It was originally formed for nine concerts, its name picked out of thin air for the occasion. Yet the Beaux Arts Trio Daniel Hope and cellist Antonio Meneses Pressler is an extraordinary figure in his own right. He is one of those few pianists whose sound can be recognised at once: smooth, sparkling, mercurial, singing and pure at the same time. Robert Earl Keen's fab stories enliven Picnic
By TIM PERLICH *ROBERT EARL KEEN Picnic (Arista Austin, import) Rating: NNNNN Texas troubadour Robert Earl Keen has always been a storyteller who happens to write songs. For too long he has reserved his exceptional yarn-spinning talent for filling the gaps between tunes during his intimate club appearances. But, happily, he reassessed his strengths before making Picnic. For this, his John Keane-produced debut with the newly formed Arista Austin imprint, Keen has neatly constructed a provocative montage of probing, almost cinematic vignettes that shift locales with a seamless flow. From a fistfight in a seedy downtown barroom to standing waist-deep in wheat on dry, windswept farmland and on to the Mexican border in a beat-up GMC, only to end up in a Chinese cafe reminiscing with Margo Timmins who lends her breathy voice to five songs Keen brings the scenes to life with his earthy wit, attention to subtle detail and that warm, colloquial directness that gives his live performances the comfortable feel of, well, like the title says, a picnic. *OLD 97'S Too Far To Care (Elektra, import) Rating: NNNN

The rest of the band is: Manashe Sasson, on Santur; Nitsan-Ken Razel, violin; Samson Khamkar on violin, the sitar and the flute; Ilan Ben-Ami, guitar; Yael Offenbach, Tabla; and Yaacob Segal, piano, ud, and bass. Habrera hativeet have 9 CDs, some of which were originally released in LP. The group tours extensively world wide. The website features a video clip from The 11th Jewish Music Festival in Cracow - Poland, July 2001. Having attended a concert of this group at Brandeis, I can attest to the excitement experienced in a HH concert.
