SCIENCES The physical sciences test covers physics and general chemistry. The biological sciences test covers biology and organic chemistry, with concentration on biology.
The science portions of the MCAT consist mainly of a series of passages, each with several questions or problems. Often the passages involve unfamiliar situations and, rather than numbers, explanations, relationships among various quantities, and extrapolations to new situations. There is no ordering from easy to difficult. When pre-med students find out about the exam, they are often fearful.
How do you prepare for such a thing?

Prepared by Tina Sicard (EC '98) The MCAT is one of the most important tests you will take as a premed student, therefore it is a wise idea to be well prepared. Some people do take the exam cold, and as a consequence do not do well. This exam requires extensive preparation for good performances. The MCAT is the only way that medical schools have to objectively compare you and your college to applicants from other institutions. Consequently, most medical schools have minimum cut-off scores for acceptance; therefore, it is in your best interest to present them with the best scores you can achieve. Although the MCAT is not the only form of evaluation, it may be just the edge you need to be competitive. "Beginning in 1990, a new version of the MCAT has been adopted by the American Association of Medical Colleges. The new version is based on the philosophy that medical students should have the ability to think and analyze, rather than simply memorize." (Plantz 77) The new exam consists of four parts: Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Verbal Reasoning and a Writing Sample (essays). The new format is designed to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge of basic concepts in physics, biology and chemistry. It also tests comprehension, critical and analytical thinking, logical reasoning, communication and writing skills, problem-solving and qualitative skills.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE To Medical School Applicants From the desk of Dr. Brett L. Ferdinand Fall 2002 Congratulations on your interest in applying to medical school. I remember when I was faced with the same career choice. Attending medical school was one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. As the senior surgical resident at one of Canada's leading programs for General and Trauma Surgery. I am fulfilling one of my life long dreams and career goals. Medicine is my first passion in life. My second passion in life is teaching. In 1987 I created the first Canadian Medical School Preparatory Course. I first offered the program in the summer of that year. My enthusiasm to help pre-med students became so great that in 1993 I wrote the first edition of my "Gold Standard For Medical School Admissions" which, in addition to being a comprehensive MCAT guide, covers all aspects of getting into medical school. I revised the "Gold Standard" in 1995 by adding three full length MCAT exams. Thousands of students across Canada and the United States have used the "Gold Standard". Teaching pre-med students in my Medical School Preparatory Course (MSPC™) and reaching thousands more through the "Gold Standard For Medical School Admissions" has sustained my second passion in life.

There are three things that are certain in life: death, taxes and change. You can't avoid change, it's mandatory, progress however is optional . - Bill R. Good, Jr. The MCAT Exam The MCAT is the standard that medical schools use to rate one student against another. It is the most important test you will take in your medical career, and is second only to your grade point average in determining whether you will be a doctor or not. It is different from other standardized tests you may have taken, and will require a focused and sustained effort to prepare properly. Very few students pass this test without studying. Make it a priority to spend 20 to 40 hours a week for a solid 3 months to be competitive. You should extend your studying to at least 6 months if it has been a few years since you completed some of your medical school prerequisites. In addition, take several practice tests to build up your endurance and familiarize yourself with the conditions on test day. Your ability to work hard during these few months may be deciding factor on whether or not you'll be a physician. So make the most of this time. If you feel it will help, you can retake basic science courses or enroll in one the MCAT preparation courses by

Q. What is the MCAT? A. The MCAT , a standardized test, is required or strongly recommended for admission to almost every medical school, allopathic, osteopathic, and podiatric, in the United States. It is usually one of the main screening devices used by admissions committees; however, the importance attached to the scores varies, depending upon the medical school and on the candidate's other credentials. Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) gives some insight into policies at each allopathic school. Q. What science coursework is prerequisite for the MCAT? A.

http://www.columbiareview.com/htdocs_v6/mcat.html

The MCAT is designed to assess your mastery of basic skills that are felt to be prerequisite for the successful completion of medical school. The exam changed format starting in April 1991. The MCAT is now a 5.75 hour exam divided into four general sections: Section # of Questions Time (min.) Physical Sciences Verbal Reasoning Writing Sample Biological Sciences The first section of the MCAT is the Physical Sciences section. This section is composed of 77 multiple choice questions that test reasoning skills in physics and general chemistry. Sixty-two of the questions are based on problem sets, each about 250 words in length, that describe a situation or science problem. The section contains about 10 of these problem sets, where each set contains 5-10 questions. An additional 15 questions will be given that are independent of any problem set or any other question. Questions are designed to test your science knowledge and problem solving ability in physics and general chemistry. You are expected to be familiar with graphical and tabular analysis. The passages accompanying each problem set will fall into one of four general types: informational presentation, problem solving, research study, or persuasive argument. Time allotted for answering all 77 questions will be 100 minutes. A ten minute break will then be given. The Verbal Reasoning section is designed to assess your ability to understand and evaluate information in arguments contained in prose texts. The section consists of 9 passages, each 500-600 words in length, taken from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Each passage will be followed by 6-10 questions. Questions are designed to measure performance in four areas: comprehension, evaluation, application, and incorporation of new information. Eighty-five minutes will be allotted for completion of this section. A 60 minute lunch break follows this section.

  • Can I decide not to release my MCAT scores and then later decide to release them after I have seen my score?
    1) What is the MCAT? Index The Medical College Admissions Test, or MCAT, is the standardized admissions test required by nearly all U.S. medical schools (some combined BS/MD programs that accept students directly from high school do not require the MCAT). The test consists of four sections: Verbal Reasoning (scored 1-15), Physical Sciences (scored 1-15), Biological Sciences (scored 1-15), and an essay section (scored J-T, with T being the highest). The test takes one long Saturday to complete and is offered twice a year, usually in mid April and in late August. Official information about the MCAT, including registration information, may be obtained online from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). 2) How important is the MCAT in the admission process? Index The MCAT is very important. A high MCAT score by itself will not get you into medical school, but a low MCAT score may keep you out. Unfortunately, an otherwise qualified applicant may not even be granted an interview if his or her MCAT scores are not high enough. Once an interview is granted, each applicant is evaluated individually in determining acceptance or rejection. In most cases the MCAT still is just as important as other parts of the application in making the final decision.

Kaplan MCAT Comprehensive Review with CD-ROM 2004 Edition

MYTH: You need a knowledge of upper-division sciences in order to do well on the MCAT.
FACT: According to the AAMC, you only need an introductory level of knowledge of physics, general chemistry, biology, and organic chemistry for the MCAT. Some passages may describe upper-division topics, but correctly answering the questions will not require upper-division knowledge.
MYTH: You don't need to prepare thoroughly for the MCAT if you're doing well in your pre-med courses.
FACT: Nearly 50% of all MCAT test takers sit for the MCAT a second time due to inadequate preparation the first time, and many of those people are doing just fine in their science courses. Believe it or not, most students who do well on the MCAT spend between 200 to 300 hours preparing for the exam. Control the things you can control, namely your preparation for this exam. Trust us, you don't want to have to take it a second time.
