Most musical instruments live in constant anxiety. It is rumored that a piano-tuner once reported that whenever his notoriously finicky Steinways resisted tempering he had only to whisper the name of Vladimir Horowitz to have all the strings simultaneously quiver into tune, and I myself have seen a mature, sturdy Bösendorfer tremble at the approach of Lazar Berman. Left: Paganini's "Canone" Not so the stringed instruments. The recently deceased novelist Mario Puzo might have celebrated the misdeeds of the Corleones in his Godfather novels, but in terms of capacity for intrigue the Corleone family have been amateurs in comparison to the string family. Anton Chekhov, a great music-lover, was among the first to recognize that when a princess and a musician have to be brought together in a comic romance, one should leave the necessary ruses up to a member of this family (hence the enduring charm of Romance With a Double Bass ). Stringed instruments have hatched plots that have lasted centuries: by about 1650, for instance, they decided to transform the small Italian village of Cremona into a factory for their own manufacture. The sweet-toned instruments made by Niccolò Amati (1596-1684), the bright, beautifully-balanced sound of those fashioned by Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737), and the character and tonal variety of those of Bartolomeo Guarneri (1698-1744), have never been equalled by those made anywhere else.

Young musicians pay a heavy price to perform on top violins
CHICAGO-The rich and well-connected have gathered in the plush, sunken living room of former Motorola CEO Robert Galvin and his wife, Mary, for an unusual soiree. In a northwest suburban mansion adorned with oil paintings by Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, a dozen or so listeners sip champagne and whisper to one another as a 25-year-old violinist plays a mini-recital. Unlike most audiences, however, these listeners have paid nothing to hear the violin phenom, while the violinist himself has paid thousands for the privilege of giving the performance. The young man, whose fiery playing quickly establishes his credentials as an emerging virtuoso, paid for round-trip airfare from his home in New York, accommodations in Chicago and other costs. This-as well as additional fees totaling thousands of dollars a year-is the price of borrowing a great violin from The [unnamed society], which the Chicago violin dealership [unnamed Chicago violin dealer] established in 1987. Though conceived as a way to help young artists use multimillion-dollar fiddles, the society also attests to the skewed economics and extreme imbalance of power in today's rare violin trade, with wealthy investors and dealers firmly in control of the world's greatest instruments and rising young musicians beholden to them.

Weis Center Presents Cerovsek and Jumppanen in Concert
Feb. 9, 2004
"We are particularly happy to welcome Paavali Jumppanen back for his third visit to Lewisburg and the Weis Center," said Bill Boswell, director of cultural events at Bucknell. "He first performed here as winner of the Janet Weis Award and the PA Presenters Prize at the 2000 Young Concert Artists International Competition in New York City. He so awed our audience that he returned a year later by popular demand," Boswell added. "Cerovsek, another outstanding young musician, and Paavali Jumppanen are presenting three concerts featuring all nine of the sonatas during this season at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston later this year," he said. Violinist Corey Cerovsek won the grand prize in the Canadian Music Competition at the age of nine and graduated at age 12 from the University of Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music with a gold medal for the highest marks in strings. In recital, he has performed throughout the United States and Canada, appearing regularly at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Italy's Spoleto Festival. Other recital credits include the Place des Artes in Montreal and Wigmore Hall in London as well as concert tours to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Japan, China, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain.

Corey Gouker's Machine Inside the Mind
thoughts of the convoluted Sunday, 25 January 2004 While working on a new design, how about improving your Google rank too. Okay so at first I wanted to become #1 for Galan Bridgman on Google. I've given that up, I'm not even on the first page now. I was #5 which wasn't bad considering I only mentioned his name twice before. I've got a new goal now. I want to be #1 for Corey , just Corey. I've got at least the first 3 results for Gouker and the first page for Corey Gouker (big surprise there) but I'm still only #10 for Corey. I was #34 then 23, 21, then 13, now #10. Only just noticed this week, I do only check this every two weeks or so, I'm not really that obsessed over it and because my Google toolbar doesn't seem to like me right now it's not displaying PageRank at all. It was a couple weeks ago, I did notice a PageRank of 6 when I looked. Anyway, I've got a couple people to surpass before I can claim I'm #1 for Corey on Google. I've got Corey Harris a blues musician at #1, he's actually quite good.

Pickin’ and Grinin’ By JUSTIN KERN Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, Scott Pearson regularly listened to bluegrass music and learned how to play flatpick guitar and mandolin with his parents. Pearson now lives in Warren, Pennsylvania, and his matured musical talents brought him first place in last year’s Mayville Bluegrass Festival flatpicking contest. “My parents play and enjoy bluegrass and when we were growing up, there was a concert or festival going on every other weekend. There aren’t really any other bluegrass contests like this in the area, not with the quality of prizes and the growing size of the festival like in Mayville,” Pearson said. The Mayville-Chautauqua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Community Music Project are planning to kick off the Third Annual Mayville Bluegrass Festival with an even larger mix of unique music, family-geared fun and bluegrass contests and workshops than in the previous years, according to festival organizer Bill Ward. “Ellicottville has jazz, Fredonia has the Red, White and Blue Festival, and we were looking for a genre-specific festival that is family-friendly. And because we’re aimed at mainly bluegrass music and it being family-friendly, the response from the fans has been tremendous. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to predict this year’s crowd to be in the tens of thousands,” Ward said.

We will be asking you to be ready to make a commitment by Nov. 13, so that we can have the program in effect beginning Dec. 1 and running through May. If you are interested in MTU Works but cannot attend the meeting, there are bus schedules available for you to look at in the Public Relations office (MC 228), and Loretta Waughtal can answer your questions about the program.
Pre-Law night
All students with an interest in attending law school are invited to Pre-Law Night from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wed. Nov. 11 in the FAC Hospitality Suite. Tom Knothe, an ’86 Viterbo alumnus and a La Crosse lawyer will be present to share his insights and career experiences. Please forward any questions to Wayne Wojciechowski, x3085 or Sally Emerson, x3072.
Connect cookie cutter sale
The Connect Program Christmas cookie cutter sale is under way. Students will be selling the cutters from noon to 5 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 19 in MC lobby. Cost of one cutter and recipe card is $1; three designs are available. A set would make a great holiday gift.
