... Huskiana Team Players Music matters in the twenty-first century. By Judith Tick Musicians with a Mission: Keeping the Classical Tradition Alive by Andrew L. Pincus (Northeastern University Press; Boston; 2002; 288 pages; $28.95) Conductor Robert Spano, music director at both the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is followed as he works to remake American symphonic programming. Wisely, to make his great musicians more human, the author offers caffeine-like jolts of insider gossip, critical dissent, and smart shoptalk. For example, that it took a year for Yo-Yo Ma to learn the Nashville fiddling style for his CD Appalachia Waltz. Or that Juilliard Quartet rehearsals occasionally turned into shouting matches, in which music stands were thrown instead of punches. Such tempering pronouncements aside, optimism generally prevails in the book. Pincus has made it his mission to put some of the pieces back together again by celebrating the achievements of exceptional citizen-artists. In turn, a citizen-journalist has contributed greatly to public discourse on the role culture plays in a democracy. Judith Tick is a Matthews Distinguished University Professor in the Music department.

Instead, the program will feature songs borne out of violent conflict but with themes of peace. Along with American folk tunes and spirituals, the duo will play Duo for Violin and Cello by Erwin Schulhoff, a talented composer who perished in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, and "Praise to the Eternity of Jesus," from Olivier Messiaen's

There are supposed to be support RBS files available, however the Keyboard magazine website wont be updated until tomorrow. They even used the graphics I made up for the meter charts! :: Meanwhile, back at the goat ranch....I took the new edit of e-priori, blah...blah...blah... you can still tell it was created on ReBirth, but the mix is a bit cleaner so you can hear each element more distinctly. . The poster for the seminar showed an Escher print, and mentioned Bach's music.
It all sounded too good to be true. I had just read Nagel & Newman's thrilling "Gödel's Proof," I admired Escher's art, and as a music major specializing in piano I was deeply drawn to Bach's music. I was particularly interested in canons and fugues compositions in which several interwoven melody lines all expound on a single theme.
Doug was interested in all these things, and having a grand old time weaving them together into a literary work that would become a classic. We found that we shared other passions writing names so they read upside down, carving a block of wood so it casts shadows of three different letters, writing canons and fugues . Soul mate!
A year later I helped Doug teach the next installment of his course. We began by acting out the story of the Musical Offering. In 1747 Bach visited King Frederich the Great of Prussia at his court in Potsdam. The king, an accomplished musician, played a long sinuous theme he had written.
In his time Bach was renowned as an improviser. The king asked Bach to improvise a 3-voice on the royal theme. Bach obliged. Then the king asked for a 6-voice fugue on the same theme. Bach declined he substituted a simpler theme of his own instead but several months later he sent the king a Musical Offering, which included the 3-voice fugue he had improvised, ten canons, a trio sonata, and a 6-voice fugue, all on the royal theme.
