It doesn't take long for Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell to pinpoint the main reason he's addicted to golfdespite taking up the game "too late," in his mid-20s. "Playing golf is like playing the violin," says Bell, whose latest work appears on the soundtrack for the new movie "Iris." Form is more important than strength. "Pressing harder on the strings of the violin won't make a louder, better sound. Playing effortlessly fills up a huge concert hall. Good golf is the same." The perfectionist's streak that has made Bell one of the world's premier violinists before his 35th birthday has also left him frustrated on the golf course. An 18-handicapper, Bell says his 200-days-a-year travel schedule keeps him from practicing enough to break 80, his ultimate goal. "I take my clubs with me on tour when I know I'm going to be able to play more than once," says Bell, who calls dew-sweeping rounds at Kapalua his favorite golf experience. "But I've had some of my best rounds using rental clubsso I've been telling myself that it's all in the equipment."

Joshua Bell
Artist: Joshua Bell
Styles: Modern Internationally known violinist Joshua Bell has performed with all the major orchestras and is proficient in the works of Beethoven, Lalo, Tchaikovsky and Wieniawski. He is known for both his contemporary and classical repertoire.
Joshua Bell was born in Indiana in 1967 and acquired an interest in playing the violin at an early age. By the age of 14 he had made his professional debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He studied under violinist Josef Gingold. After his debut performance his career took off. Although only a child when he first performed, his appearance was that of a serious, aspiring musician. In 1981 he won the Seventeen Magazine/ General Motors competition. From there he earned appearances with several orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philharmonic Orchestra of London and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has performed under such renowned conductors as Charles Dutoit, James Levine, Franz Welser-Most, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Herbert Blomstedt.
During the 90s Joshua Bell signed an exclusive contract with Sony Classical. He recorded the works of George Gershwin with composer John Williams. On the album Listen to the Storyteller, he performs a violin solo in a work by Wynton Marsalis. His concert work, Chaconne, was written for him by composer John Corgliano, who also composed the music for the film The Red Violin. Joshua Bell's musical interests lie both with classical composers and living composers. In 1993 he performed a violin concerto by British composer Nicholas Maw and more recently a work titled Air by American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Short Trip Home followed in 1999.

JOSHUA BELL: THE RESOUNDING CAREER OF A VIOLIN VIRTUOSO! With a U.S. recital tour underway, look for his February 8 release of "Romance of the Violin Dual Disc", which follows Billboard 's #1 Classical Album of the Year, "Romance of the Violin" Barbara Bales World-renowned, Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell seems to possess Midas' Touch. Unlike some prodigies, who burst onto the scene...then disappear, Joshua's career continues to flourish. The gifted, 37-year-old (whom People magazine once named one of the "50 Most Beautiful in the World") tours globally, to the tune of 100-plus concerts per year. He is also an outstanding athlete, a video game champ (admitting, "My video game playing has taken a back seat lately.") and a veritable pinball wizard. (Okay, so he's got perfect pitch and great hand-eye and small-and-large-motor coordination!) Moreover, the Indiana-born violinist is the first classical artist to have appeared in a VH-1 video and his life story has been made into a BBC documentary. On Classical Countdown , radio station WQXR-FM's annual program, listeners voted his recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto as Number 12 on their list of favorite works of classical music for 2004.

Violinist Joshua Bell comes to town
"Joshua Bell plays like a god!” cried John Corigliano into the TV cameras last year, clutching his first Oscar for Best Original Score. He was referring to the brilliant young violinist he had hired to breathe life into the score for the poetic independent film, The Red Violin. In fact, Bell inspired Corigliano so much that the composer wrote the first violin concerto of his career.
For Bell, the virtuoso who began his international solo career at age 14, working on Red Violin had some inspiring moments also. As artistic consultant, Bell helped the actors pantomime virtuoso performances of their own. Of course, there are some things you just have to leave up to the professionals. So when British actor Jason Flemyng had trouble pulling off a scene that called for close-up shots of him whipping his on-screen lover, Greta Scacchi, into a frenzy with his instrument, Bell ended up performing the close-ups himself, spending a day wrapped in a naked Scacchi. Nice work if you can get it.
Bell became a state tennis champion at 10 and a legend in the local video arcade where his initials topped the high score list on many a game. He would wave goodbye to his mom at the front door of music school and run right out the back door to the arcade to defend his title before class.

