The ballet world lost the great Alicia Markova, who danced with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes before founding the English National Ballet. Two leading classical music figures died prematurely: Robert Harth, the energetic director of Carnegie Hall, and St. Louis Symphony conductor Hans Vonk, who had been stricken with a rare neurological disorder. A renowned jazz trumpeter and former band leader at the famed Blue Note Club in New York City, Mr. Moffett dedicates two weeks of his life each year to provide guidance to the musically aspiring. International FAME Festival concert series, featuring faculty and student concerts at the Lawrenceville School July 25-Aug. 7. "I get letters all year from the week at camp," says Mr. Moffett, who lives in West Orange. "They write me with problems: 'I'm playing in the jazz band, I'm taking this solo and I think the key is B flat. I play this note and I think it's a blues structure — what should I do?' So, I write back, 'Well, think rhythmically.' It's gratifying when you feel like you're making a contribution and really helping." Piper joined our class from Cincinnati Country Day, proudly following his father, a member of the Class of 1927. As an undergraduate, he majored in history and was a member of Colonial Club. Following graduation, he attended Harvard Business School, which led to the real estate investment side of Citibank, and later he became V.P. of Citicorp in Manhattan. The class extends its sympathy to his wife, Lynn, and his two daughters, Lindsey and Alexandra. To them we extend our sincere sympathy. The Class of 1970 Larry, of Napa, Calif., who entered Princeton after graduating from Shaker Heights [Ohio] HS, died Sept. 27, 2002, from a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Although he had enough advanced placement credits to graduate in three years, he loved Princeton so much that he decided to stay an extra year. He spent his senior year mostly doing research. He was in the Woodrow Wilson School and belonged to Terrace Club. He received his JD from the U. of Michigan, and practiced law in the Cleveland area for 25 years with the law firm Malitz and Barker. He also started a merchant banking firm, Gray Industries. His friends at Princeton always remember Larry as someone upon whom they could rely when they needed help. His business and law practice clients felt the same way. Larry moved to Napa in 1988, when he retired from his law practice but continued his work in merchant banking. He bonded closely to the community in Napa and co-authored a book, Napa Valley, about the people of the area and their environmental and community activities.

Erick Friedman was the Conductor and Music Director of the Garrett Lakes Summer Festival Orchestra in Maryland and was a regular guest artist and conductor at many worldwide music festivals including Northwest Chamber Orchestra in Seattle, Round Top Music Festival in Texas, the Newport Music Festival, and the Yale Norfolk Festival in the United States. In November, 2000, he received the Ignace J. Paderewski Award for Distinguished Contributions to Society and Culture. Mr. Friedman served as professor of Music at Yale University since 1989. Prior to that, he held teaching positions at Southern Methodist University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and the Manhattan School of Music. His long-time friend and Yale colleague, violist Jesse Levine, said that "Erick’s playing was characterized by the most elegant phrasing, borne on a sound of rare beauty and purity, coupled with extraordinary technique. A child prodigy, Friedman studied at the Juilliard School of Music and made his New York debut when he was only 14. Three years later, he trained under Jascha Heifetz and played at Carnegie Hall. In 1960, Friedman signed a contract with RCA that allowed him to play with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony and London Symphony. He became a regular guest musician and conductor at music festivals all over the world, and led the Garrett Lakes Summer Festival Orchestra in Maryland for more than a decade. When an automobile accident injured his left arm and hand in the late 1980s, Friedman became a professor of violin and chamber music at Yale University . He continued teaching there until his death. Friedman was the recipient of the 2000 Ignace J. Paderewski Award for Distinguished Contributions to Society and Culture. THE VIOLIN-PLAYING OF ERICK FRIEDMAN a technical analysis by Stephen Redrobe I write this as a technical analysis rather than as an essay in musical criticism mainly for the benefit of violinists and students of the violin. In reading the vast majority of published reviews of violin concerts and recordings, it often becomes immediately apparent that the writer is quite musically knowledgeable but has little understanding of the art of the sheer mechanics of violin playing. It can be most perplexing to see, for example , spiccato confused with sautillé, martélé with staccato, or saltato with ricochet. As the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said "Whereof one knows nothing; thereof one should remain silent". I shall do my best to keep this in mind. Background As a student Mr Friedman was fortunate enough to have been the beneficiary of the finest training in the history of violin playing. Most violin aficionados willl be familiar with the Russian, Franco-Belgian and German "schools" of violin playing.. Mr Friedman studied in an environment which gave him the very best of all these "schools" yet he never studied in any of these countries. To best under stand this we have to go back to the early years of the twentieth century.
