Thomas Luckmann
The Department of Information Systems and the Institute of Social Psychology recently hosted two historic lectures with Thomas Luckmann, emeritus professor of sociology, Konstanz University, on Morality and Moral Communication in Modern Societies and The Communicative Construction of Reality . In the first, Luckmann showed that, contrary to sociological predictions, morality did not fade away into oblivion, but lives on in pluralist formats, increasingly in the genre of indirect moralising. He entertainingly demonstrated this with anecdotes of dinner conversations. In his second lecture, he took the opportunity to assess the impact of his (in)famous book, Social Construction of Reality , some 40 years on. He showed how, over 60 years, the communicative paradigm has moved from the margins to the centre of the social sciences assisted by phenomenology in various guises: social interaction is the basic unit of analysis. He told of the difficulties of convincing a publisher to take that book, and he now doubted the wisdom of the title he and his co-author Peter Berger had chosen. Professor Luckmann continually addressed the problems of doing sociology, rather than theorising about it. He concluded his second lecture by saying: 'After all, they are what human communication and interactions are intended to produce. However, in the past decades, taking the new technologies for granted, we have been in an increasingly better position to direct our efforts to an analysis of the 'production process' in relation to the 'product' and in relation to the 'consumption' of the 'product', ie, to an analysis of interaction and dialogue both as part of social reality and as source of much of social reality. It was the interplay of various theoretical and technological reasons and circumstances which produced the shift to the so-called communicative paradigm. A rather substantial change in social theory and sociological methodology.'

Saturday 23 October 2004 New Vic Tunes Up With Virtuoso Violinist
A Day For Violinists featuring Tasmin Little Budding Nigel Kennedy's and Vanessa Mae's will be pulling and plucking the strings at the New Vic Theatre as violin virtuoso Tasmin Little heads a fun workshop. Violinists at Grade 6 and above will enjoy an exploratory day with practical tips and techniques between 10am and 4.30pm on Saturday 23 October.
As part of Listen Up!, an initiative devised by BBC Radio 3, the Association of British Orchestras and Making Music, the day will include sessions on early music technique, Alexander Technique, folk fiddling, and classical music for violin. Whilst not being a master-class, this is a wonderful way for violinists to meet others and try out different styles.
One of the world's leading violinists, Tasmin Little is a much acclaimed soloist. Beyond her solo performances her dedication to chamber music has lead to appearances from Paris to Tokyo. Joining Tasmin to share their tips and tricks will be Kate Fawcett, a specialist in baroque violin and viola, and Margaret Heaton, a former member of the internationally renowned Halle Orchestra. The folk fiddle session will be led by Aidan Broadbridge.

Orchestra's 'just great' at Schubert
An almost capacity crowd packed into the Ulster Hall at the weekend to hear the Ulster Orchestra conducted by Thierry Fischer with the internationally renowned violinist Tasmin Little. Although no stranger to Belfast, this lady, also an advocate of chamber music, has performed as a concerto soloist with many of the world's greatest orchestras and conductors. The concert began with Nielsen's Overture Helios. Perhaps I am a little harsh here but I found this piece a bit underwhelming. The opening seemed to be unsettled with pedal notes and horn calls not totally in unison. The atmosphere wasn't helped by the clattering of latecomers. None of this mattered, however, after the first phrase of Brahms's violin concerto. One could tell that this performance was going to be special. Mr Fischer began at a relatively fast speed, generating a heightened sense of expectancy from the outset. Tasmin Little's playing was superbly controlled and nothing short of dazzling in places. Although not technically flawless, the emotional element in her playing bordered on seductive - there was some real edge-of-the-seat fiddle playing loaded with flair and passion. The partnership between soloist and orchestra was ideal. Christopher Blake played the oboe solo in movement two with supreme sensitivity.

In yet another post Sept. 11 related incident, violinist Lara St. John was wrestled to the ground by an armed guard at New York's La Guardia airport when she tried to stop him from inspecting her instrument. The incident was quickly resolved and the violinist dismissed it as a misunderstanding.
St. John, a rising young virtuoso in classical music, reportedly lunged at the guard when he attempted to touch her $1 million Guadagnini violin with a cloth. The violinist said later that she thought the cloth might contain chemicals that would do harm to the instrument's finish. She reportedly cried out, "No! No! It's an antique!"
St. John's violin dates from 1779 and was made by the Italian master in Turin. The violin is on loan to St. John from an anonymous donor. She says she prefers it to the 1702 Lyall Stradivarius which she previously played.

Bradford University's Fellow in Music Antony Hall is to leaving after four years in post - but has made sure his last concert will be one to remember. He will bow out when the university's Wind Orchestra and Chorus play at Bradford Cathedral tomorrow in their last concert of the season with a programme including Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla Overture, Sibelius' Second Symphony and Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. Mr Hall will become a freelance professional trumpet when he leaves the job - which is usually only for two or three years - on August 31. A new Fellow in Music will be appointed. In his time based at the university's Tasmin Little Music Centre, he has sought to diversify the repertoire of its many ensembles.

World's First Portable Toilet
Today's New York Times "Patents" column by Teresa Riordan brings us news of the invention we've been waiting for since forever: a toilet that folds up to look like an attach© case. Said inventor Susan Perry Hinton, a pharmacy professor at Xaviar University in New Orleans, of her creation (U.S. Patent No. 6,782,565), "No one would ever know you're carting a toilet around." Nuff said. Hinton's husband Calvin has found a couple companies interested in producing the seat, which they've named the Perry Potty portable toilet seat. As always, necessity was the mother of invention.
