The Eastern Music Festival makes its 44th annual summer appearance June 25 with an increasingly diverse menu of 80 concerts and music-related events, including a new "fringe" series at Triad Stage.
"We are trying to create five weeks where there is so much that appeals to so many different kinds of music lovers," says Tom Philion, EMF president and CEO.
Contributed to Go Triad Julia Fischer
Mozart and classical music remain in the picture: Acclaimed pianist Peter Serkin will make his first EMF appearance, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24.
EMF's new music adviser, internationally known conductor Gerard Schwarz, has invited renowned violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg to make her EMF debut.
Young German violinist Julia Fischer also will return.

NAXOS IN SEATTLE, L.A., DALLAS AND MORE From “Naxos: American Classics” by Christopher DeLaurenti
The Stranger (Seattle), Thursday, June 30 th No other record label has done more for American classical music in recent years than Naxos
. . . . I'm quite enamored with its "American Classics" series, especially the latest disc, Schuman: Symphonies Nos. 4 and 9 . . . . Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony navigate the tempestuous moods of these symphonies - harrying brass stabs, ennobling declarations by the strings, woodwinds frolicking in counterpoint, and mournful interludes - superbly. Additionally, I recommend Naxos's cycle of Bruckner symphonies conducted by the late Georg Tintner as well as their Penderecki series , whose first volume contains riveting performances of the legendary Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and the unjustly neglected Fluorescences.

KDHX Music Review - Music of Beethoven and Schubert
St. Louis Symphony
Reviewed by Gary Scott
Back to the index The music of Beethoven exerts a power over the human psyche that is almost inestimable. Witness the jump in ticket sales whenever any major symphony orchestra performs his music. Beethoven wields a healing, purgative effect that restores and inspires our spirits. His appeal cuts across all lines of class, race and gender. Perhaps no single work expresses the genius of Beethoven more fully than the Violin Concerto . Although it was his only concerto for the violin, Beethoven did not exploit the form for a technical display; rather, he chose to demonstrate the profound lyricism of the instrument and the power of original yet simple, unadorned melodies. The St. Louis Symphony presented the young German violinist Julia fischer this weekend as soloist in the concerto, with guest conductor Emmanuel Krivine at the podium. The two created an effective team. Fischer plays with an intensity and dedication almost reminiscent of Midori, her slightly older colleague and fellow prodigy. Such a soloist must be supported by an attentive, involved conductor, which Krivine certainly was. There seemed never to be any sense of disunity between soloist and orchestra; all worked together to produce a cohesive, organic whole. Following an enthusiastic ovation, Julia Fischer was gracious and kind enough to offer the audience two encores, the Fuge in G Minor by Bach and the Paganini Caprice in B Minor

Conservatory Violinist Receives Prestigious Instrument
By Joanna Chang RELATED STORY: Daniel Austrich: At Home in Oberlin Deutsche Musik Instrumenten Fonds Competition
Austrich, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and
a resident of Hamburg, Germany, since 1997, now studies at Oberlin with Alla Aranovskaya , first violinist of the St. Petersburg Quartet
On the day Austrich won the competition, he performed in concert with other winners at the Hamburg Museum of Art. Deutschland Radio and two major German television stations, ZDS and NDR, recorded the concert.
A musician qualifies to enter the competition only after winning first prize at any international competition (in Daniel's case, first prize at the Jeunesses Musicales competition in Germany in August 2001). Those honored with the use of instruments from the foundation can keep them longer by winning the competition again in subsequent years. Julia Fischer and Viviane Hagner are among the violinists playing instruments from the foundation.
On April 14 and 15, Austrich will perform solo recitals with pianist Alexander Mekinulov in New York and Washington, D.C., respectively. In July 2002, he will perform in the Davos Music Festival Young Artist Series in Switzerland, and in 2003, he will perform Lalo's

Press Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the USA - concerts on November 7th and 8th in New York
The New York Times, November 9, 2004 The Power of Intensity of a Brahms Connection The Dresden Philharmonic can rightly claim a connection to Brahms, who conducted it several times. So Lincoln Center chose wisely in inviting the orchestra to participate in its autumn exploration of Brahms, "The Classical Romantic."
The orchestra's Brahms concert on Sunday afternoon at Avery Fisher Hall, the first of two, offered the Violin Concerto, with the 21-years-old German Violinist Julia Fischer as soloist, and the Symphony No. 1 in C minor, both under the direction of its principal conductor, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. Yet for sure, current sensibilities and the distinctive perspective of the conductor determined the character of the performances as much as any vestige of the Brahms heritage. At 71, Mr. Frühbeck de Burgos, born in Spain to a Spanish mother and a German father, is enjoying more international renown than ever. It's probably too easy to say that his approach to music combines Latin and Germanic qualities, sometimes effectively, sometimes less so, but that was my impressions here. Overall the performance of the First Symphony had an organic sweep and an inexorable drive. The Dresden Philharmonic favors thicktextured, weighty, dark-hued sonorities, qualities certainly suited to some aspects of the music. Yet for all the relentless energy, the playing lacked precision and incisiveness. Did the free and easy approach to rhythmic articulation represent the laid-back Spanish side of Mr. Frühbeck de Burgos's music-making?

Seen and Heard Concert Review
Debussy, Bartok, Rimsky-Korsakov: Julia Fischer (violin), London Symphony Orchestra, Emmanuel Krivine, Barbican, 24 April 2005 (MB)
Exotic reveries may have been one of the themes of this concert, but another was orchestral colour. From Scheherazade , this was a concert which not only brought solo contributions of outstanding clarity in all works but also defined a measure of how exceptional the London Symphony Orchestra can be at its best.
was not always subtle in its detail (surprising given that the conductor, Emmanuel Krivine, has spent a large part of his career with French orchestras), although there were outstanding solo contributions from the woodwind principals. More interesting was the performance of Scheherazade , a work much more difficult to bring off in concert than its popularity perhaps suggests. Apart from being able to unify the worlds of sound and feeling, a great conductor of

"A striking debut sees a young violinist doing full justice to a work she loves… The freshness of her way with the Khachaturian is immediately striking in the chattering figuration of the opening, and she brings a rare tenderness to the lyrical second subject. The clarity of Fischer’s performance in the finale brings lightness and sparkle. A unique coupling, superbly recorded.” Gramophone magazine SACD, but playable on ordinary CD players.
