Hilary Hahn, violin; Marek Janowski (Shostakovich) and Hugh Wolff (Mendelssohn) conducting the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. (Sony Classical, SK 89921) With these recent releases we find two different approaches to the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, both good. It's interesting that this concerto has become a vehicle for young violinists; Midori, Vengerov, and Repin all recorded it between 1994 and 1995, and now we have this pair. American violinist Hilary Hahn, 22, plays Shostakovich's dark, devastating concerto a little slower in the slow movements and a lot faster in the fast movements than Russian Ilya Gringolts, 20. Hahn's performance is the more harrowing of the two; Gringolts' is the more expressive.

Fulfilling her promise
By Julia Zaustinsky At 19, American violinist Hilary Hahn is one of the most impressive and musically compelling artists in the ever-growing galaxy of young virtuosos. Her virtuosity transcends technical perfection and violinistic wizardry. She is a master musician whose playing is illumined by a love for music and the need to communicate. "Music, for me, is interaction—interaction with the audience and with colleagues," she says. "I play each piece of music the way I would like to hear it if I were in the audience." On stage, Hahn’s intense concentration grips the audience from the moment her bow touches the string. Immediately, she launches her listeners on a spellbinding musical journey. Her playing speaks from the heart with an intelligence, eloquence, and nobility that places her among the great interpreters of our time. Hahn’s extraordinary musical gifts were apparent at an early age. She made her debut as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony when she was 11. Her 1993 debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra was followed by engagements with the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and other major orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. At 16, she completed the Curtis Institute’s graduation requirements, made her Carnegie Hall debut (again with the Philadelphia Orchestra), and signed an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical. Her first CD (Sony 62793)—a patrician performance of the last three of Bach’s monumental Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin—received France’s

If you've seen the movie The Village you may have noticed James Newton Howard's wonderful score accompanying it. Howard's score features solo violinist Hilary Hahn who, at age 24, is one of the most talented musicians on her instrument. She's already won a Grammy, performed with dozens of orchestras around the world and captivated millions of classical fans with the rich tones she generates on her violin. Here is Hilary's own take on her work for James Newton Howard. Here's an article from 1999 in which Hahn talks about her music education. Finally, here is a schedule of her upcoming performances. Nothing too close to Indiana but if she comes to Chicago, Cincinnati or, of course, Indianapolis, it would be well your money to go to hear her live. Posted by Matthew at August 24, 2004 08:29 AM

So, why is this CD our weekly pick? Because that is what being a soloist is all about: exploring territory, some of it more traveled than others, to see what diamonds you may find lying on the ground. Hahn finds many, scattered though they are between fields of English green. She and Sir Colin Davis, leading the London Symphony Orchestra, turn the middle movement, a placid Andante, into a mini-tone poem. Davis and Hahn shape one passage near the center into a peak, a watershed on which the rest of the music falls this way or that. Also included is the best-known English piece for violin and orchestra, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. Hahn takes a songlike approach, bringing a rich cantabile sound to a work usually mined for its color. Reach the critic at (602) 444-8927

Soprano Deborah Voigt
What the stars are up to onstage and off. After a trying 2004, Deborah Voigt got off to a strong start in 2005, winning rave reviews in Germany for her first-ever portrayal of the Marschallin in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier . Nevertheless, the Berliner Morgenpost felt compelled to preface its applause with comments on Voigt’s weight, noting that the usually zaftig soprano reportedly shed some 80 pounds in recent months. Voigt, as you may recall, became something of a poster child for the weight-challenged when Covent Garden fired her last year from a production of Ariadne auf Naxos because the casting director didn’t think she would look good in the slinky evening dress he picked out for the part. Voigt’s troubles were compounded by the series of hurricanes that hit Florida, where she makes her home. The stress of dealing with the devastating storms led her to pull out of a Vancouver production of Rosenkavalier last fall that was supposed to serve as a warm-up for her Berlin Marschallin. Even without a dry run, the German critics said the trimmed-down Voigt’s performance was an “undisputed success.” This spring, Voigt takes her Marschellin to the Vienna State Opera. The Minnesota Orchestra, meanwhile, has just announced that Voigt will sing Tosca in concert during the 2005-06 season.
