World Environment Day 99 World Environment Day 99 was a tremendous success, far exceeding our hopes and dreams. The theme for this year's World Environment Day ( Our Earth - Our Future - Just Save It! ) was an urgent appeal to each and every one of us to renew our pledge to cherish and respect the planet that sustains us. The events began with a welcome party hosted by new Laureate, Global Environmental Action of Japan. Their key role as an advocator of environmental protection and sustainable development in close collaboration with U.N. organizations as been an important force in deepening international dialogue and developing concrete global actions which would contribute to sustainable development. The Prince and Princess of Japan graced their conference, which ran simultaneously with World Environment Day. On June 4th, Mr. Goto of Yasuda Marine and Fire Insurance Company (a 1998 Laureate) funded and hosted a Global 500 Forum Luncheon and presentation. The Minister of the Environment, Mr. Manabe, Dr. Toepher, Executive Director of UNEP, new Laureates, and numerous Japanese Laureates attended the event from 1987 - 1998. It was a joyful reunion for Marilyn Mosley and Global 500 Forum Advisor Partha Sarathay, who has served continuously on the Forum as a counselor for India, President, and advisor. Mr. Goto and his 110 person technical team worked with Forum President Marilyn Mosley to develop a presentation that included a dramatic display of our website. The World Environment Day Ceremony attended by Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, was a very memorable occasion. The beauty of Japanese simplicity was evident with an exquisite slide presentation arranged to music of incredible natural beauty. The event culminated with the presentation of UNEP's Global 500 awards to 17 individuals and organizations from 12 countries, all of who have made outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment. We were all so proud of the Laureates as each stepped up to receive the award presented by Mr. Manabe and Mr. Toepher. The youth representative from Japan Junior Eco-Club, Ms. Mizuki Kunugihara, stood with much poise and delivered a lovely speech. The Laureates were honored to meet with their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, who received the Laureates in private.

MOSAIC TO BALYS DVARIONAS (1904-1972):
PIANIST, COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR

Everything in the biography of this man is reminiscent of a mosaic. It became a part of Balys, a sort of 'second nature', and not infrequently, something rather mysterious. A natural and distinctive part of his environment was the mosaic of languages: Lithuanian, Russian, German and Yiddish. It was the same for music, which was also like another language, and which included everything from popular tunes to Johann Sebastian. Thus the image of a mosaic would probably be applicable to the portrait of many members of this family - professionally, psychologically, representing their meandering lifestyles, and not infrequently their incomprehensible secrets and improvisations.
Following his studies in Liepaja with Latvian composer and organist Alfred Kalnins, in 1920 Balys Dvarionas went to Leipzig where he studied piano at the local conservatory (1920-4), attended lectures at the university, and went to concerts and theatre performances. Apparently Dvarionas wasn't very satisfied with the principles of piano technique as taught by Robert Teichmüller at the conservatory, and one can see from letters written to his sister, that it was only later, when studying with Egon Petri (one of the most celebrated pianists of the last century) in Berlin (1925-6), that he learned to play with the minimum of physical effort. On the other hand, perhaps Teichmüller also had some effect in the formation of his interpretational and stylistic comprehension? For, to the very last years of Dvarionas' life, his piano playing was a joy to listen to.

Aural Fixations
From Alice Cooper to Grant Cooper, upcoming musical schedules offer something for everyone in
By Allen Czelusniak
The large number of arts organizations in Central New York give music fans plenty of options when it comes to penciling entertainment into their schedules. Whether it's the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's Russian Festival, the Vegas-style fare in the Turning Stone Casino's Showroom, American music legend Bob Dylan, a lunchtime classical recital of Civic Morning Musicals, or a catered cabaret with the Central New York Jazz Foundation, the choices are there in the 2001-2002 season.
As always, check the weekly Times Table section in the The New Times for updated listings and upcoming concerts as they are announced. The information is also available on the Web at http://newtimes.rway.com

Sound Tracking
The new season offers a medley of options for every musical taste
By Eric Rezsnyak, Nathan Dinsdale and Jamie Bellavance
Although the fall and winter lack the numerous festivals and outdoor concert series that populated the Central New York summer, the new season offers plenty of events to fill the void. If anything, the cooler-weather musical menagerie is even more diverse. Instead of week after week of party bands, jam bands and, well, more party bands, Central New Yorkers seeking aural refreshment can tune into the fine classical selections, cool jazz, sprightly folk encounters and more. Or catch one of the nationally touring rock or r'n'b acts at one of many regional venues.
This list represents a highlight of some of the more prominent concerts for the 2002-2003 season. For updates, check the weekly Times Table section in The New Times , or check out our Web site at http://newtimes.rway.com
Arts Alive in Liverpool
Liverpool is home to two fall music series, the Arts Alive program from the Friends of the Liverpool Library and the Liverpool is the Place Year 'Round series. Both take place Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Carman Community Room at the Liverpool Public Library, 310 Tulip St., Liverpool, and are free. For more information, call 457-0310. Kohl's Trio.

