March 2004
Arnhold Concert Highlights Quartet's Spirit of Exploration By ED KLORMAN
Around 10 o'clock on a Thurday morning, the Chiara String Quartet—currently in its first year as Juilliard's graduate quartet-in-residence—begins another busy day of rehearsing. As they unpack their instruments, cellist Gregory Beaver, a former computer science major, tells the others about some recent updates he has made to the quartet's Web site. "Did you see the color coding?" he asks, eagerly. The Chiara String Quartet members are (clockwise from upper left) violist Jonah Sirota, violinist Julie Yoon, cellist Gregory Beaver, and violinist Rebecca Fischer. (Photo by Peter Schaaf) After warming up on two Bach chorales, the group gets to work on the variations movement from Schumann's A-Major Quartet, Op. 41, No. 3. Their playing exudes an energy and sense of purpose that belies the morning rehearsal time. As the quartet stops to rehearse a few spots, it is obvious how compatible the members are. When violist Jonah Sirota suggests that they vary their approaches to cadences, violinist Rebecca Fischer immediately chimes in with several specific examples. Without a moment to spare, the quartet is playing again, putting these new ideas into practice. The Chiara String Quartet dates back to 1993, when Beaver and Fischer met as students at the Musicorda Summer String Program on the Mount Holyoke College campus in South Hadley, Mass. Beaver says, "I still remember the first reading together. We read the first movement of Schubert's 'Death and the Maiden.' I had been looking for a group that could play the piece for about two years. Our first read-through had a real, electric, musical connection."

The olden days Before we hit the professional stage, the history of our time as a quartet is one of intense music-making packed into small chunks of time. In the summer of 1993, Rebecca and Gregory were placed in a quartet through absolute chance at the Musicorda Summer String Program , on the campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Massachusetts. Rebecca, Gregory, violinist Rachel Noyes and violist Danielle Farina, had never met. After the audition at the beginning of the summer, we were placed together in a quartet by the faculty. Our story began in the basement laundry room of the dormitory, the only place cool enough to concentrate. We began with Schubert's Death and the Maiden string quartet. From the first rehearsal, the intensity of our connection as people and musicians was unlike anything we had ever experienced. We performed the first movement on July 18, 1993. At the end of that summer, we parted our ways to the far corners of the United States. In January, it became clear to all of us that we would spend the next summer together again, and we decided to return to Musicorda, and that we would learn Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130 and Bartok's Quartet No. 1, and try to coach with Norman Fischer of the Concord String Quartet. However, when we arrived, Mr. Fischer let us know a bit about the difficulty of the Beethoven, and we realized that in the 6 week program, we would have only 3 days to learn each movement! Instead, we undertook Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 59 No. 2 in E minor, and performed it both at Musicorda, and at a concert off-campus for which we would need a name. At first, a few possibilities were tossed around such as "Terpsichore," and quickly tossed out. Gregory found "Chiara" in a small music dictionary that said its meaning was "light, pure," and we finally had found our name.

Strings Faculty Young Artist Seminar: Strings Faculty Festival Quartet-in-Residence The Chiara is well known both as an interpreter of the established quartet repertoire, and as a champion of great new pieces from today's most interesting composers. Upcoming world premieres include 2003 Rome Prize-winner Jefferson Friedman's String Quartet No. 3 (commissioned by the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music) and G. Schirmer composer Gabriela Lena Frank's new piano quintet, Ghosts in the Dream Machine, written for the Chiara Quartet and pianist Simone Dinnerstein (co-commissioned by Astral Artistic Services). The quartet will also inaugurate New Voice Singles in the fall of 2004 with a series of CDs each containing a world premiere recording of a new work, starting with Robert Sirota?s Triptych, a powerful 9/11 tribute. The Chiara Quartet's commitment to building new audiences for chamber music goes far beyond the confines of the concert hall. The members of the quartet help to introduce diverse audiences to the power of quartet music through performance in schools and communities. They have given masterclasses at Cincinnati College-Conservatory, Rice University, Musicorda, and the University of Notre Dame. In addition, they mentor the next generation of gifted musicians through their teaching at Juilliard, Greenwood, Chamber Music at Snowmass, and at their new summer festival, Red River Chamber Music in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is in that community that the quartet started its career as recipient of a 2000-2002 Chamber Music America Rural Residency. Chiara [key-ARE-uh] is an Italian word, meaning clear, pure, or light.
