Bibliography The Romanian composer George Enescu is one of the neglected giants of modern music. Prodigiously gifted, he became best known in America as a conductor (where he was considered as a successor to Toscanini in New York) and in Europe as one of the greatest violinists of the century. But he was first and foremost a composer ; and, tragically, his mature works - works of extraordinary emotional depth and intricate beauty - remain virtually unknown outside Romania. George Enescu was said by Pablo Casals to be "the most amazing musician since Mozart" , a statement which in many respects was true. He achieved international renown as a composer violinist pianist conductor and teacher and he displayed genius in each of these disciplines. He possessed a phenomenal memory and knew the entire repertoire of classical and romantic music by heart, in addition to many works of the twentieth century, with which one of his generations might well have been though unsympathetic. Apart from these superlative gifts, Enescu was a man of humility; he was a profound teacher (counting Yehudi Menuhin and Dinu Lipatti amongst his pupils) who impressed every musician who met him. He was born in 19 August 1881 in Liveni, Romania. So gifted was he that, aged only seven, he entered the Vienna Conservatoire as an accomplished violinist, determined to be a composer. Enescu never forgot his home, set amidst Carpathian peaks, and graduated with distinction from Conservatoire before his 11th birthday. He had played on the first desk of an orchestra under Brahms in the latter's C minor Symphony and accompanying Brahms in his First Piano Concerto. Brahms was a lifelong hero, as was Wagner (indicating Enescu's broad sympathies) who became, as he sad

July 9, 2003 George Enescu: Gentle Giant
By Martin Anderson “Enescu was the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart.” Thus said Pablo Casals, no mean musician himself. Stokowski agreed: “I have known very many great musicians, and very few geniuses. Enescu was a genius.” Yehudi Menuhin, Enescu’s student from 1927, confessed, “Every time I play music, I still feel the presence of that most inspiring man, the greatest musician I’ve ever known.” Siegfried Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta George Enescu: His Life and Music , which I brought out in 1990, is still the only book written in English on this great figure.) Romanian Rhapsodies The Symphonie concertante He produced a generous quantity of chamber music: two each of cello sonatas, piano quartets, and string quartets; a piano quintet; an elliptical Chamber Symphony for twelve instruments; and three violin sonatas. There would have been three piano sonatas, too: No. 2 was complete in his head, but he never got around to writing it down, and so we have only the First and Third. There are three piano suites, though, the first two on Baroque models, the third

(in French)
Enesco, Georges (real name, George Enescu), famous Romanian violinist, conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Liveni-Virnav, Aug. 19, 1881; d. Paris, May 4, 1955.
Although Enesco severed relations with his Communist homeland, the Romanian government paid homage to him for his varied accomplishments. His native village, a street in Bucharest, and the State Philharmonic of Bucharest were named in his honor. Periodical Enesco festivals and international performing competitions were established in Bucharest in 1958. Enesco had an extraordinary range of musical interests. His compositions include artistic stylizations of Romanian folk strains; while his style was neo-Romantic, he made occasional use of experimental devices, such as quarter tones in his opera, "Oedipe." He possessed a fabulous memory and was able to perform innumerable works without scores. He not only distinguished himself as a violinist and conductor, but he was also a fine pianist and a gifted teacher.

His musical memory was phenomenal, a fact that contributed to the loss of some of his own works which he composed but never wrote down.”
