However, a ticket to any of these would cost you more, and you can go again and again and again

Fast forward the years ten through thirteen, through ever-enlarging violins and bows, through lessons in the Bach Unaccompanied, Dies Irae as well its code, Vitalli Chaconne , Beethoven’s Romanza , the Bach Unaccompanied, Bach Double Concerto (Cerf as my double) and maybe forty of the canon, successfully taught…until I reached…you guessed it: Ysa¿e. I couldn’t. I had plateaued and soon Raymond Cerf had an Idea. I would go with him to the Meadowmount School of Music in the Adirondack’s—run by the world’s greatest violin teacher at the time, Ivan Galamian. Legendary. And why should he let me in with the world’s greatest young talent? I will never know. But Cerf arranged it. Both of us would study from Galamian. And so it came to pass that I took a few trains and joined Cerf in Elizabethtown. And was astonished. Master lessons, a note taker in the window seat (always, for every student); twenty sets of young ears peeled to the curtained French doors as Colombian discovery, Jaime Laredo, played Ysa¿e, tenderly, passionately, Galamian once shouting the rhythm; ten of the happy few standing on a little hill playing the Bach Double (no pianist as the double), as if a single giant fiddle were trying to ascend alone its calls to God; waking to hear Leonard Rose practicing solo cello before breakfast; Galamian at night, speaking Russian, patrolling the grounds with the boxers Mischa and B©b©, on the hunt for fornicators (sex and violinism were antigonic, he insisted…to no one’s appreciation); Turkish A¯la Anderand (who knew how old?) dressed by her mother in flouncy dresses, blond hair in pigtails, her cheeks so over-rouged she looked like a clown—her mother’s invention to make her

Discussions of Bach’s Non-Vocal Works - No. 5 Concerto in D minor for two violins BWV 1043 Francis Browne wrote (June 9, 2002):
The Concerto in D minor for two violins, the next work scheduled for discussion, is one of the most famous and popular of all Bach's music. The slow movement is invariably included on any compilation of 'The Best of Bach', 'Essential Bach', 'Romantic Bach', 'Bach Adagios' etc and it often represents Bach on more general compilations of classical music.
And rightly so. The music is supremely, hauntingly beautiful; and its popularity means there is a wide range of recordings available, often by artists not usually associated with Baroque music. The J.S. Bach Home Page has a list of recordings at:
    http://www.jsbach.org/1043.html

On the Naxos Website you can hear performances by Kojla Blacher and Lisa Stewart with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra (8.554603) and by the sixteen year old Yehudi Menuhin recorded in 1932 with George Enescu and Pierre Monteux (8.110965). The index numbers and 'Search our catalogue' are the easiest way to reach the recordings.
It would be interesting to have comments and reactions the work and on as wide a range of recordings as possible.

    Nathan Milstein
    by Loke Hoe-Yeong
Nathan Milstein (1903 - 1992) was called the "prince of the violin" (and at one time, the "prince of the bow"). Harold Schonberg, in his obituary of Milstein published in The New York Times , wrote his famous line, "He could well have been the most nearly perfect violinist of his time". However, the name Milstein is rarely mentioned or known among the music-listening public. Which is a sad thing considering the esteem and admiration professional violinists and musicians alike then and now hold for him. But this problem can be easily explained; Milstein was a not "commercial" musician who could "sell". Rather, he was repelled by the demands of celebrity and never indulged much in publicity. The little-known fact is that Milstein's career is the longest ever in the history of violin playing - 72 years, from his official debut playing the Glazunov concerto with the composer conducting(!) in 1915, to his final concert in 1987 playing the Beethoven concerto with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. Some time after his final concert, the violinist broke his arm, bring his career to an abrupt halt. A pity, considering that the healthy musician's career could have been ever longer!
