Appreciations and Events Prof. Christopher CanagaRetna Christopher CanagaRetna was truly an exceptional person, and it was a great privilege to have known him and to have been his dearest friend for over 55 years. I recall with nostalgia his telling me on several occasions with transparent sincerity, "Dennis, you are my closest friend ".
I first met Christopher in 1947 when he was just 15- years- old and was admitted to St. Joseph's College, Colombo. Christopher was a quiet, studious and somewhat shy boy, quite unlike me by nature. He and I were the most contrary persons, but fortunately, fate decreed that we build up an enduring, enjoyable and rewarding friendship.
I can still vividly recall my first real encounter with him. I had heard that Christopher was a violinist and one evening in order to have some fun at his expense, I bicycled to his Barnes Place home where he lived with his
parents. On arrival I informed him that I had heard that he was a competent violinist and that I had come to audition him. I Instructed him to get his violin and bow, music stand and music sheets, and play something for me. Christopher complied without protest. I was very pleasantly surprised by the exquisite quality of his rendition of 'Meditation ' from Thais by Massenet. I then realised that I was in the presence of a talented and gifted person. Even today after over 55 years, I can still picture the event. Christopher, a plump, diffident schoolboy producing delightful music from an inanimate instrument, while swaying from side to side as he moved the bow over the strings.

Click here for audio of Episode 630. Today, a genius takes pleasure in a world of his own making. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. H ere's a Gainsborough painting. It's a man in his 40s with a fine, clear-eyed face. He's someone you'd like to know. But who is he? A second miniature version of the painting finally turned up in 1973. It had his name on it. He's John Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, born in 1735. As a young man he worked in Paris as a mathematical-instrument maker. He made clocks and other fine machines. Merlin's contemporary James Watt also started in that trade. Merlin was a mechanical prodigy. The Spanish Ambassador to England knew of him. He brought him to London in 1760. Merlin was soon running with Johann Christian Bach, Thomas Gainsborough, Samuel Johnson, and Horace Walpole. This mechanic may have run in fast company. But his work makes it clear that his genius was no pretense.

David Ross MacDonald Poignant, haunting, hypnotic fingerstyle guitar Best known as the drummer for the Australian folk group The Waifs, his most recent album “Far From Here” is a revelation, showcasing his substantial skills as a singer-songwriter. “Far From Here” was selected in the Acoustic Guitar Magazines "Best of 2004" reviewer’s choice. A singer/songwriter and finger-style guitarist in his own right, David Ross Macdonald has performed internationally at events including the Calgary, Port Fairy and Woodford folk festivals. Macdonald adds a very human dimension to his intense and engaging performances with a collection of songs that meld current life with history’s lessons and meaning to the seemingly mundane.
MacDonald’s vocals, lyrics, and intricate fingerstyle guitar playing bring to mind a collaboration between Nick Drake and a mid-1970s Bruce Cockburn. Like the latter, MacDonald’s well-constructed songs often use imagery drawn from nature, oceans and forests, in particular, but unlike Cockburn, MacDonald occasionally portrays the natural world as an unpredictable and potentially threatening realm as in "The Pearl," an epic tale of two pearl-diving brothers ends in tragedy.
Imagine traveling about Australia visiting 12 favorite luthiers and recording, on guitars they have built, twelve of your original tunes for an album. The results would be stunning if you could play and write like David Ross Macdonald. His first album “Southern Crossing” is an accomplished acoustic album for those who love guitar, and for those who build guitars. The pieces are for the most part contemplative, the sort of music guitarists manage late in a successful lone session when they're in a groove and smiling inwardly, broadly.

