MUSICA: CRITICA

Japan in Cambridge 3 December 2001 East meets West at Cambridge today (Monday 3 December, 2001), when scientists and musicians swap ideas and musical traditions.
During the day a group of research specialists from the University of Tokyo will join with their Cambridge counterparts for a symposium on recent work involving nuclear transplantation, gene reprogramming, and stem cell differentiation. Then this evening at Churchill College, the conductor and violinist Joji Hattori and the London Mozart Players will perform works by Takemitsu, Dan, Bacj, Elgar and Tchaikovsky. Both events are part of Japan 2001 , the national celebration of Japanese culture which involves 1,500 separate events across the UK. The University has been heavily involved in the festival since it began in May. Earlier in the year exhibitions of historical and contemporary Japanese art were held at the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle's Yard. In November Churchill College staged a photographic exhibiton which used images from family photo albums to trace the history of Japanese people living in Britain since 1863. Last month Churchill College also hosted a three-day conference on Anglo-Japanese economic relations. UK and Japanese experts met to discuss developments from the late 19th century, when British experts helped Japan with its industrialisation, to the post-1945 world in which Japanese companies play a major part in British economic and financial life.

Musicorda Celebrates a Decade of Dedication to Music
Cellist Wilhelmina Smith will perform as guest artist at the final concert of Musicorda's tenth anniversary year. Fittingly, the former Amherst resident was also a soloist at Musicorda's very first concert, in 1987. Musicorda's concerts feature internationally known musiciansincluding some former studentswho are in demand on the world's great concert stages. Some current students have already played at Carnegie Hall and have their own recordings. "We're known coast-to-coast and in other countries as the equal of Tanglewood and Aspen music festivals for soloists and chamber music," says Jackie Melnick, the festival's administrative director. Yet their courses and concerts are better known in the Berkshires and Britain than right here on campus. Perhaps people may not be clear on what Musicorda does because it does so much. The summer festival is run by Melnick (MHC professor emeritus of music) and her husband Terry Teraspulsky (Musicorda's artistic director and UMass professor emeritus of music), and includes four major initiatives: There are two weekly concerts throughout the summer, the "Festival Series" and "Young Artist Series" performances. Renowned professional musicians perform each Friday in the Festival Series, which includes preconcert discussions about each evening's offerings and postconcert receptions with the artists. In Musicorda's ten summers, "393 compositions have been played in festival concerts; and 122 different composers' works have been played, including fifty-nine twentieth-century composers and thirty-nine American composers."

Opera , by the leading young composer Morgan Hayes, takes its title from the 1987 film by the Italian director Dario Argento, famed for his work in the giallo horror genre. Though the story concerns a jinxed production of Verdi's opera Macbeth, the intense, highly charged music relates less to the physical action than to the prowling camerawork, abrupt jump-cutting and other techniques that contribute to the heightened melodrama uniquely characteristic of Argento's style.
Lasting about seven minutes, Opera has already been featured by several leading young violinists offering exciting new material in their recitals, and will be no less valued for its technical and interpretative challenges as a conservatoire test-piece at diploma level. A recording by Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea is due for forthcoming release on the prestigious NMC label.

Simon Dinnigan Biog - Page 3 He has performed new works by Nikita Koshkin, Gordon McPherson, David Bedford and Anthony Jackson to name but a few. In June 2000, Simon gave a concert at the Wigmore Hall with the violinist Joji Hattori. He has since performed with the flautist Robert Winn, the Almira String Quartet and the Schidloff String Quartet. Although Simon made his first recording at just 12 years, it wasn’t until 1995 that he made his first commercial debut recording, which was re-released on the P3 Label in 2002. He went on to record an exciting new Double Concerto for Guitar, Electric Bass and String Orchestra by the esteemed British composer Andrew Downes. But his fame found new impetus with the release of “Favourite Guitar Works” on the Classic FM/BMG Conifer label. Simon's CD was one of the best selling in the collection and can be heard frequently on Classic FM. Subsequent releases include a collection of guitar works on the RCA Victor label that features Simon alongside Julian Bream and John Williams.
