    Ron Aspery
    - Saxophonist and keyboard player in the 1970's fusion trio Back Door, considered one of the most original jazz groups ever to have formed in Britain, known for its odd instrumentation, use of improvisation and surprise, and unusual repertoire, who released four albums for Warner Brothers during four years, and toured the United States and Europe, sharing billing with some of the biggest rock bands of the day, died Dec. 10 after a stroke at age 57.
    Renata Babak
    - Internationally known opera singer with one of the world's great mezzo-soprano voices, who defected from the Bolshoi Opera in 1973 in Milan, Italy, then immigrated to Canada and went into hiding for two years before re-emerging to a standing room only crowd at Carnegie Hall in 1975, and who spoke out against Soviet repression for the rest of her life, died Dec. 31 of pancreatic cancer at her home in Silver Springs, MD at age 69.
    Etta Moten Barnett
    - Trailblazing African-American actress who rose to prominence in the 1930's with the films "Gold Diggers of 1933" and "Flying Down to Rio", the latter where she portrayed a Brazilian entertainer, complete with fruit on top of her head, singing the Oscar-nominated dance-song "The Carioca", but who became more respected for her work in the fields of black causes and international relations after her retirement from show business, died Jan. 2 of pancreatic cancer in Chicago at age 102.

Theatres of Eternal Music Say the word drone and, depending on your conversation partner, any number of possible responses might emerge: an entomologist's exegesis on the male honeybee's mating practices, the military expert's account of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, perhaps a musicologist's analysis of the drone-like features of the bagpipe, bluegrass banjo, and didgeridoo. Within electronic music circles, the word might elicit historical anecdotes populated by dramatis personae like La Monte Young and Terry Riley, plus nostalgic recollections colored by strobe-lit chanters and tambura players. Far from being an esoteric phenomenon of the ‘60s, recent works by Greg Davis, Deathprod, Robert Henke, Minit, and Growing suggest that the drone is still very much alive and, if anything, thriving. While there appears to be a resurgence of interest, it's also possible we're merely witnessing new additions to a genre that has never really gone out of fashion. What constitutes a drone? To begin, sustained intonation that establishes a harmonic center for its accompanying elements; the drone might utilize a single note repeated indefinitely or, at the opposite extreme, all of the scale's notes spread across numerous octaves. Other key aspects include extended duration, modular repetition, and a focus on overtones. Influenced by the music of India, Indonesia, and Africa, the drone form's oft-used alternate tuning (Just Intonation) and vertical concentration challenges the tacit supremacy of a Western tradition that prioritizes horizontal development.

    By MIYUKI KONDO, Contributing Writer
THE MACHINIST Opens Saturday * 102 minutes * Cine Quinto in Tokyo Forget the South Beach diet, and don't bother with Dr. Atkins. If you really want to lose weight, go talk to Christian Bale. The 31-year-old actor, who wasn't exactly out of shape to begin with, shed a whopping 30 kilos for his starring role in the psychological thriller ``The Machinist.'' But the compliments Bale's getting have nothing to do with his overly sleek physique. It's his dedication to his craft that people like director Brad Anderson admire. Eyes hollow and cheeks sunken, Bale is little more than skin and bones on screen. He's the picture of ill health, which is just what Anderson wanted. ``The character was described in the screenplay as a `walking skeleton,''' Anderson said at a recent Tokyo news conference. ``But I didn't expect him to lose that much weight. I think he didn't expect it, either. But he's an actor who needs to push himself to the limit to get the best performance, and he did it in this film.'' Bale plays Trevor, a factory worker who hasn't slept in a year. As if being an insomniac wasn't bad enough, he's also lost his appetite, which is why he's wasting away. His emaciated appearance is meant to get viewers thinking.