P RNU, ESTONIA. Unofficially, the winner of the competition attending Neeme Järvi’s Summer Academy July 5-17 in Parnu, Estonia was Leo McFall of the U.K., a student entering his second year at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Officially, there were five winners, all of whom conducted on an all-Dvorak finalists concert July 16 at Pärnu Concert Hall. The workshop/master course has been held since 2000 in conjunction with Parma’s annual David Oistrakh Festival, a three-week culture feast for visitors to Estonia’s Baltic Sea resort. The finalists were James Lowe (U.K.), associate conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Alexander Mayer (Germany), winner of the 2003 Tokyo International Conducting Competition, McFall, Bohuslav Rattay (Czech Republic), a graduate student of Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute in the U.S.A. and Kiyotaka Teraoka (Japan), resident conductor of the Osaka Symphony. The winner’s distinction, a chance to conduct with Järvi on the final Oistrakh Festival concert July 17 at Pärnu Concert Hall, was withheld, apparently more for collegiality than merit. "When there is ‘competition,’ you feel you have to compete," said Järvi, who made the decision. "It should be more like family." (Time may have been a factor, too, with McFall only able to conduct the dress rehearsal of his work, Smetana’s "Moldau.")

NON PHIXION The Future is Now (Landspeed) cd
Seems like Non Phixion have been around forever, but 'The Future Is Now' is actually their debut full length, after a handful of 12"s and a brief stint on Matador. Another posse of white boys who have managed to sidestep the Vanilla Ice/Eminem/3rd Bass white-boy-rap stigma (like El-P and the Anticon Collective) by taking classic hip hop and twisting into something new and fresh. But unlike the freaked out, hyper experimental hip hop of Anticon/Def Jux, Non Phixion stay way more true to the old school, with looped strings, simple, straight ahead beats, and hands-in-the-air, catchy sing-along choruses, and tough guy/gangsta lyrics from the three frontmen, Ill Bill, Sabac Red, and Goretex who still manage to imbue their lyrics with vitriol and humor, their unique voices and different flows meshing really well together. Pretty good stuff.

Positive Power of Principled Profit

A Brahms Intermezzo Jeffery Dane shares insights in the life of Johannes Brahms, who "accomplished more in a single year than most others do in their own lifetimes." He was responsible for some of the greatest musical pieces ever written, yet was a modest man. He refused to sail in a ship or pay taxes on his tobacco (he was once caught attempting to smuggle some through customs). A fascinating character! by Jeffrey Dane
© Jeffrey Dane 2001 When asked to fill out a biographical form, one modest man wrote, "Happily impossible, I would have to paint nothing but zeros and dashes in these columns. I have had no experiences that I could communicate. I have attended no schools or institutions for musical culture. I have embarked on no travels for purposes of study. I have received no instruction from eminent masters. I am the incumbent of no public offices, and I hold no official positions. Well, then, what am I to write here?" - Johannes Brahms. Another quote attributed to him is a near-perfect illustration of the stoicism and self-confidence that stood him in such good stead throughout his life - and is something from which many of us could learn and benefit even now. It also seems to encapsulate in a mere seventy words an idea that's occurred to most of us, and it proves that some of the nonsense we see in contemporary society today is not a modern phenomenon, but an eternal verity prevalent even in Brahms' day. "Those who enjoy their own emotionally bad health and who habitually fill their own minds with the rank poisons of suspicion, jealousy and hatred, as a rule take umbrage at those who refuse to do likewise, and they find a perverted relief in trying to denigrate them. A pity. In so doing, such unfortunates are deceiving no self-thinking person, for they reveal much about themselves and little about their targets."

The concert hall, with its excellent acoustics and wood-paneled walls, is central to concert programming at the Y. The hall is small enough to feel intimate and large enough to produce a rich, warm sound that has charmed artists and audiences alike. Hanna Arie-Gaifman calls the concert hall "a gift," and the Y's concert programming, with its focus on chamber music and classical guitar, capitalizes on its particular assets.
