"The number of violinists who play the instrument as sonorously as Erick Friedman belong on the Fingers of One Hand Club, meaning you do not have to count very high to run out of members... He is not only a master violinist but also one with a distinctly personal and identifiable style of playing." (Masters of the Violin Series Concert, Carnegie Hall)
Donald Henahan, The New York Times, 1979
"The virtuosity was staggering... the kind of programme that only he, of today's virtuosos, can really carry off"
The Strad Magazine, 1998 Erick Friedman, the renowned American virtuoso violinist, has had a truly outstanding career as a performer. He made his New York debut at the age of fourteen, and at seventeen began studying with Jascha Heifetz, wth whom he recorded Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. Currently a full Professor of Music at Yale University, Mr. Friedman is still an active performer, conductor, and recording artist. An excerpt from his latest release, "The Romantic Violin," can be heard by clicking on the violin scroll at the top left of this page.

The following article was featured in the January 1990 issue of The Strad , to whom we are grateful for full reprint rights. (PAGE 1 OF 6) If in 1957 Erick Friedman had taken the advice of his early mentor and first manager, Arthur Judson, and passed up the opportunity to study with Jascha Heifetz, his career might have followed a very different course. 'He was very much opposed because he knew that Heifetz would insist that I stop giving concerts and at that time I was playing about eighty concerts a year. Judson - with some validity, I might add - felt that a career could not be stopped and restarted successfully.'

What Is Concerto?
The 20th century brought many diverse changes to classical music, with developments in electronics, percussion, and orchestration, not to mention the demise of the tonal system in the work of many composers. An acceptance of folk musicnotably jazz, ethnic, and popled to extremely varied and creative movements, and these in turn cross-pollinated with innovative avant-garde techniques. Electronic manipulation, minimalist movements, complex rhythms and atonalities, and postmodern techniques all have contributed to, and continue to further, experimentations in the modern world of classical music. Notable Artists: Igor Stravinsky Karlheinz Stockhausen Claude Debussy

The Republican Oakland, MD April 1, 2004 Erick Friedman, Famed Violinist, Co-Founder Of GLAF, Dies Of Cancer
Erick Friedman, hailed by international critics as one of the world's finest violinists, died Tuesday morning of lung cancer. The musician was 64.
Friedman and Kathryn Sincell-Corwell, another founder of GLAF, initiated the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival's Classical Music Series in August of '87. For several years, the series involved solo and chamber presentations over one weekend, followed by orchestra productions the next weekend.
The series attracted musicians from New York City, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, and Washington, who spent up to two weeks in Garrett County, staying with families and experiencing life in a rural area. The festival quickly became a favorite event for most visiting musicians, who applied to return year after year.
Numerous local families took the musicians into their homes for the duration of the music festivals, and lifelong friendships were established. Volunteers cooked meals for the musicians as well.
In addition to conducting the orchestra, Friedman gave master classes and private lessons during his stays in Garrett County.

VIOLINIST, PIANIST END FESTIVAL'S CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES WITH STYLE
Sun Sentinel
; Fort Lauderdale; Apr 28, 1986 By: Tim Smith The Palm Beach Festival's delightful chamber music series ended in high style Saturday evening at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse with a dynamic recital by veteran violinist Erick Friedman and piano prodigy Dimitris Sgouros. The Greek pianist, who has been actively concertizing and recording since he was 13, possesses more than an assured technique. He has genuine flair and not a little interpretive depth that places him on a much higher level than the typical gifted youth. Now 16, Sgouros seems to understand fully the difference between playing notes and making music. That understanding served him extremely well in Liszt's B minor Sonata. I must confess a limited tolerance for this work, which usually sounds to my ears like the musical equivalent of an old windbag. But Sgouros managed to lessen the sonata's seemingly interminable length by means of his striking technique, vividly etched phrasing and potent ability to produce the necessary array of tone colors. It was an animated, penetrating performance. He was no less impressive in his role as accompanist for Friedman, especially in the bold and brilliant D minor Sonata for violin and piano by Saint-Saens. Sgouros was not content to be a second banana; he tackled the piano part with such gusto that there were times when Friedman hardly a shrinking violet was all but drowned out.
