Ms. Hall-Tompkins is currently seeking conductors or orchestras who may be interested in engaging her to perform the work. Any interested parties are requested to contact her through this website. Thank you.
Clarence Cameron White, 1880-1960, was one of the country's outstanding composers and violinists of the first half of the twentieth century, with performances to his credit at the principal concert halls in the United States and Europe. His concert tours as a violinist received critical acclaim, and he was rated highly among concertizing artists of his period. Mr. White studied at the Oberlin Conservatory and in Europe. In addition to activities as violinist and teacher in Boston (1912-23) and New York City, he was director of music at West Virginia State College (1924-30) and at Hampton Institute (1932-35). His compositions for the violin include Bandanna Sketches and arrangements of spirituals, and he also wrote an opera Ouanga (1932), based on Haitian history. Born in Clarksville, Tenn., Clarence Cameron White spent his childhood in Oberlin, Ohio, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Washington, D.C. He began studying the violin at the age of eight and wrote his first composition for violin and piano at age fourteen. After graduating from Howard University, White entered the Oberlin Conservatory in 1896 and graduated in 1901. He continued his studies and performed in Boston, New Haven, and New York where he drew the attention of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Harry T. Burleigh, and Booker T. Washington. In 1903 he was invited to join the Washington [D.C.] Conservatory, and he also later taught in public schools there. In the following year he met African-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor with whom he studied in London in 1906 and again in 1908-11. After performing throughout Europe he established a studio in Boston where he conducted the Victoria Concert Orchestra from 1914 until 1924.

Johannes Brahms Violin Concerto in D, op. 77 Brahms, like his predecessor Beethoven, wrote only one violin concerto, also in the key of D major. Described once by the distinguished Viennese musician Joseph Hellmesberger, as ³Beethoven¹s heir², Brahms himself declared that ³To follow in Beethoven¹s footsteps transcends one¹s strength.² Although it is indeed safe to say that Brahms¹ concerto would not have existed without Beethoven¹s example, the story of its influences is far more intricate. The name of Eduard Reményi invariably surfaces during a discussion of Brahms¹ violin concerto. A part-German, part-Hungarian violinist who was once soloist to Queen Victoria, Reményi rescued a young Brahms from piano-playing in taverns by engaging him as his accompanist on a tour throughout Germany in 1853. Although their partnership was brief, the collaboration proved significant: Brahms was introduced to the Hungarian and gypsy folk music that Reményi played so well, eventually leading to a whole category of

About Us Our Season Tickets Past Artists ... Home Past Artists Established in 1892 as the Tuesday Morning Musical Club, Tuesday Musical's first concerts were held in local homes and the Fontenelle Hotel ballroom. After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha. Front Page Festival Review World News The 1999-2000 Tour Biography Acclaim Links Calendar Paganini Spring 2000 Tour Review reprinted with permission Many violinists are merely content to run through today's standard recital format of one sonata after another, rarely bothering to try anything that might disrupt the routine. San Francisco's Joseph Gold, however, chooses to go his own way, playing technically challenging music with a Romantic bent, often centered around a unifying theme. A former student of Jascha Heifetz (you can hear the Heifetz influence in his incisive attacks), Gold has been offering his fresh alternative to the same old thing in major cities like Vienna, Barcelona and Florence on his just-completed European tour. On one Saturday evening, with a young, hugely gifted, Northern Italian pianist Marco Cadario as his partner, Gold put together a program centered around the music of the Italian violin sorcerer Niccolo Paganini. In doing so, Gold and Cadario had to contend with the extremely long reverberation time of the Chiesa Parrocchiele Sangiano, which could easily turn a rapid string of detached notes into blurred tonal hash. Yet with crisply executed attacks and releases, the pair minimized the problems posed by the church's tricky acoustics (Gold and Cadario repeated this program a week later in Florence's Cherubini Conservatory, where the acoustics were friendlier). Sailed through sandtraps Opening with Paganini's "Duetto Amoroso," a lyrical dialogue between male and female lovers (both impersonated by the violin), Gold's interpretation has clearly deepened, emphasizing the difference between the two voices without giving way to excess sentiment. A sonata by the Baroque-period composer Locatelli seemed to look forward about a century in time - and it pushes even further ahead with its ragtime-like syncopations in the second movement. With its recitative-like passages and full-blown arias, Spohr's Violin Concerto No. 8 (transcribed for violin and piano) is actually an operatic scene in all but name - and Gold recognized this by carefully maintaining a sustained singing line while easily sailing through the technical sandtraps that Spohr placed in his path.

As musical director of a four-week music festival in Austria last month, he invited the other two members of the family string ensemble 18-year-old son Raphael and wife Debbie Dare to join him on the program of internationally resound music talent. . . "It was politics, essentially, that got me the gig," Joseph said chuckling at the fortuitous coincidence that brought him to Schloss Matzen. Just as Joseph was beginning his portion of the concert and lecture event at Lobkowitz Palace in Vienna earlier this year, a non-violent political demonstration broke out. "And he wasn't just playing in any room of the Palace. It was the Eroica room with Beethoven premiered his third Symphony," clarified Debbie, noting the historical significance of the setting. "After (the demonstration) ended, I said to everyone: 'you've seen political fireworks now you'll hear musical fireworks' in my horrendous German," Joseph recalled.

Released under the auspices of the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music (founded 1990), which intends to issue fifty discs devoted to diverse, musical genres and idioms of Jewish expression, this album debuts a series of pieces by Joseph Achron (1886-1943). Prior to this release, I knew Achron only by a few, small pieces championed by Jascha Heifetz, in which Achron acted as piano accompanist. Having been raised in St. Petersburg, Achron came under the spell of the Gesellschaft (the Society for Jewish Folk-Music), which inculcated his abiding interests in folklore, religious hymnody, cantorial inflection, as well as in fusing a polyphonic and harmonically eclectic blend of elements from Scriabin and the Second Viennese School.

But the violinist's unique poetry, personalizing each of the diverse works, carries the recital. This sensitivity, rarer now perhaps than in past generations, should ingratiate her with audiences. And this first collection deserves morethoughtful attention than that almost automatically accorded to the megahyped debuts of hothoused prodigies. Highly recommended. Robert Maxham

Bates People in the News LEWISTON, Maine - Pianist Jon Nakamatsu, the only American since 1981 to win the gold medal in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, opens the Bates College Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, Russell Street. Admission to the concert is $7 for the general public and $5 for children, senior citizens and full-time students of all ages.
A popular and critical favorite described by one reviewer as a "poet of the keyboard," Nakamatsu performs works by Joseph Woelfl, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, Debussy and Liszt in his Bates program.
A California native and former high school German teacher, Nakamatsu became the 10th Van Cliburn gold medalist in 1997. A Los Angeles Times reviewer later wrote that "Nakamatsu has everything he ought to have: a solid, effortless and comprehensive technique, wide dynamics and a spectrum of tone colors, exquisite good taste, a commanding musical authority, a searching interest in different styles and a poet's imagination."
Nakamatsu records for the prestigious harmonia mundi usa [EDITORS: lower case for "harmonia mundi usa" is correct] label. He is equally comfortable in solo recital, chamber ensembles and as an orchestral soloist, and his repertoire runs from Bach through Beethoven to such contemporary composers as Lukas Foss. He performed Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at the Clinton White House, and has appeared with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester-Berlin, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco and Cincinnati symphony orchestras and the Boston Pops, among other major organizations.
