by William Thomas Walker Works on the July 26 program of the Eastern Chamber Players made use of both woodwinds and strings, resulting in a satisfying evening of congenial music-making. Samuel Barber's Summer Music , Op. 31, for woodwinds, was composed in the spirit of 18th- century serenades intended for outdoor performance. There is an impressionist quality to the score and a wonderful melodic line for the oboe. The ensemble consisted of flutist Brian Gordon, oboist Eric Olson, clarinetist Shannon Scott, bassoonist Cedric Coleman, and Kevin Reid, horn. The performance was well balanced and bubbled over with a sense of fun. The Garden of Adonis , Op. 245, by Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000), featured Les Roettges, flute, and Anna Kate Mackle, harp. Extra-musical drama and atmosphere were added by bathing the stage in rose-colored lighting. Both players were bare-footed, and Roettges placed his music on the stage floor while he sat cross-legged on a large pillow. Hovhaness drew on Armenian religious sources and used a darkly-modal style that can be static and repetitive. Several of the six short movements featured the pentatonic scale and lovely, shimmering harp arpeggios. Schubert's "Trout" Quintet is not a neglected work – its tunes fit the listener like a favorite sweater. Eastern Philharmonic principals - violist Barbara Hamilton, cellist Neal Cary, and bassist Leonid Finkelshteyn – joined guest violinist Julia Fischer and faculty pianist Gideon Rubin for one of the most satisfying performances I have heard to date. The tempos seemed just right. Rubin balanced the dynamics of his piano so he never covered the other players' musical lines. The blending of string sound was gorgeous. Finkelshteyn's bass produced the darkest low notes I can recall hearing in this work. This musical "comfort food" lacked nothing in technical precision.

Dresden Philharmonic in Charlotte: Musical Comfort Food
by William Thomas Walker Music lovers and critics who attend a lot of concerts hear the basic repertory numerous times. Routine performances take their toll, so an "all war-horse" program had better bring special insights and qualities. From several perspectives, the touring Dresden Philharmonic, which appeared in the marvelous acoustics of Belk Theater on November 14 as part of the Carolinas Concert Association's 75th anniversary season, did just that. To a Triangle concert attendee of a certain age, the CCA is like the old Friends of the College series, but the venue, which is definitely not Less well known than the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Dresden Philharmonic traces its formation back to the opening of the first concert hall in Dresden, on November 29, 1870. Marking the 1885 transition from concerts for the aristocracy to concerts for the general public, the then "Gewerbehausorchestra" gave full seasons of symphonic programs and took its current name in 1915. Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorák, and Richard Strauss conducted and often premiered their works with the orchestra. The orchestra's all-Brahms program for Charlotte was thus historically fitting. BSO Performance Spotlights Dazzling Violinist
Published: Tuesday, March 16, 2004 Julia Fischer
The Grammy Award-winning Baltimore Symphony Orchestra returns to Dekelboum Concert Hall on March 30 at 8 pm., under the direction of BSO Associate Conductor Lara Webber.
The ensemble will perform an all-Beethoven program, including the beloved "Symphony No. 5" and the "Violin Concerto in D Major," featuring young talent Julia Fischer, whose playing has been praised for her dazzling technique and "a big burnished sound...of such purity that it brings tears to the eyes" (San Francisco Chronicle).
German-born phenom Fischer has, at the tender age of 19, already performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and the New York Philharmonic, and has given recitals at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and London's Wigmore Hall.
She has also toured with the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of Lorin Maazel and with the Academy of St. Martin in the Field, under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner.

Vol. 5, No. 68
The succession of exceptional young violinists continues, seemingly without end.
The child-wonder prodigies like Midori, Hillary Hahn, and Maxim Vengerov have hardly grown up than teenagers like Julia Fischer take up the challenge and make superb music for the new decade.
Fischer, 19, lit up all of Davies Hall with her lustrous interpretation of Sibelius' Violin Concerto March 13 under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. The attractive Bavarian musician with the hour-glass waist launched into the distant pianissimos of the opening with a silky, serene tone. Then she astonished me with a powerful bow arm, particularly in the sinewy finale, reflecting a vigor at the other end of the sonic spectrum. And her intonation, double stops and other technical matters were thoroughly mastered.
She brought the audience to applause after every movement- an amazing response that I had never encountered in this hall, now over two decades in age.

The second release from the prodigiously gifted German violinist Julia Fischer. Her debut disc reaped warm praise - 'The debut disc of the German violinist, Julia Fischer, this is seriously impressive' - '...an ambitious and auspicious recording, leaving us to impatiently await the next one.' Julia Fischer was born in Munich, Germany in 1983, and now ranks among the top violinists performing for audiences around the globe. She began playing the violin before the age of four, receiving her first lesson from Helge Thelen. Her formal violin education commenced at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, under the tutelage of Lydia Dubrowskaya. At the age of nine, she was admitted to the Munich Academy of Music, where she worked with Ana Chumachenco. Julia Fischer has won many competitions, the most prestigious of which include the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition under Yehudi Menuhin’s supervision (where she won both the first prize and the special prize for best performance of a solo work by Bach in 1995); and the Eighth Eurovision Competition for Young Instrumentalists in 1996. In 1997, she was awarded the 'Prix d'Espoir' by the Foundation of European Industry. Her active repertoire ranges from Bach to Penderecki, from Vivaldi to Shostakovitch, and includes over 40 works with orchestra as well as some 60 chamber-music works. Julia Fischer currently performs on the Stradivarius 1716 violin 'Booth', which is on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
