  • PATRIOT Act Renewal Bill Would Expand FBI Powers . Reuters reports that Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) plans to introduce legislation that would not only reauthorize sunsetting provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, but also expand the government's investigative powers to permit the FBI to demand health, library, and tax records in intelligence investigations without judicial approval. Today the committee had planned to hold a closed session to vote on whether to send the legislation to the Senate floor. The session was cancelled, but is expected to be held next week. For more information, see EPIC's USA PATRIOT Act Sunset page. (May 19, 2005) House, Senate Hold USA PATRIOT Act Oversight Hearings. Beginning this week, Congress will hold numerous hearings to review controversial sections of the USA PATRIOT Act that gave the government greater investigative powers. Many of these provisions are slated to expire at the end of the year unless the administration makes the case for renewal. Last month, EPIC submitted a FOIA request (pdf) to the FBI asking how the agency has used expanded investigative powers under sunsetting provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act. EPIC has also posted a

Robert F. Stoops writes ( The Anchor Bible Dictionary , v. 5, p. 267) One of the earliest of the apocryphal acts of the apostles, the Acts of Peter reports a miracle contest between Simon Magus and the apostle Peter in Rome. It concludes with Peter's martyrdom. The Acts of Peter was originally composed in Greek during the second half of the 2d century, probably in Asia Minor. The majority of the text has survived only in the Latin translation of the Vercelli manuscript. The concluding chapters are preserved separately as the Martyrdom of Peter in three Greek manuscripts and in Coptic (fragmentary), Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Armenian, and Slavonic versions.

GENERAL
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."
  • Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.

Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,17327,00.html 04:35 PM Jan. 13, 1999 PT Eric Eldred loves rare books, but not enough to go to jail for sharing them online. Eldred founded Eldritch Press in 1995, hoping he could share rare and out-of-print books with a Web audience that otherwise might not be able to see such lost works. But thanks to the , signed into law 27 October, Eldred's hobby publishing rare books online could result in a jail sentence of up to six years. "This is not an instance of wanting to take money out of authors' pockets," Eldred said. "The only people who will benefit from this act are distant heirs of the author and publishing companies." Eldred's policy has been to publish classic works immediately after they entered the public domain. He had planned to include 1920s works like A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh and Hemingway's Three Stories and Ten Poems The law could also have a chilling effect on other online book sites. John Mark Ockerbloom, editor of the

The USA PATRIOT Act and beyond
It is still unclear how or when the FBI's expanded wiretapping and warrantless search powers will affect journalists, but the Justice Department has shown that it intends to use its powers aggressively, even making clear that a law barring newsroom searches is trumped by the USA PATRIOT Act when it comes to terrorism investigations. The USA PATRIOT Act's impact on newsgathering is still largely theoretical nearly four years after Congress rushed to enact the law. No newsrooms are known to have been searched and apparently no documents have been taken from reporters under the law although those subject to such a search and seizure would be prohibited from talking about it. Nevertheless, journalists should be concerned about certain provisions of the law, which grant broad new powers to government agents to investigate terrorism and make previous statutory protections for newsrooms almost irrelevant when it comes to terrorism investigations. Congress enacted the law with little debate just six weeks after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. President Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act into law on Oct. 26, 2001.

Telecommunications Act of 1996 The Telecommunications Act of 1996 is the first major overhaul of telecommunications law in almost 62 years. The goal of this new law is to let anyone enter any communications business to let any communications business compete in any market against any other. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 has the potential to change the way we work, live and learn. It will affect telephone service local and long distance, cable programming and other video services, broadcast services and services provided to schools. The Federal Communications Commission has a tremendous role to play in creating fair rules for this new era of competition. At this Internet site, we will provide information about the FCC's role in implementing this new law, how you can get involved and how these changes might impact you. This page will include information listing the proceedings the FCC will complete to open up local phone markets, increase competition in long distance and other steps. You will find copies of news releases summarizing action, announcements of meetings where these items will be discussed, and charts describing the work ahead of us and where (within the FCC) and when it will be completed. Please note: some of the links on this page lead to resources outside the FCC. The presence of these links should not be taken as an endorsement by the FCC of these sites or their content.
