• Page E5 Despite the well-publicized cutbacks in the classical music recording industry, high-quality releases keep finding their way to the marketplace. While there are fewer coming from the big companies, smaller firms (perhaps devoted more to the music and less purely to the bottom line) are filling the gap with plenty of interesting material - and the biggies aren't dead yet. "The Earliest Songbook in England" (Gothic Voices; Christopher Page, director. Hyperion CDA67177) may have an unimaginative title, but its music is winning. It gets its name from its source material, "a few leaves of parchment folded together, poorly written, decayed by damp, marred by stains and the ravages of time," as Page writes in the liner notes. Copied by an unknown collector around 1200, preserved by being recycled as flyleaves in another volume, these monophonic (solo) and polyphonic (written for multiple voices) are mostly religious in nature, but sometimes move into secular territory. Charming tunes like "Magno guadens gaudio" and sophisticated writing as found in "Ad honorem salvatoris" (in two versions) help to make this a disc of interest. From the oddly named label Discipline Global Mobile comes "Josquin des Prez: Sixteenth-Century Lute Settings," thoughtfully and stylishly played by Jacob

One thing I will say right out – I love critical listening; it brings me so much closer to the music. When using a good system, I can immerse myself in the music and really try to get at my own understanding of it. While I may try to focus on certain aspects of the music (how does it do highs, bass, separation etc), I still find myself really enjoying the experience of listening. In reviewing these interconnects, my main priority is to isolate which one brings me closest to what I feel is natural sound. I am a huge classical music fan, and I know what chamber music sounds like in a concert hall – this is what I look for when I evaluating components.
From there I went to Tortoise’s TNT. This is post rock that is a mixture of percussion, electronic music, some guitar, and field recordings. I found that the 1010’s again had a wider soundstage. They were a tad less forward while maintaining detail and clarity. The XRS had a smaller soundstage, but they still gave the sense of being enveloped by sound. They were quite involving, and certainly rocked – on occasion, the top end detail became less than comfortable…these sections were few and far between.
On Rachmaninov’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the XRS sounded heavenly. This is Russian Orthodox Church music, and it consists of a large male and female choir. Ukrainian basses reach deeper than almost any other singers, while the sopranos go very high. The tone that the XRS displayed was equal to the 1010’s, while the choir sounded a bit wider left to right on the 1010s.

Come to Heard Theatre, have a seat for season
I f you didn't buy season tickets to the Broadway in Columbus Series last year, but want to buy them for 2005-06, the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts will open its doors Saturday. You're allowed to go into the Bill Heard Theatre between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to choose where you want to sit. Of course, last year's season ticket holders who have renewed their tickets have already chosen their seats, so you'll have to pick vacant seats. The seats already chosen will be clearly marked. The shows this year are " Thoroughly Modern Millie ," Oct. 9; "

CATALPA 65896-30101 (72:57) Ronald Sat provides sensitive, atmospheric support, and Catalpa's engineers have captured the full bloom of the Stradivari upon which she plays. But the violinist's unique poetry, personalizing each of the diverse works, carries the recital. This sensitivity, rarer now perhaps than in past generations, should ingratiate her with audiences. And this first collection deserves morethoughtful attention than that almost automatically accorded to the megahyped debuts of hothoused prodigies. Highly recommended. Robert Maxham
Icelandic violinist Judith Ingolfsson is the 1998 gold medal winner of the quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, the violin world's most prestigious prize. Her artistry was recently heralded as "effortless; her tone ravishingly beautiful, pure and adaptable; her sense of style unerring; and her expressiveness simple, direct and strongly felt (Strings)."
