Aspen - Some music festivals are summer venues for major orchestras, such as the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Mass., serving for decades as the home away from home for the esteemed Boston Symphony. But audiences will not hear a professional symphony at the Aspen Music Festival. It has always taken a different approach to orchestral offerings, choosing to emphasize education. The festival has five orchestras, all composed of students of varying ages and skill levels. Members of its music faculty lead most sections of the two most prominent ensembles, the Aspen Festival Orchestra and Aspen Chamber Symphony. These orchestras give the students invaluable experience, allowing them to train with top-level conductors, this summer including James Conlon, Neville Marriner and Leonard Slatkin, and be front and center in high-profile performances.

Joshua Bell plays the "Gibson ex Huberman" violin made by Antonio Stradivari in 1713. Its varnish gives it a reddish color something enjoyed by fans of Bell's work in the soundtrack to Francois Girard's 1998 film, "The Red Violin." The "ex Huberman" was stolen in 1936 from violinist Bronislaw Huberman, was recovered in 1987 and was subsequently acquired by Bell, whose earlier Stradivari was the 1732 "Tom Taylor." Joshua Bell on composition, hyperviolins, and the future
by David Templeton
Joshua Bell admits it: He's always loved technology. "Computers, video games, special effects," he says, "for me, it's all fun. I like playing around with new possibilities, so when it comes to technology and music —well, let's just say I have a pretty open mind." An open mind. Anyone attempting to unite the magic of modern technology with the glories of classical music would have to have an open mind, as the classical music world is notoriously suspicious of newfangled inventions and other "improvements." But if anyone can change the world, it's Bell. Legend has it that Bell, 34, received his first violin before the age of five, after his parents noticed his habit of stretching rubber bands over the handles of dresser drawers, plucking and strumming the self-designed "instruments" to make his own, brand-new kind of string music. That knack for tinkering is probably at the root of Bell's interest in modern technology, which has found a place in his current work with composer Tod Machover at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT, Bell is helping Machover—who the

With a violin in his hands at four years, a still youthful Mr Bell has today amassed numerous accolades for his appearances in both traditional concert halls – as soloist and chamber musician – and in the cinematic setting as body double and recording artist for the Grammy Award-winning film The Red Violin On a technical level, this recital could not be faulted. Bell and Mulligan shared a vision and an execution that depended on nothing less than perfection and mutual sensitivity. And yet there were definite strengths that defined the Grieg, the Ravel and the Sarasate as the musical highlights.

Brahms Violin Concerto in D, Op.77 (38 mins)

Dvo ák Symphony No.6 in D, Op.60 (41 mins)
Half time could not have arrived sooner, and what followed was second to none. Here was the Philharmonia we all know and love. Mackerras, with his finger on the pulse, conjured the Dvo ák to perfection. The playing was energetic, incisive and emotional. A fluidity of tempo rested naturally on the authentically inflected orchestral tongue. Violins stood a fraction ahead of the crowd and propelled forward the relentless momentum and passion.
Singing out bravely their heartfelt theme, the violins charmed the Adagio and set an example for the nostalgic return in the cello section. This movement was not without surprise however, and Mackerras directed daring trespasses into sinister territories and sinful blues dissonances. Nothing stopped the tightly knit Philharmonia from attacking head-on the challenges of Dvo

Stolen in 1919 and again in 1936, rediscovered a half-century later in a deathbed confession, auctioned in 1988 and, finally, sold to Bell for close to $4 million, the 1713 Gibson Stradivarius now goes everywhere with Bell He will tuck it under his chin this weekend at the Ordway Center , where he performs Haydn's First Violin Concerto and a suite of music from "The Red Violin." "I fell in love with it after playing it for a couple of seconds," Bell says of his Stradivarius. "It's funny because it's also a very red violin the most red violin I know." Critics around the world have hailed Bell , who turns 35 in December, as both a torchbearer for technical virtuosity and model for stylistic dexterity. He had already taken a first-hand glimpse of the Gibson Stradivarius when he recorded the soundtrack for "The Red Violin," a 1999 film that follows the path of a mystical violin as it travels through the centuries from owner to owner. Bell 's violin was created during Stradivarius' so-called "Golden Period" and named for one of its early owners, Alfred Gibson. It first came to
