Jerry Gerber, MIDI programming; Tim Day, flute; Karen Bentley, violin. http://www.slip.net/~jgerber/ Far from "Chaotic Offerings", Jerry Gerber’s "Kairotic Offerings" are well-organized essays in the wonders of digital technology allied to a traditional sense of the structure and function in large-scale harmonic contexts. Minimalist patterning, all-American syncopation, mysterious vocal samples, schooled counterpoint, clear motivic relations, a few clever backbeats, and rhapsodic, romantic downright cinematographic string lines conspire to present the portrait of a varied composer. With the exception of flutist Tim Day and violinist Karen Bentley in concerti for their respective instruments, all the orchestral sounds are MIDI-realized. Both the live performers play superbly, and Gerber writes virtuosic passages that allow them to display their talents to the fullest. Phillip George home news recordings compositions ... links

Description of Festival
To increase the artistic exchange between the North European and American new music communities, the Seattle Chamber Players presents a collaborative festival with noted musicians from countries that surround the Baltic Sea. As part of our concert season in a festival format (three concerts in three days), the ensemble will be giving programs of music by living composers from Baltic countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Artistic Advisor to the Seattle Chamber Players and curator of Icebreaker II is musicologist and music producer Dr. Elena Dubinets, who has co-organized several highly-acclaimed contemporary music festivals and conferences in different countries, including the Seattle Chamber Players Icebreaker: New Voices from Russia festival of contemporary Russian music in 2002. The project has two key components. First, the Seattle Chamber Players will perform music of contemporary composers from all nine countries of the Baltic Sea region; and second, the festival will involve an educational component: a musicological symposium on Baltic music of today. Each of the Baltic Sea countries will send its representatives to the festival. Leading musicologists from these countries will give one-hour presentations about the contemporary music scenes of their countries, and the composers will present their own music in additional one-hour seminars.

A legacy of music and musicians
For 40 years, PACO founder William Whitson has shared his love for chamber music with local youth and local audiences by Keith Kreitman Taking a rare break from a very busy musical schedule, William Whitson relaxes in the living room of the Palo Alto house he shares with Margaret, his wife of 23 years, and permits his mind to drift back to earlier days. He recalls how, after forming the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra as an all-ages outfit in 1959, he decided in 1966 to convert the group to one exclusively for high school musicians. He wanted to give them the opportunity to experience more of the classical repertoire than they might in school music programs. "There is much more than just the big orchestral stuff," he said. "There is also chamber music, from Haydn to Bartok and beyond, that did not require large orchestral groups. Just stop to think: The earliest composers wrote much more chamber music than larger musical forms. For example, Beethoven wrote nine symphonies but completed almost twice as many string quartets. "Young people were not getting close to all that was available musically. It's a process of education. It's not only learning string technique and solo playing."

Queen Kahina Comic
A Moroccan institute will be issuing a comic book about the legendary Jewish heroine Queen Kahina or Queen Dihya Tagllidt N Ayt Ufella, the Queen of heights, is well decided to protect her people against evil. Inspired from a historical Berber character, Queen Dihya, who had frightened 7th century Arab invaders into calling her "Kahina" (the witch), the young queen calls her friend the jinn for help as a terrible storm threatens her peaceful kingdom. What the green-eyed, red-haired heroine does not know is that the struggle she will be leading from her mountain will also help young Tifinagh (Amazigh script) learners the third alphabet in their school life.

Arts news Okay – there's no avoiding it. We're now well into our first full-day of the spring fundraiser and let's face it – there are only so many ways we can ask for money. Creativity gets chucked out the window during a fund drive – or does it? Certainly not for Ira Glass, host of This American Life heard Sunday nights at six. In fact, Ira somewhat famously pushes the creative envelope in his fundraising spots and he tells us he wouldn't have it any other way.

The Master Plan How to survive planning a wedding By Kandace Power Graves Trying to plan a wedding by oneself has been known to break the spirits of even the heartiest of love warriors, and the anxiety and tension can spark family rifts that take ages to repair. Many of today's bridal couples find it advantageous to seek professional help for some or all of the planning, allowing them to totally enjoy their special day. Complete wedding and events planners are happy to arrange the ceremony, guest accommodations, special parties and the wedding reception on request, relieving the bridal couple and both families of potential headaches. Their experience means they remember all the millions of details that people who do it only once (i.e. the bride and groom) might not even be aware are necessary. "A lot of brides really don't know what a professional wedding consultant can do to help them," says Anthony Lala Jr. (908-4804; www.anthonylalaconsultant.com

Cassette Ariel View, from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley is a new, superbly recorded selection of tone poems for violin and piano from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley. This CD creates the perfect enviroment for a moment of romance or quiet meditation. This project evolved out of spontaneous improvisations. We were both so inspired by the experiences that we were having as we played that we decided we had to share it with others. So we went into the studio for 2 weeks and came out with Ariel View. We hope you like it.

What is ArtMusic Coffeehouse?
An Interview with Don Slepian
By John Foxworthy When you think of the most marketable styles of today’s music what comes to mind? Rock, Pop and Rap rule the airwaves. But what overlooked genres are their unobvious sources? The electrified sounds of mainstream genres actually originate from acoustic music. Elvis became the King of Rock and Roll through Country and Western and Southern Blues. Toby Keith and Faith Hill brought the talents of Hank Williams Jr. and Waylon Jennings to the Pop scene. Queen took the tuxedos off of Classical and Opera and moved them into the domain of today’s Tech Metal. Yngwie Malmsteen and Randy Rhoads brought the techniques of classical violin and guitar to Heavy Metal and RUN DMC sampled classic and modern Rock tracks to create a trend that introduced new audiences to Rap. Like summer lightning coming out of a clear sky, these acoustic precedents seeded the clouds of contemporary creativity and now flash down to earth as today’s Rock, Pop, and Rap. One man with a rare and unusual talent of his own dedicates his time to spotlighting the little known stars of the acoustic set.