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 29, 2002 DEAR JERRY: While playing a video trivia game recently, one question given me to answer was “Name the first recording artist to receive a Platinum award.” I believed the answer to be Peter Frampton, for his album “Frampton Comes Alive,” so that was my response. However, the machine said I was wrong. It claimed the first Platinum LP is Iron Butterfly's “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” a 1968 release. One reason I question this information is that I don't believe that the Platinum award even existed before 1976. Please settle this for me.
DEAR JOE: According to the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America), neither you nor the video game is correct, though you are much closer to the facts than your electronic quizmaster. Here is the timeline with regard to this matter: December 3, 1968: the RIAA certified Iron Butterfly's “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” Gold. March 4, 1976: The second Platinum award album is Bob Dylan's “Desire.” April 8, 1976: “Frampton Comes Alive” gets its Platinum certification. January 26, 1993: “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” is certified Platinum (actually multi-Platinum).

"Viktoria Mullova is not only an astonishing violinist and probingly individual musician but an unsurpassed communicator, the music leaping out at you." The Daily Telegraph Viktoria Mullova studied at the Central Music School of Moscow and at the Moscow Conservatoire. Her extraordinary virtuosity captured international attention when she won first prize at the 1980 Sibelius Competition in Helsinki and the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. She has appeared with most of the world's greatest orchestras and conductors, and at the major international festivals. Viktoria Mullova plays the "Jules Falk" Stradivarius (1723) and explores the full potential of her instrument with a hugely diverse repertoire - from "authentic" interpretations of Baroque and classical composers to 'new classical' interpretations of pop and jazz. With a group of like-minded musicians she formed the Mullova Chamber Ensemble, which first toured in July 1994 in Italy. In July 1995 they toured Germany and the Netherlands, exhibiting a blend of scholarship and virtuosity appreciated by audience and critics alike. Their first CD of the Bach violin concertos on Philips Classics has further demonstrated their ability to breathe life into music new and old.

    Wednesday, February 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Tony Monaco has been playing music since he was eight years old. When he was twelve, He was given a Jimmy Smith album and instantly knew that Jazz Organ was his calling. Tony began to play in Jazz night clubs around Columbus, Ohio while he was still learning the art of the Hammond B3 organ. He was influenced by hometown Organists such as Hank Marr and Don Patterson. Tony's newfound fascination led him to jazz organ legends Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Here He found an unlimited source of inspiration; he just couldn't get enough! On Tony's sixteenth birthday, he received a return phone call from Jimmy Smith. This was a great honor and really boosted his enthusiasm as an organist. Jimmy Smith continued to give Tony Jazz Organ secrets over the phone while Tony was playing around Columbus. When he was twenty, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to come play with him at his club in Woodland Hills L.A., California.

    All about Bows
Original Article by The CD String School © 1998 - Please use all info. ® ver 0.60 Introduction France England Germany INTRODUCTION A good bow is often considered as important as the violin itself. Students should not overlook the importance of possessing a reasonable bow. The best bows are without question French. They are sought after for their exceptional qualities which secure a fine, rich and rounded sound. They are followed in quality by English bows, though early English bows compare well with French bows. English bows are more sturdy and stable, lying half way between French and German bows in style and framework. German bows come last, and are very popular in their mass produced and affordable quantities. Remarkably, no other country has a tradition or school of bow making. As with English bows, some of the earlier makers produced their best bows. Oistrakh, though very fond of French bows ( he would buy a whole bunch every visit to Paris ) played with one of the original German Nurnbergers. In early times, it was common practice for violin makers and shops to stamp the bows supplied by others. PRE-HISTORY back to top A Transitional bow was used in Mannheim for the compositions of Tartini, Haydn and Mozart. F.Tourte & The Dodds made them. Wilhelm Cramer ( 1745-99 ), a Mannheim violinist went to London in 1772. The type of bow he used is called "The Cramer bow". Tartini was also involved in improving bows, around 1730, using lighter wood and using a straighter stick ( as opposed to a convex curve ) He also established the octagonal form of the bow at the heel. . The Cramer bow was also quite straight, but Tourte Pere used a decidedly concave stick as used nowadays. From an illustration in Leopold Mozart's Violinschule, it can be seen that convex bows were still being used in Germany for some time after these improvements.
