142. Revisiting The Abilene Paradox: Is Management Of Agreement Still An Issue

Leading Ideas: Revisiting the Abilene Paradox:
Is Management of Agreement Still an Issue?
by Kathryn J. Deiss, ARL Office of Leadership and Management Services Program Manager
In 1974, Professor Jerry Harvey of George Washington University developed a parable from a real-life experience to describe the issues surrounding how individuals reach agreement, or, more specifically, believe they have reached agreement. Twenty-five years later the lessons and insights his parable generates are still valid and provocative for organizations and the individuals who work together in those organizations. The Parable of the Abilene Paradox
none How Do We Know When We Are Headed for Abilene?
Harvey points to six characteristics emblematic of a group failing to manage agreement effectively:
  • Members individually, but privately, agree about their current situation. The group in Coleman knew individually that they were satisfied with just sitting on the porch. Members agree, again in private, about what it would take to deal with the situation. In this case, the members privately agreed that staying on the porch was a good way to spend a hot and dusty day. Based on inaccurate perceptions and assumptions, members make a collective decision that leads to action. It is in the action that it becomes apparent that the decision is contrary to individual desires. They thereby arrive at a destination they did not want to go to in the first place. Our protagonists in the parable do not actually discover their unanimous disagreement with the action they took until someone says, "Well, that was a nice trip." Another person is then moved by frustration and exhaustion to blurt out the truth, "It was not a good idea or a nice trip!"

    Curry's Paradox
Russell's paradox , Curry's paradox challenges familiar naive theories, including naive truth theory (unrestricted T-schema) and naive set theory (unrestricted axiom of abstraction), respectively. If one accepts naive truth theory (or naive set theory), then Curry's paradox becomes a direct challenge to one's theory of logical implication or entailment. Unlike the liar and Russell paradoxes Curry's paradox is negation-free; it may be generated irrespective of one's theory of negation. An intuitive version of the paradox runs as follows.

document.write(""); Basic Introduction to Time Travel Time and space have fascinated man since the dawn of civilization. People have spent aeons thinking about these concepts and the ideas behind them. The Greeks, the Romans, the English, all have stared at the heavens and wondered. And not without reason! As the boundaries of physics are pushed back and back it is becoming clear that whoever understands the laws of physics best will be able to travel through time and space, easily gaining a dominant position in the known Universe. Indeed that race which can move from universe to universe will get to control all universes! We must therefore double our efforts to ensure that it is we and not some other race who gains understanding first! Or we will end up playing second fiddle for rest of time! Pythagoras into Einstein in two easy steps So where do we start? Well let us start with one of the greatest triumphs of the human mind, the great theorem of Pythagoras, a true pillar of all mathematics and physics. The theorem, which is applicable to right angled triangles in flat Cartesian (Newtonian) space takes the form of: c^2 = a^2 + b^2 where a, b and c are the lengths of the sides of the triangle.

    Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Paradox

A paradox first enunciated by Einstein et al. (1935), who proposed a thought experiment that appeared to demonstrate quantum mechanics to be an incomplete theory. The usual view of quantum mechanics says that a wave function determines the probabilities of an actual experimental result and that it is the most complete possible specification of the quantum state. Einstein et al. believed the predictions of quantum mechanics to be correct, but only as the result of statistical distributions of other unknown but real properties of the particles. Bohm (1951) presented a paper in which he described a modified form of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen thought experiment which he believed to be conceptually equivalent to that suggested by Einstein et al. (1935), but which was easier to treat mathematically. Bohm suggested using two atoms with a known total spin of zero, separated in a way that the spin of each atom points in a direction exactly opposite to that of the other. In this situation, the angular momentum of one particle can be measured indirectly by measuring the corresponding vector of the other particle. Bell (1964) subsequently formulated Bell's inequalities , which seemed to be a physically reasonable condition of locality which imposed restrictions on the maximum correlations of the measurements of a pair of spin 1/2 particles formed somehow in the singlet state and moving freely in opposite directions. This inequality can be tested in a laboratory experiment because the statistical predictions of quantum mechanics are incompatible with any local

© Education Queensland, 1997 Simpson's Paradox The Ashes Series The two Waugh brothers, Steve and Mark, decided to have a little wager on who would have the better overall batting average over the two upcoming Ashes Test series, the first in England and the next here in Australia. How is this possible, that Steve could have a better average in each of the two Tests but a lower average overall? Our Benevolent Government Consider this scenario, which is a simplified version of our federal tax system. A government taxes people at two rates. All income below $25 000 is taxed at the low rate of 20% and income above $25 000 is taxed at the high rate of 40%. Being a kind and generous government they decide to give the people a tax cut. The low rate is cut to 15% and the high rate is cut to 35%. Imagine the surprise of the government when the overall tax rate turned out to be higher than before! Of course once the government realised their error they immediately returned this extra income back to the people. Simpson's Paradox Explained Moore, D.and McCabe, G.

The Banach-Tarski Paradox is well-known among mathematicians, particularly among set theorists. The paradox states that it is possible to take a solid sphere (a "ball"), cut it up into a finite number of pieces, rearrange them using only rotations and translations, and re-assemble them into two identical copies of the original sphere. In other words, you've doubled the volume of the original sphere. "Impossible!" I hear you say. "That violates physical laws!" Well, that is what many mathematicians said when they first heard this paradox. But I'd like to point out in this article why this may not be as impossible as one might think at first. It revolves around the decades-old debate of whether the Axiom of Choice should be admitted or rejected. More on this in the epilogue. Preliminaries First of all, let's nail down what exactly we're talking about so that we're all on the same page. First and foremost, we're talking about a

    1. Are we alone in the universe?
The drive to place humanity at the center of the universe has led to a stream of assumptions that, as facts have been collected, are shown to be ill founded. The Ptolemaic Earth centered view was replaced by Copernican Sun centered view which in its time was also replaced. The assumption that we are alone in the universe is also under threat of replacement. One of the more interesting aspects of our apparent aloneness was pointed out by Enrico Fermi and is know as Fermi's Paradox Fermi's Paradox may be succinctly stated as: Extraterrestrials should have colonized Earth long ago, but they have not. So where are they? Whether you agree with the point that Earth was colonized or not the fact remains that no concrete evidence has ever been found indicating a visitation of Earth by extraterrestrials. This is in itself is a very significant point whose ramifications I intend to explore here.
