All great fun, especially touring the jungle forests in southern Nepal by elephant. . . . We came back to Greece with a one-week stop in Albania to help pick up the pieces after the riots and burning at the Agricultural University last Marchthe whole library was totally destroyed." Tad also mentions that the organization she helped found, the International Women's Organization of Greece, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The philanthropic organization's aim is to allow women of all nationalities to meet and adjust to Greek society, using English as the language of communication. The Lansdales say they will be in California until May.

BENTLEY, REBECCA, nee GRANT (Vanbrugh, Music). Peripatetic Teacher. I graduated from York in 1980 and spent the following year at Bulmershe College of Education in Reading where I completed a PGCE. My first teaching post was at Milton Keynes as a peripatetic teacher of woodwind, specialising in oboe teaching. In 1986 I applied for a similar post in Bedfordshire and have worked with that authority ever since. After a period of uncertainty due to local government review, I have recently been appointed Head of Woodwind for New Bedfordshire. In 1986 I married Andrew Bentley, a freelance musician and violinist whom I met whilst playing in the Milton Keynes Chamber Orchestra.
    BLANCHARD, ANNE GALLAGHER (Wentworth, English)
Married now to Simon (Wentworth, History, 1980) for 24 years after meeting in our first week at York in the B block residences. We have four children: Joe 18, Sarah 15, Hannah and Thomas (twins) 12. We both work as full-time primary school teachers - Simon in Year 2, and me in Year 3 - exhausting, but very rewarding. We have lived in Darwen in Lancashire for almost 20 years. Before that we sold our house on Heslington Road to the University and used the money to travel to China, Australia and Europe taking photos and birdwatching. We sold a few of our pictures but not enough to make a living. Simon drove HGV lorries until 1994, when he did his PGCE and finally got a proper job much to his mother's delight.

    ZBZBXBZBBXBZBXBZ!!! (NOISE)
Rippin' introduction to the Toronto noise (non-) scene by Kevin Hainey in this week's eye, in honour of the strange proliferation of noise gigs in town this month. (See the tail of the feature.) I'd quibble with some of his taxonomy (I wouldn't tag some of them pseudOntario surrealists who've come and gone, or mostly refused to go away, as noise artists), but I'm glad he discusses how over-segregated from one another the free-jazz, improv, avant-academic and noise people tend to be here. Unsurprisingly, "out" musicians and organizational/promotional skills are not so mixy, but it's too bad for the audiences that never get to know. Noise right now seems to be a place the experimental rock scene and Other music can meet; it's there in the fan press, and seen occasionally at Wavelength and the Music Gallery and the late lamented New Works, but it remains the unfinished project. Not that nobody's trying but p-r-o-g-r-e-s-s i-s s-l-o-w. C'mon folxx get 2gether! Thanks to Kevin as well for the Zoilusian shoutout in there. Kids Are Swingin' From The Power Lines
concert review The Arcade Fire w/ Wolf Parade Final Fantasy Danforth Music Hall (Toronto, Ontario), April 27, 2005
It almost seems redundant to even continue my little ol' review of Wednesday night's Arcade Fire show when so many others have already done so[ chromewaves SHOT 10:51am Toronto Just Keep Bloggin' ... Torontoist ] but oh well, here goes. So where I last left off was with Final Fantasy and friends performing a non-ironic version of Mariah Carey's "Fantasy" , in the process inspiring some initial snickers in the audience but, in the end leaving us with a smile on our faces. Nice start to the evening.
Next up were Montreal's Wolf Parade . The four young gents played an admirable set up psych-pop tunes, propelled by the the bouncy keyboard arrangements, the energetic rhythm section and the feverish lead vocals that alternated between the keyboardist and guitarist. When Win from Arcade Fire jumped down to the front of the stage to take in the set as a spectactor, that inspired a flood of people to take residence in front of the stage. Nice to see the crowd get into the performance. Initial impressions of Wolf Parade are good but nothing earth-shattering. Maybe Danforth Music Hall is too big of a venue for them. They'll be returning to Toronto for a show at the much smaller
