Violin Concerto
Brahms (1833-1897)
After the first two movements taken in only one and even concentration, Allegro giocoso final limpid and merry, even facetious (trilles, corrosive, spiccato), far from any dionysiaque howling. Would the listeners have preferred a bow which opera hat of the heel (whereas they claquaient teeth), a violin which pours some strong liquor in their turned blue veins, or did not have the heart to point out Tasmin Little for the test of a bis ? It will never be known, the applause remained, a little like the cold words of Rabelais, captive of the cold air.” Index

ROOM FOR CHANGE
A new crop of up-and-coming players
takes its place on the CD shelf
by Timothy Pfaff

For me, Emmanuelle Bertrand, a young French cellist whose Harmonia Mundi CD (HMN 911699) is devoted solely to 20th-century works for solo cello, holds pride of place among the latter. Her technique is so assured, her grasp of the music so thoroughly thought out, and her sense of the shape of a work so consummate and tasteful that you might, for a moment, think her Apollonian. But her expression—the full range of which can be heard in her astonishing traversal of Hans Werner Henze’s 1949 Sérénade—is shot through with what another philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, called "thoughts that wound from behind." While its surfaces are immaculate, there’s a barely contained ferocity throughout the piece, and, in the weird Tango, a patent dance with the devil. Trois strophes sur le nom de Sacher

His fans call him "The Karajan of the New Millennium," and the New York Times has dubbed him "The Maestro of Our Times." In June 1999, the members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra elected Sir Simon Rattle the sixth principal conductor in the orchestra's 120 year history. Rattle follows in the footsteps of luminaries such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.
After Wilhelm Furtwängler's death in 1954 began the era of Herbert von Karajan, who remained at the helm for thirty-five years, longer than anyone else. Karajan developed a specific "sound culture", an unprecedented degree of perfection and virtuosity that led the Berlin Philharmonic from triumph to triumph in Germany and worldwide. It was during the Karajan era that the new Berlin Philharmonie was built in 1963, and it has been the orchestra's home base ever since.
