According to this report It is also, I think, the last of the big and well-known unsolved problems in mathematics, and its nice to see the search ending in success. Some of the other big problems have been closed, rather than solved. The classic problems of the Greeks such as squaring the circle were shown to be insoluble in the 19th century, and the Hilbert program of formalisation was shown by Godel to be infeasible. And the four-colour problem (not a really important problem, but a big one because it was easily described, interesting and very tough) was dealt with by a brute-force computer enumeration. Posted Thu Jun 10th, 2004 at 17:43:08 PDT This seems to be the time of year for attempted solutions to very hard problems. Unfortunately, Arenstorf has withdrawn his paper which claimed to prove the Twin Prime conjecture , but the BBC is reporting that Louis De Branges has claimed to have proved the Riemann hypothesis. Post a Comment The professional mathematicans on sci.math are slightly sceptical about this: The same [proof]? or a new one? De Branges has often claimed to have proved the Riemann hypothesis before. However, he did play an important role in the proof of the Bieberbach conjecture, so there is at least the possibility that this is a correct proof. I am not completely convinced that it is useful for the mainstream (non-mathematical) media to report such things so credulously. It is quite likely that De Branges is wrong, and therefore it might have been better to hold the story until other mathematicians had actually read his new preprints.

Part of the glamour, mystery, and excitement of mathematics involves finding solutions to famous problems. The Four-Color Problem and Fermat's Last Theorem have been solved in the past 30 years to great public acclaim. Both of these long-standing problems are easy to state even though their solutions baffled the best minds in mathematics for centuries. There is general agreement in the mathematical community that the most important unsolved problem of mathematics now is the Riemann Hypothesis. This hypothesis involves concepts of advanced mathematics but connects to elementary notions such as prime numbers. A proper understanding of the Riemann Hypothesis requires some advanced mathematics, but you will see how The Mathematical Explorer allows us to understand some of the functions related to the Riemann function and to examine some of the evidence for the truth of the Riemann Hypothesis.

Reasons to Doubt the Riemann Hypothesis
I found this while looking up all citations of Odlyzko and Riele's paper disproving Mertens' Conjecture . Although I'm 99% convinced that the Riemann Hypothesis is true, if anyone is in a position to know why it might be false, it's Aleksandar Ivic , who's literally written the book (or at least, one of the books) on the Riemann zeta function.

Riemann conjectured that the non trivial zeros of z (s) are located on the critical line (s)=1/2. This conjecture, known as the Riemann hypothesis , has never been proved or disproved, and is probably the most important unsolved problem in mathematics. The Riemann hypothesis makes the zeta function so famous, and numerical computation have been made to check it for various sets of zeros. We expose here the most classical results about the zeta-function, together with some computational aspects. Our presentation is divided into several parts that are listed here :

Has the Riemann Hypothesis been Proven?
From this press report , it would appear that Louis de Branges, of Bieberbach Conjecture fame, is claiming a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis
This, if true, would be the single greatest mathematical result of the decade, and maybe even of the last 100 years, depending on one's viewpoint; as such, I shall refuse to accept that the Riemann Hypothesis has fallen until de Branges' proof goes through the normal process of peer review several times.
The strangest thing about this purported proof is the rambling style of the " apology ", which touches on, amongst many other things, de Branges' early life, his mathematical education and even his ancestral backround, including how he intends to use the million-dollar Clay prize to rehabilitate his ancestral seat; the real meat and potatoes are saved for a 124-page paper innocuously titled Riemann Zeta Functions . Now, it may be that the guy's always been an oddball, but there's just something about the way he's chosen to announce his results (why a press release, instead of via ArXiv ?) that tells me that the old boy's gone completely nuts, a known occupational hazard of the mathematician's profession.

Cracked Riemann hypothesis would spell massive crypto disaster
Whoa, someone may have cracked the so-called Riemann hypothesis, which would spell financial disaster for electronic commerce. Suddenly all cryptic codes could be breakable. No internet transaction would be safe. The Riemann hypothesis would explain the apparently random pattern of prime numbers - numbers such as 3, 17 and 31, for instance, are all prime numbers: they are divisible only by themselves and one. Prime numbers are the atoms of arithmetic. They are also the key to internet cryptography: in effect they keep banks safe and credit cards secure.

Louis de Branges de Bourcia (Purdue) has announced a proof of the Riemann hypothesis, one of the Clay Foundation's Millennium Million-Dollar Prize Problems, following a research program that he announced in 1986. However, Conrey and Li "indicate the difficulty of approaching the Riemann hypothesis by using de Branges' positivity conditions," a result that suggests that de Branges's approach can't work. (Of course, unless there's an easy proof that everybody missed, any approach will be difficult.) Nevertheless, in 1985 de Branges proved the Bieberbach conjecture, a famous unsolved problem open since 1916, about coefficients of power series of conformai maps of the unit disk.
