The LSAT is Learnable
The first thing to understand about the LSAT is that you can prepare for it. Many people think that since it is an aptitude test, it is largely a matter of innate ability. Granted, some innate ability is necessary to get a perfect score on the LSAT, but many with sufficient ability will get lower scores because they do not prepare effectively. edit
Master the LSAT
I feel I should credit a book by Jeff Kolby and Scott Thornburg before I continue. This particular study guide, entitled Master the LSAT, was the one out of the many I read that actually helped. The secret is their classification of the analytical games into different categories. edit
Attack the Analytical Section First
Note: the analytical section has become significantly easier since the writing of the instructions below. It is no longer nearly as highly timed, i.e., there tend to be fewer problems than there were five years ago. Basically, you should understand that if you attack the analytical section in your preparation, then the logical reasoning section should follow easily. The reading comprehension section will come to you easily as well, so long as you are a fast reader. If you are a slow reader (as I was a few years ago), then you will need to do some deliberate practice in your reading in order to improve.

Revised: April 5 , 2001 Facts About the LSAT The LSAT is a five-section, multiple-choice, standard-scored "aptitude" test, followed by a 30-minute writing sample. Taking the test requires 3 hours and 25 minutes, not including rest breaks and the time needed for the distribution and collection of test materials, as well as other test center procedures. The five multiple-choice sections, containing a total of about 120-130 questions, are separately timed at 35 minutes apiece, with a brief (usually 10-15 minutes) break in between the third and fourth sections. There are three different question-types: Reading Comprehension Typically, a section of this type will include about 26-28 questions, arranged into four sets, each containing a passage followed by 6-8 questions. Analytical Reasoning Also called Logic Games of the "matrix" type, they typically come in sections containing approximately 24 questions, arranged in four sets of analytical problems or "setups" with 5-7 questions apiece.

Evangeline M. Mitchell, JD, author of the African American Pre-Law School Advice Guide All law schools that are approved by the American Bar Association require applicants to take a standardized test known as the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Designed by Law Services, the LSAT measures skills that are considered essential for success in law school. Successful law students must be able to read and comprehend complete texts with accuracy and insight and be able to organize and manage information while drawing reasonable inferences from it. Of equal importance, successful law students must also be able to reason critically, problem-solve and analyze and evaluate the reasoning and argument of others. Five different sections of the LSAT test these abilities. They are:

The LSAT The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a standardized test developed by the Law School Admissions Services. It is designed to indicate a candidate's potential to succeed in the first year of law school. LSAT is offered four times each academic year: in June, October, December, and February. The June test is given on a Monday afternoon; the others are administered on a Saturday morning. For observers of Saturday Sabbath, alternative test dates are available. Those with handicaps or who need special equipment or consideration may make special arrangements in advance. The test consists of four scored, 35-minute sections, involving three question types: logical reasoning, analytical reasoning and reading comprehension. In addition, there is an unscored 35-minute section composed of experimental questions, and a 30-minute writing sample ends the test. Test takers do not know which section is experimental. The scoring scale ranges from 120 to 180 points.
When To Take the LSAT
For students who plan to apply to law school in their senior year (for admission to the fall class after graduation), you should plan to take the LSAT in June following your junior year. This date has several advantages. Since the semester is finished, there is no tension between trying to study for classes at the same time as preparing for the LSAT. You have approximately a month between the end of classes and the LSAT administration to prepare. Your score is in your hands by the end of July so you can begin the process of selecting law schools. You also have the opportunity to take the test again should you decide to cancel your score or feel you need to retake the test.

All American Bar Association approved law schools require you to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), a 3 ½ hour standardized test. What are the components of the LSAT? The current LSAT consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple choice questions, plus a writing sample. Reading comprehension: measures your ability to read with understanding and insight.
Analytical reasoning: measures your ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw conclusions about the structure.
Logical reasoning (2 sections): evaluates your ability to understand, analyze, criticize and complete a variety of arguments.
Variable section: an experimental section that takes the form of one of the 3 aforementioned test sections that is used to help formulated new LSAT questions. This section will not count toward your LSAT score. You will not be told which section is the variable one.

Preparing For the LSAT Pre-Law students often report that LSAT preparation is one of the most stressful experiences in their academic lives. It is important to realize that adequate preparation is keykey to alleviating the stress and key to achieving your target LSAT score. Successful LSAT preparation strategies begin with accurate information about the LSAT itself. Here is how the Law School Admission Council describes the LSAT: "The LSAT is a half-day standardized test required for admission to all . . . LSAC-member schools. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test-taker's score. These sections include one reading comprehension section, one analytical reasoning section, and two logical reasoning sections. The unscored section typically is used to pretest new test items and to preequate new test forms. A 30-minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test."