Joshua Bell, Violinist 8 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2006 Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell has been captivating audiences worldwide for over two decades. Known for his poetic musicality, Joshua came to national attention at age 14 with his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. A Carnegie Hall debut, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and a recording contract further confirmed his unique presence in the music world. Now in his thirties, Joshua has performed with the world’s leading symphony orchestras and conductors, recorded 28 albums and participated in events foreign to most classical artists, earning him the rare title of classical music superstar. Joshua was named by Billboard Magazine as the 2004 Classical Artist of the Year, and his CD, Romance of the Violin , the 2004 Classical Album of the Year. “Bell has evolved from a technical whiz to a true artist and intellectual whose music feeds both your brain and your heart,” said Newsweek Bell was a key fact in the success of the Academy Award®-winning score of The Red Violin, composed by John Corigliano, who proclaimed upon accepting the Oscar, “Joshua plays like a god!” Bell's recording of Nicholas Maw's Violin Concerto captured the Grammy for Best Solo Performance with Orchestra. Bell's performances and his magnetic presence have earned him popularity and acclaim that reach far beyond the concert hall.

Joshua Bell
Violinist Joshua Bell has chosen the 'timeless melody' as the theme for his latest Sony Classical recording, Romance of the Violin. Bell hand-picked his favorite melodies across a wide spectrum, featuring music from Monteverdi to Debussy, and even borrowing classics from the piano and vocal repertoire. All of the works are heard in new settings specially created by Craig Leon, master arranger and producer, who has worked in the pop world as well as with classical artists such as Luciano Pavarotti and countertenor Andreas Scholl. The new recording features the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, conducted by Michael Stern.
With Romance of the Violin, Joshua Bell explores new territory by reinventing the way we listen to familiar classics. His choices are personal and unconventional, as in his selection of Schumann's beloved piano miniature, Traumerei, or the opera arias of Puccini and Bellini. As befits an artist of such versatility, Bell makes himself at home in Chopin's Piano Nocturne in C sharp minor, performing it as if it had been originally conceived for violin, and shaping it with extraordinary nuances of color and rhythm.
A chamber music enthusiast, Bell initiated a chamber music series at London's Wigmore Hall and the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris. He enjoys regular chamber music collaborations with Yefim Bronfman, Pamela Frank, Steven Isserlis, Edgar Meyer, Olli Mustonen, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. A multifaceted musician, he has also teamed up with artists such as James Taylor, Chick Corea, and Bobby McFerrin. Joshua Bell has made his mark with a continuous stream of inventive musical projects and he continues to explore all sides of the musical spectrum in both concerts and recordings. He currently resides in New York City.

IN ALL-FRENCH PROGRAM CONDUCTED BY JAMES DEPREIST
Bell's 2002-03 performance season began with summer appearances at the Aspen, Verbier, Tanglewood, Saratoga and Blossom festivals, as well as the Pacific Music Festival in Japan and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. North American performances include a 13-city tour with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under his own direction, concerts with the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall, and the San Francisco Symphony. European highlights consist of performances at the Musikverein in Vienna with the Tonhalle Orchestra under David Zinman, a Scandinavian tour with the Stockholm Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, as well as concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome. Conductor DePreist opens the concert with Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" (The Memorial of Couperin), originally scored for piano. Composed during World War I, Ravel dedicated each movement of this work to the memory of a friend killed on the Western Front. Bell's remarkable gifts as an interpreter are contrasted in the haunting and lyrical "Poème" of Ernest Chausson with the dazzling virutosic fireworks of Ravel's "Tzigane". The second half of the concert features Debussy's "Nocturnes," which pays homage to the visual impressions and effects of light and shadow suggested by the title. "Nocturnes" will feature the women of Portland Symphonic Choir. The concert concludes with the perennial audience favorite, Ravel's "Bolero," which Ravel composed originally as a simple exploration of orchestral colors and timbres.
