Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' opens concert series at the Z
Le Nozze di Figaro By John Ackerman Standard-Times correspondent
Mozart's tuneful opera, "The Marriage of Figaro," will open the 1995-1996 season for the Greater New Bedford Concert Series. Staged by the Western Opera Theatre, the opera will be presented at the Zeiterion Theatre at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Mozart's musical recounting of love, desire and philandering is one of the world's most popular operas. San Francisco director Peter McClintock has staged the opera; Rodolfo Fisher of Chile will conduct. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
The production of the opera has won high praise from critics in San Francisco, San Jose and San Mateo; the artists and the set came in for high critical applause.
Among the cast members is Stephen Salters of Milford, Conn. A graduate of Boston University, he recently received critical acclaim for his performance in the Boston Lyric Opera's production of "The Barber of Seville." Mr. Salters, a baritone, has performed extensively as a soloist, both in concert and in recitals.
Among other artists to be seen and heard will be bass-baritone John Haley-Relyea of Toronto, Australian tenor Stuart Skelton, and mezzo-soprano Maria Wood, a native of North Carolina.

A prodigious talent that defies labels
November 5, 2004 Hilary Hahn's calendar is crowded and she intends to keep it that way. ADVERTISEMENT Three or four times a week during the season, the 24-year-old violinist appears with major orchestras or in important recital series in America and Europe. At a time when significant musicians have to create their own record labels to promote their work, Hahn stepped easily from Sony Classical, where she won a Grammy in 2002, to Deutsche Grammophon, where she is being promoted as part of the new generation of classical musicians who will capture the public imagination and dominate the music business the way their predecessors, also at Deutsche Grammophon, did. She wastes no time; when she travels, she keeps a diary of her adventures and posts it on her website. Her wispy glamour photos mask the steadiness of purpose that has brought her to where she is. Hahn played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra last season, and Saturday she makes her local recital debut in Jordan Hall, presented by the Bank of America Celebrity Series. She is an extraordinary instrumentalist with strong musical ideas that are all her own, fabulous intonation, and a beautiful, clear, clean, modern tone "nothing schmaltzy about it," says her Grammy Award-winning producer, Thomas Frost, who made records with such legendary figures as Vladimir Horowitz and Rudolf Serkin.

DAVID LOCKINGTON
Over the past twenty years, David Lockington has developed an impressive conducting career in the United States. A native of Great Britain, he was appointed the Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in January 1999 and is the former Music Director of the New Mexico Symphony and the Long Island Philharmonic. Since his arrival to the United States in 1978, Lockington's conducting activities have included serving as Music Director of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Denver Young Artist's Orchestra and the Boulder Bach Festival. In addition, he was founder and conductor of the Academy in the Wilderness Chamber Orchestra and for three years held the post of Assistant Conductor with the Denver Symphony Orchestra and Opera Colorado. Following an extensive nationwide search, Lockington was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in September 1992 and one year later was promoted to the position of Associate Conductor. In May 1993, he accepted the position of Music Director of the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, assumed the title of Music Director of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in September 1995 and was Music Director of the Long Island Philharmonic for the 1996/97 through 1999/2000 seasons. In addition to conducting the classical series, casual classics and a variety of education and touring programs in Grand Rapids, Lockington's guest conducting engagements have included appearances with the Saint Louis, Houston, Detroit, Seattle, Indianapolis, Vancouver, Colorado and Pacific symphonies, the Buffalo, Rochester and Louisiana Philharmonics and the Orchestra of St. Luke's. He has also conducted the China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra in Beijing and Taiwan and led the English Chamber Orchestra on a tour in Asia.

June 29: Michael Krajewski , the principal pops conductor of four orchestras, will conduct the festival orchestra. He leads popular music for symphony orchestras in Houston; New Mexico; Long Beach, Fla.; and Jacksonville, Fla. Krajewski gets the honor of opening the EMF season, which, like last year, begins with a pops concert.
Noted for a wry sense of humor that plays itself out onstage in imaginative programming, Krajewski has guest conducted orchestras such as the Boston Pops and symphony groups in North Carolina, San Diego, Baltimore, Atlanta and many other places. He also has performed with Judy Collins, Roberta Flack, Doc Severinsen, Cab Calloway and Ben E. King, among others.
A native of Detroit, Krajewski lives in Orlando with his wife, Darcy, and two cats, Spenser and Foster.
