, as the harpsichordist and director, with violinists Judy Tarling and Theresa Caudle and Mark Caudle playing the bass viol, cello and bass violin, the group have become widely celebrated and have moved from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and have more recently embraced both 18th and 19th century music.
Catherine Bott is a regular collaborator and at this concert flautist Rachel Brown also joins them for this concert. For more information ring 020 7935 2141.

Commercial Printing First family of the fiddle to give rare joint concert Published Sunday, February 17, 2002 NEW YORK (AP) - Clad in black and with curly light brown hair dangling above his shoulders, he looks like a youthful Mick Jagger. He also shares a certain sympathy for the devil. But his satanic affinity extends to the caprices of Nicolo Paganini and the tricks of Luciferian double trills, left-handed plucks on the violin fingerboard and ricochet bowings. Pleased to meet you, Alexander Markov. Markov was destined to play the violin. Before he and his family emigrated to the United States in 1975, his father was a top Soviet violinist. Markov’s mother is from a family of musicians and played violin in Moscow’s Bolshoi Orchestra. Today, this first family of the fiddle plays together in a performance at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, accompanied by the elder Markov’s Rondo Chamber Players. It took Alex only one summer to learn the Paganini Caprices.

Cheryl North Interviews Constantine Orbelian ANG Newspapers Classical Music Column - February 7, 2003. Imagine the following scenario for a terrific movie: A young American concert pianist arrives in cold blustery Moscow on a December day in 1990 to begin rehearsing for his upcoming appearance with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. He is primed and ready to solo in the daunting Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1. Then, the conductor of the orchestra suddenly takes ill. He dies. The concert is to be canceled. But, like the coming of the cavalry to save the besieged fort, the young American suggests that he can not only play the scheduled Shostakovich Concerto, he can also wield a baton! Like John Wayne with sword held high rallying the troops, he proposes to play the concerto and conduct the orchestra too. They doubt, of course. But after he displays his prowess during a rehearsal, they decide they must allow him to try. The big night arrives. He swashbuckles through the performance in heroic fashion. The concert is a smashing success! They ask him to stay on as their new leader. Cut to the credits. But wait! This is not a movie scenario. It's real life and it actually happened to conductor/pianist Constantine Orbelian.

Orchestra Philharmonic de Monte Carlo conducted by Lawrence Renes ERATO [65:12] full-price by Johann D'Souza Years ago I had listened to a recording of Jascha Heifetz playing the Vieuxtemps' Fifth Concerto and, as usual, he raced through it with lightning speed full of panache and total mastery. However, it was not until I had heard Elmar Olivero - the Tchaikovsky winner - that I actually bothered to find out more about the music of Vieuxtemps. There was something in his playing that immediately drew my attention to the music. I think it must have been the combination of violin wizardry together with the pathos of Chausson thrown in, together with the fact that all this was thrown in within 19 minutes. Other concertos seem by comparison, very long (eg. the Beethoven or Brahms concertos).
