Nirvana via Classical Music: Julia Fischer's Take on Perfection
By Hans Manzke Published: Thursday, November 13, 2003 At its best, music can take you somewhere you wish you could be. Regardless of whether that's in your past, present or future, each note has the intrinsic ability to pick you up from where you are and put you down somewhere else. As a form of expression it exists alone. It can be coercive, enchanting, exhilarating, brilliant, enlightening, simplifying, self-deprecating, sublime, cathartic. Good music is medicine, best taken anytime, anywhere.
Those who attended Sunday afternoon's performance in the CFA concert hall saw a violinist firmly ensconced in the hallowed halls of bonafide prodigy. Julia Fischer performed with the New York Philharmonic in 2003, with Chicago Symphony and Carnegie Hall debuts already under her belt. On Sunday, Fischer whisked her way on stage with an air of confidence and aware affability belying her 20 years of age. Selections from Prokofiev and Mozart were handled with the utmost care and respect, both performed with flawless technique and startling panache. Playing entirely from memory, Fischer displayed fine mobility and dazzling range. She is supremely comfortable with her instrument, allowing her sound to fill the hall.

Fischer on Beethoven
By Eddie Silva
I caught up with Julia Fischer after she had grabbed a quick breakfast in Charleston, South Carolina on her tour with the Dresden Philharmonic. Fischer is clearly a star on the rise with a season that includes a Carnegie Hall recital and guest-artist visits with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and other excellent ensembles in the United States and Europe. The Munich-born violinist speaks impeccable English with an English/German accent, and talks with the confidence you would expect of a 21-year-old veteran of the orchestral world. How is the tour going? Very well, actually. It’s the longest tour I’ve ever done in my life: 13 concerts in 15 days. We’ve done nine so far, so four concerts are left. It’s going very well. I know the orchestra very well; I’ve played with them since I was 15 or 16. We’re having a great time here. You’ve been playing Sibelius with Dresden. Sibelius and Brahms. And then you have a small break, and then you’re here to play the Beethoven. How do you do that shift from working with an orchestra that you know very well and that you’ve been touring with and playing Sibelius and Brahms, to an orchestra you haven’t worked with before and shifting to Beethoven.

this is one of the moments that rarely happen to me throughout a year: I've listened to Julia Fischer's interpretation of JS Bach's (very much loved) Partita #2, and was simply knocked down. Completely. For a very long time, it hadn't happened to me to have tears in my eyes - just because of the sheer beauty of somebody's playing. Today, that period has come to an end. (Adrian: This is the return of the hunger...)
Just comparing it to two other similar aged (and positioned) female performers that I like:
Hillary Hahn shocks you with her fabulous technique. She runs you through some of the very difficult parts with ease, that you forget to breathe sometimes (so does she, it seems). But... chances are that you are left cold - especially with the more emotional parts.

Lisa Batiashvili Violin The Georgian-born violinist Lisa Batiashvili has already made an indelible impression on the international music scene, with stunning successes throughout Europe, North America and the Pacific Rim territories. Ms. Batiashvili sprang to international attention with her unprecedented success in the 1995 Sibelius Competition (Helsinki) where she won the second-prize as the youngest competitor aged 16. Since then an exceptional career has blossomed, alongside studies with Ana Chumachenko at the Musikhochschule in Munich and with Mark Lubotski at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg. As well as being much in demand as a chamber musician, her performance schedule is characterized by invitations from the leading orchestras and conductors including Bayerischer Rundfunk Orchestra with Lorin Maazel, the Czech Philharmonic with Ashkenazy, the Philharmonia with Dohnanyi, and the Concertgebouw with McGegan, Christoph Eschenbach and the Chicago Symphony Ms. Batiashvili is a graduate of the BBC's 'New Generation Artists' scheme, in conjunction with which she made a debut recital CD for EMI - recording of music by Brahms, Schubert and Bach - which instantly won the highest critical acclaim, and was selected as one of the best CDs of 2001 by BBC Music Magazine.

Get to Know Julia Fischer on Super Audio CD and DVD-Video
Julia Fischer is truly a future Super Star of the classical music recording industry. In her debut solo album at the tender age of 21, she provided a performance that artists with 20 years more experience would struggle to match. Now, in order to provide classical music lovers with more of an insight of this virtuoso violinist her record company, Pentatone Music, has produced a sumptuous Super Audio CD two disc box set with a bonus DVD-Video featuring the artist and her music.

(Prices subject to change) Reviews: join discussion Reviews: 2 Review by ramesh May 4, 2005 (14 of 17 found this review helpful) Performance: Sonics (S):
I have not encountered a better recorded violin than on the current Fischer set; it has an ideal blend of direct string sound, and that emanating from the soundbox proper. Mellow and satisfying in every parameter, and a magnificent achievement on the part of the Pentatone engineers, even if I was listening only in stereo. Congratulations! I fear some reviewers may whinge it is slightly overresonant, but this may be due more to their inadequate reproducing equipment. These pieces were recorded in a church. I have heard these Bach works performed in a similar venue, and the urbane but detailed and fulsome sound here is a faithful replica. Even if this were only assessed on sound quality, I would recommend these works, if only as a sonic benchmark.
Fischer's liner notes make the exhaustive point that though she may be 21, she has played Bach almost daily from the age of nine, has intensively studied them for six years, including with Menuhin. What she astonishingly says nothing about are the reasons she has elected to perform these works the way she does, and whether baroque violin performance has influenced the lighter and unmonumental way she has chosen to render the Old Testament of the violin. Frankly, Pentatone need to reissue the liner notes and DVD with this needed explanation, especially when the DVD is a trivial 11 minutes long and shows more of the woman's coffee drinking ( elegant hand movements, no slurping nor lipstick marks on the china ) technique than it does her bowing. Her website, juliafischer.com , has the standard photo gallery and performance schedules, but makes no mention as to her interpretative choices.

So why not try to get some of the "big names" on board, that are being droped one after the other by the majors. Some of them have started releasing on their own labels after having been droped. Couldn't they also record for "Pentatone" ? The artists would get the best sound they ever had and the label would get names seeked by large numbers of listeners. I agree, but what killed the major labels was that they became all about the big name artists. I don't want to see the label become about 'so and so conducting orchestra x.'
