Tokyo Ensemble
, directed by the violinist Joji Hattori, gave its debut at the Kioi Hall on the 30th April. The ensemble has 18 string players, among them Choi Munsu, Tomoko Kawada, Sadao Harada, and Hiroshi Ikematsu, and are joined by wind players as necessary.
In the opening Dvorak's Waltz, warm and velvety sound from the string section, characteristic of this ensemble, as well as the naturally secure intonation were already evident. This was followed by the commissioned work Two Fragments for Solo Violin and Quartet: Black and Yellow by the late Ikuma Dan which combined the enjoyment of Dan's easily accessible musical language with the visual entertainment of black-and-yellow costume. The third work Dvorak's String Quintet No.2 seemed less polished, however it left a potential for further experiment in programming - they are planning to continue incorporating chamber works in an orchestral concert.
With the guest viola player Masao Kawasaki and Hattori himself as the soloists, the final work Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart was very enjoyable and full of lively spirit. Instead of trying to compete with each other's individual interpretations and techniques, the two soloists agreeably made their musical personalities come through and supported each other. This, together with very fine playing from the orchestra resulted in a pleasantly convincing performance. The concept of this newly established ensemble is to create an environment in which the performers and the audience are able to share the joy of ensemble playing: tonight's program successfully reflected this with its diversity of works included and the vitality evident throughout.

Biography
and
Concept
The Tokyo Ensemble is a chamber orchestra consisting of leading Japanese string players, with additional wind players according to the program. Performances of the Ensemble feature both chamber orchestra as well as chamber music repertoire.
Founded by the conductor and violinist Joji Hattori in 2001, the Tokyo Ensemble was already so successful in its first year that it was invited by Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall to perform within its prestigious concert series in September 2002. It has since performed both domestically and internationally, including a concert in Seoul in 2002 and an acclaimed tour of Portugal with the renowned pianist Maria Joao Pires in June 2003.
The Tokyo Ensemble aims to display its expressive and communicative style through the versatility of the repertoire as well as through its appearance, with elegant costumes in black and yellow, the Ensemble's image colors. For its inaugural concert, the distinguished Japanese composer, Ikuma Dan dedicated a new work "Two Fragments in Black and Yellow" to the Ensemble.
Future plans include a China tour and a return to Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in Autumn 2005. In August 2006, they are planning a tour to Vancouver, Canada.

She was be one of the youngest ever violinists to perform in this celebrated festival, opening the special Violins Day at 2.30pm on Saturday July 30 with a beautiful solo performance of music by Bach, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, which was acclaimed by audience and critics alike: “There could be no better way to open a three-concert day devoted to the violin than a solo from Britain's foremost young fiddler: the 15-year-old Jennifer Pike stepped on to the platform and delivered the prelude (and gavotte en rondeau) from Bach's Third Partita with perfect poise and assurance, her instrument sounding clear and strong." The Independent 2 August 2005 “The most rewarding part of the whole five-hour venture came in the first five minutes, when 15-year-old Jennifer Pike played a pair of movements from Bach's solo Partita No 3 with great subtlety and composure.”

There's no smoke without jazz
The first Genius of the Violin Festival was, for all intents and purposes, a sensational success. Its main goal - to celebrate every aspect of the violin's past, present and future - was met in stunning style. It was a thrill to be part of it and I'm really thankful for the chance to be involved in so many ways. Indeed, it was a privilege to be in a position to help broaden peoples' awareness of the violin beyond the classical sphere. I was involved in four concerts and I also contributed some words on jazz violin for the souvenir programme. There were two dates at the 606 Club, the Violin Summit with Mike Piggott, Stuart Hall, John Etheridge, Tom Cawley, Ole Rasmussen and Tom Hooper, and the group night with Orquestra Mahatma and my quartet sharing the evening. The two nights saw the famous little basement jazz club in Chelsea stuffed out, even turning people away! Radio 3 recorded the Summit gig for Jazz Line-up. It featured solo sets from the three violinists and a selection of triumphant ensemble pieces featuring everyone. I got so excited by the idea of us all mucking-in together I even wrote one tune just for the night, entitled 'There She Is'. Stuart brought a Hemeto Pascael tune, Mike suggested Dancy Dancy by John Handy and I wrote out arrangements of Undecided and a transcription of Bud Powell's version of 'Get Happy'. Great fun and I hope we can do it again. Complete respect to Susanne Barthelmes, Joji Hattori, Philip Shepherd et al for their incredible achievement. The next Genius Of the Violin Festival is scheduled for February 2006 and promises to include new aspects about the violin in art and in cinema. Can't wait.
