Test Prep Center - MCAT About the MCAT If you plan on applying to a medical school in the United States, you need to the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The MCAT is different from every other test you have ever encountered in your academic career. Unlike the knowledge-based exams from high school and college, where the emphasis was on memorizing information, the MCAT primarily emphasizes the thought process. It is a thinking test above all else. Snapshot: MCAT The MCAT consists of four and three-quarter hours of multiple choice testing, plus one hour devoted to a writing sample. With all of the administrative details and three breaks, your test day experience can last for more than six hours. The test is divided into four timed sections always appearing in the same order: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. Every section is designed to measure the higher-order thinking skills necessary for success in medical school, including analytical reasoning, abstract thinking, and problem solving.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in cooperation with its member U.S. medical schools. The MCAT assesses mastery of basic concepts in biology, chemistry (general and organic), and physics; facility with scientific problem solving and critical thinking; and writing skills. The skills and concepts tested by the MCAT are those identified by physicians and medical educators as prerequisite for the practice of medicine. Medical school faculty hope that testing for these skills on the MCAT will encourage undergraduates with broad educational backgrounds to consider careers in the health professions and will stimulate premedical students to investigate a wide variety of course offerings outside the natural sciences. The MCAT is given in April and August of each year at established test centers. In any one year, a candidate may test only once in April and once in August. There is no provision for makeup tests. On the Test Date: Candidates must report to the test center no later than 8:00 AM, local time. The overall length of the test day is approximately nine and one-half hours. The exam ends at approximately 5:30 PM.

How to Study for the MCAT
It's well known that an armed gunman once broke in on a Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) session and stole copies of the exam, probably to pirate them. This story only adds to the hype surrounding the MCAT, but here are a few hints that might help you deal with the Mother of All Entrance Exams. What is the MCAT? When should I take it? Steps: Keep in mind that the MCAT is primarily a critical thinking test. Think about and understand basic scientific principles and their applications instead of concentrating only on facts and information. Check specific medical school admission policies. While nearly all126 U.S. medical schools require MCAT scores for admission, some schools like Johns Hopkins and combined undergraduate/medical degree programs do not require the exam. Decide whether you will take the MCAT that is offered in mid-April or the one offered in mid-August.

If you score below 8 on any of these sections it is strongly recommended that you retake the exam in August before the start of your senior year. Medical Schools prefer to see scores of 9 or higher. The exam consists of 4 sections: 1. Verbal Reasoning: a measure of the ability to understand, evaluate and apply information and arguments presented in prose texts. 2. Physical Sciences: a measure of the ability to understand basic concepts and to solve problems in the areas of physics and physically related chemistry. 3. Information provided by www.kaptest.com Most people preparing for the MCAT fall prey to the myth that the MCAT is a straightforward science test. Well, here's the little secret no one seems to want you to know: The MCAT is not just a science test; it's also a thinking test. This means that the test is designed to let you demonstrate your thought process, not only your thought content. Every section on the MCAT tests essentially the same higher-order thinking skills: analytical reasoning, abstract thinking, and problem-solvingskills that are essential for success in medical school. MCAT Scores and School Success
A recent study commissioned by the MCAT's authors, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), confirmed a direct correlation between MCAT scores and success in medical school. Therefore, medical schools don't need to rely on the MCAT to see what you already know Schools are most interested in your intellectual potential. They choose applicants carefully because expansive knowledge is not enough to succeed in medical school or in the profession. There's something more. And it's this "something more" that the MCAT is trying to measure.

    MCAT Writing Sample
The writing sample consists of two essays each one completed in a timed 30 minute session. Each essay is a response to a given statement, for example, "True leadership leads by example rather than by command". Your response will be graded by how well you respond to three tasks:
    • Task One: Thesis Provide your interpretation or explanation of the statement.
    • Task Two: Antithesis Offer a concrete example that illustrates a point directly opposite to the one expressed or implied by the statement.
    • Task Three: Conflict Resolution Explain how the conflict between the viewpoint expressed in the statement and the viewpoint described in the second task might be resolved.
AAMC has published a list of possible test statements for use in 2000. Two graders will score your essay independently on a 1 to 6 point scale (see below). If these scores differ by more than 1 point, a third (senior) grader determines the score. Score Explanation Fulfills all three tasks; major ideas are substantially developed; shows clarity, depth and complexity of thought; uses language in a sophisticated manner. Fulfills all three tasks; major ideas are well developed; shows clarity of thought, with some depth or complexity; demonstrates strong control of vocabulary and sentence structure.
