22. Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras | History
Ernest Pereira, a violinist with the CSO, became the first conductor, and SarahBriggs, miriam kramer was a guest conductor at the Fall Concert.
http://www.csyo.net/history.html
The Piedmont Youth Symphony was formed by Frank West of Davidson College where it continued to meet until 1961.
This Youth Orchestra had its formal beginning when David Serrins, then Principal Oboe of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, obtained a combined sponsorship from the Mecklenburg County School System and the Queen City Optimist Club. Both David Serrins and Tom Lewis (Charlotte Symphony Orchestra members) conducted this orchestra.
Richard Cormier was hired as the first full-time conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and Robert Maddox became the associate conductor. The Piedmont Youth Symphony was renamed The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra with Dr. Maddox as its conductor.
Jacques Brourman became conductor of the CSO and it was during his tenure that significant growth occurred for the Youth Orchestra. Maestro Brourman was a tireless innovator who took a great interest in training young musicians.
The structure of the Youth Orchestra program, a project conceived by Maestro Brourman, became a reality. The Charlotte Symphony Women’s Association (now The Symphony Guild of Charlotte, Inc.) undertook the sponsorship of the Youth Orchestra by providing funds for three vital aspects: scholarships for private study; coaching by Charlotte Symphony members; and a week-long clinic-retreat prior to the beginning of the season. The Symphony Guild began its annual ASID Designer House project to support the Youth Symphony. This support continues today. At this time the name of the orchestra was changed to the Youth Symphony of the Carolinas. From 1972-78 the YSOC expanded to include not only seasonal concerts, but also performances in Festival in the Park, Young People’s Concerts in the schools, the Nutcracker series, Young Artist Concerts, two world premiere performances, and a series of television programs in 1975 and 1977 with WTVI.

Fennell was nominated for the honor by Patricia Dengler George '64E, '65E (Mas), who teaches at the university. George toured Europe and the Mideast with Fennell when he was assistant conductor of the Eastman Philharmonia. George says she "has movies (the old 8mm kind) of Fennell and Howard Hanson riding camels at the Pyramids."
Horn and Conductor , by Harold Meek, was recently published by the University of Rochester Press. The book features a foreword by Alfred Mann, emeritus professor of musicology at Eastman.
50TH REUNION, OCTOBER 17-19, 1997
In the print version of this issue, we published an incorrect report that Anastasia Jempelis had retired from the Eastman School's Community Education in May. Jempelis continues to teach in the division. Rochester Review regrets the error.

We believe that there is no substitute for being able to work and learn alongside the best in the world. We introduce gifted young people to individuals who have made a difference in the world and can make that difference work for others. We have identified artists and teachers - on the international platform and behind the scenes - who bring to the wider Samling community expertise, insight and above all inspiration. Their number is growing.
Sir Thomas Allen C.B.E. (Baritone) Patron of The Samling Foundation
Thomas Allen is an established star of the great opera houses of the world. At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where in 2001 he celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of his debut with the company, he has sung over forty roles. Last year, he also celebrated his twentieth anniversary of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He has been particularly acclaimed for his Billy Budd, Pelleas, Eugene Onegin, Count Almaviva, Sixtus Beckmesser and, of course, Don Giovanni, roles he has made his own all over the world. Equally renowned on the concert platform, he appears in recital in the United Kingdom, throughout Europe, in Australia and America, and has appeared with the world's great orchestras and conductors. The greatest part of his repertoire has been extensively recorded.

The choir's musical director and conductor is Roger Moon. Roger has been playing the piano since he was six, being largely self-taught until he began jazz piano studies under Peter Ind in his late teens. He began conducting choirs at about the same time. He later took a degree in Performance Arts at Middlesex Polytechnic, and attended the famous Canford conductors' course. Roger now divides his time between piano playing and working with groups of amateur singers. He leads day workshops, evening classes and residential weekends for choral singers of all abilities in many parts of the country, and recently led a multi-lingual singing workshop in Brussels. He plays in many styles and contexts, from ballet accompanying to recitals with the violinist Miriam Kramer. His jazz group, which includes some of the finest players in the UK, has presented a series of sell-out concerts, as fund raisers for the choir, playing tribute to Benny Goodman, the Gershwins, 'The Great Songwriters'. The next jazz fund raiser is ' The Jazz Greats ', on 14th May at
