Born in Italy, the first forms of the violin sonata were imbued with the exotic and wild beauty of early exploration and invention. Violinist Jeanne Johnson-Watkins and harpsichordist Yuko Tanaka of the early music chamber ensemble Music of the Spheres illuminate the early violin sonata through the works of Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi. The program also includes harpsichord toccatas by Rossi, Frescobaldi, and Froberger.

EMA Medieval/Renaissance Performance Competition 2004 Early Music America, with the support of a generous individual donor, sponsored the first Medieval/Renaissance Performance Competition in 2004. The purpose of this competition is to encourage the development of emerging artists in the performance of medieval and Renaissance music. The winner of the competition receives a cash prize and a concert performance sponsored by EMA at the Boston Early Music Festival in June 2005. The winner of the 2004 competition was Asteria (Sylvia Rhyne, soprano, and Eric Redlinger, tenor and lute), based in New York, NY. EMA/Naxos Recording Competition 2003 The winners of this competition were selected by Klaus Heymann and his colleagues at Naxos from a group of 7 finalists previously announced by EMA. The competition was for early music soloists and ensembles, and the prize is a debut CD recording, which will be produced and marketed by Naxos. EMA and Naxos hope to promote the career development of early music performers and the philosophy of historically informed performance by offering to the public recordings of the highest quality. Both the Grand Prize Winner and the 1st Runner Up will be recorded by Naxos. Grand Prize Winner
