Rachel Barton and Sibbi Bernhardsson to Perform Little-Known Works and Celebrated Masterpieces, Wednesday, March 1, 8 P.M., in Kulas Recital Hall Story by Claire Chase RELATED The Program Two former students of Almita and Roland Vamos - violinist Rachel Barton and Sibbi Berhardsson , visiting assistant instructor of violin - will perform their first-ever duo violin recital on Wednesday, March 1, 8 p.m., in Kulas Recital Hall. The program will feature a combination of little-known repertoire and celebrated masterpieces, including works for two violins by Schnittke, Ysaye, Telemann, Peter Jaffe, Mark O'Connor and Prokofiev. The performance is free and open to the public. "This program runs through the entire emotional spectrum, from light to heavy and intensely dramatic to comical," remarks Bernhardsson. "We will begin with Schnittke's Praeludium, which was written as a memory of Shostakovich, and has a very dark, funeral march undertone. This work can be played by either two violins or by one violin with tape. For this reason the piece has a somewhat mechanical aspect, but it's very engaging. Eugene Ysaye was most famous for his six solo violin works, and this duo sonata is like the solo sonatas in its contrasts ranging from impressionistic Ravel-esque textures to intensely romantic, thick emotional qualities. It's a beautiful piece, very typical Ysaye, full of lyricism.

Not water, fire. After smoking the cigars (using fire to light them, of course) the man figured he had an ingenious claim against the insurance company and filed for damages. If only every case could go so well. Unfortunately, the torch has been passed on to younger, fresher talent, in order to insure disorder in the court for years to come. The rookie of the year? Rachel Barton. - University of Chicago law professor Richard Epstein On Jan. 16, 1995, renowned violinist Rachel Barton boarded a Metra train to Winnetka, where she gave private lessons. An occasional rider of the train, Barton brought with her four separate items: a lunch bag; a purse; a book bag; and an Amati violin, aged over three centuries and worth around half a million dollars. - Juror Lisa Dixon Perhaps the jury got a lesson in courtroom etiquette from Barton herself: After the victory, the violinist promised court clerks and bailiffs a private concert. The offer has yet to be denied. Talk about taking sides.

Once we have made those decisions, there is no turning back. No second chance to rethink, to analyzes or to hope that the decisions we made was for the best. While you may think you have all the time in the world, in reality, time has already passed. Last week, I was reading a front page story in the Chicago Sun-Times that caught my attention. The story was about Rachel Barton, a violinist who was awarded a large sum of money ($29.6 million to be exact) from a Cook County jury for injuries she suffered while riding a Metra train in 1995. While I was a little surprise by the amount she received, the biggest detail left unanswered about this accident was why did it happen. I'm sure you know the whole story by now, so ut yourself in her place for a moment. You have four bags, a purse, a food bag, a book bag and a violin case, weighing maybe 70 plus pounds or so. You're in a hurry to get off the train so you head toward the nearest door. The doors open, you get off and you notice that one of your bags is caught on the vertical support bars so you turn around and you: A. Try to unhook the bag before the door closes and the train leaves. B. Say something like "Blah", leave the bag behind and go on your way. Or C, stop readjust the bag on your shoulder while looking back to see what the problem is and hesitate before you make your next move.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Wynne Delacoma, Chicago Sun-Times , May 26, 2000 Star power was on prominent display at Thursday night's Chicago Symphony Orchestra subscription concert in Symphony Center. Supertenor Placido Domingo was on hand for the program of Wagner, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, though as conductor rather than vocal soloist. And Rachel Barton was guest artist in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Last year the Chicago-born Barton was front page news for weeks while the court case stemming from her 1995 train accident in Winnetka went to trial. Happily, the evening's star power was exactly where it belonged, in service to the music. Now in her mid-20s, Barton played with the fearless confidence that has been her hallmark since she first caught the ear of Chicago music lovers as a grade schooler on the youth competition circuit. When her accident turned her into a local celebrity, many casual observers questioned her talent. Maybe, they thought, this tale of a tragically interrupted international career was simply hype. Hype it wasn't. Barton is the real thing, a prodigious talent with obvious personality and a clear-eyed vision of what she wants her performances to convey. The Mendelssohn concerto is a classical music warhorse, a lyrical and virtuoso extravaganza that audiences adore and soloists can play in their sleep. Neither Barton nor Domingo were sleep walking Thursday night.

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine's  new album, "Solo Baroque," was released in September by Cedille records.
NEW YORK - Violinist Rachel Barton Pine is on a quest to spread classical music. She goes on rock stations and plays heavy metal songs on her Stradivarius, then throws in a little Paganini. She has established a foundation to help disadvantaged youngsters buy instruments and travel to competitions. And her albums often highlight not-so-famous composers whose works are worth knowing. In 2000, she released a CD of charming concertos by black composers of the 18th and 19th centuries. A more recent album matched Brahms' Violin Concerto with one by Joseph Joachim, Brahms' close friend who is most remembered for his violin playing rather than his composing. Her new album, "Solo Baroque," released in September by Cedille Records, has two of the monumental pieces of the solo violin repertoire - Bach's Sonata No. 1 and Partita No. 2 - and provides unusual insight into works that have been heard countless times. The album also presents unaccompanied works by two of his predecessors, Johann Paul von Westhoff and Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, and a contemporary, Johan Georg Pisendel.

Yang Liu - "Notable Notes" - Volume III Violinist Yang Liu continues to perform and teach both locally and internationally, having recently returned , in February, from the International Festival in Campinas, Brazil where he worked intensively with 15 University students, gave Master Classes, and performed the Paganini Concerto No. 1 with the Festival Orchestra. Although Yang picked up a strain of Brazilian flu while on tour, he managed to flawlessly perform the Paganini Concerto to multiple standing ovation audiences who energized him to such a degree that he gave them a spellbinding Bach Chaconne encore. Yang and his pianist wife I-Hsuan Tsai continue to perform together, developing their reputation as a highly sought-after duo: On March 12 they returned once again to I-Hsuan's alumni teaching college, Carolina Coastal College, Jacksonville, N.C., where, after playing the Schubert Fantasy and Brahms Ballade for solo piano, and works by Prokofiev, Wieniawski and Kreisler for violin and piano, in an auditorium bulging with as many additional seats that the stage and all of the aisles could accommodate, the artists have been asked to return and concertize annually. March 19 was the 3rd in the Rare Violin Concert Series of Chicago recitals, lavishly hosted in the home of Mrs. Lidia and Dr. Armando Susmano, where Yang dazzled guests by performing on a Stradivarius violin generously loaned for the occasion and presented by Ling Li, Director of the Stradivari Society, and I-Hsuan was thrilled to play the fine Steinway piano belonging to the Susmanos.

Her hobby, her passion, and nearly her undoing
By Associated Press Published October 10, 2004 NEW YORK - Violinist Rachel Barton Pine is on a quest to spread classical music. She goes on rock stations and plays heavy metal songs on her Guarneri violin, then throws in a little Paganini. She has established a foundation to help disadvantaged youngsters buy instruments and travel to competitions. And her albums often highlight not-so-famous composers whose works are worth knowing. "Bringing music to people is a very powerful force in this world," Pine said. "Music is what gets us in touch with our humanity. It's not entertainment. It's not something just to go and listen to just for fun. . . . Music is a very spiritual experience. . . . It's that motivation which has kept me going - all along."
